A tribute to the Oakland Lady Patriots

Now that things have settled down and the season is over, I want to take time to congratulate the girls and their coaching staff for the wonderful season they had. I know they girls were aiming for a state championship and coming up short no doubt hurts very much, but not many teams get a chance to do what these girls did.

 

A list of the accomplishments:1.) A unbeaten regular season District 7-AAA Championship( 1st time in school history-will become a theme here in a second )

2.) Overton Christmas Tourney Champions, had a tough field with Antioch(whom Oakland beat in the finals) and Smyrna( Another Rutherford Co team with a great season thumb )

3.) Region 4-AAA Championship(1st in school history) and the right to host a sectional game( also a 1st in school history)

4. Won their sectional game against Cumberland Co, in which the Lady Pats showed tremendous heart when they were trailing with less than 2 minutes to go.

5. A 1st round, state tourney win over Wilson Central, was especially sweet because almost everybody besides those who support the Lady Pats said it couldnt be done. Also made Oakland 3 for 3 in the 1st round of the state tourney

6. State Final 4 Appearance( 3rd in school history, all in the last 5 seasons)

7. 32 wins, tied for the most in school history, boys and girls.

 

Its easy to focus on the 1 goal that you girls didnt accomplish, but that would be cheating yourself out of all you accomplish. Lady Patriots, you accomplished more than any other Lady Patriot team in school history and your spot as the best Lady Patriot team EVER has been earned, you girls are the best this school has ever had. Im proud of every girl thats on the team this year as you girls were a representation of what all Oakland students should be: exhibiting class in everything you do.

 

So Lady Pats, instead of focusing on the negative, focus on what you did accomplish, while the hurt may still be there, this is a season you girls will cheerish for the rest of your life.

 

I could easily focus on just a few that were key to Oakland's success, but that wouldnt do any justice to the other girls who gave just as much effort throughout the whole season. Teams like this dont come along often at Oakland, but with Grandstaff at the helm, heres hoping it doesnt end with this team. GO LADY PATS!
