  1. It easy to be negative with all the TSSAA changes, but here are a couple of facts (numbers to ponder)- -this weekend the total number of qualifying wrestlers to the State- 746 (620 public, 448 AAA vs 172 A-AA & 126 private) -in 1993 the total was 384 period -with D-2 regions now, privates lost 98 wrestlers from last year (7 spots/wt), while publics picked up 172 (new A-AA) -no respect of returning place winners in D-2 was given (Elisha Oliver seeded 2nd-2x state champ and Fargo champ, arguably the state's best wrestler)
  2. Things are going in the wrong direction; think about it, we're going to have 3 state champs this year. But it will add more points for criteria for next year's invitational tournaments. Small school state champs should benefit greatly here, thus skewing many seeds.
  3. 138-FYI, the 12th seed is 22-5; not a losing record in the entire weight class!
  4. Sounds like you heard an experienced referee, and that tournament had some of the best in the country, not just local,
  5. Tough tourney and very good distribution in pools.
  6. Mark Marchetti and Cole Moseley are both competing at 149 in prestigious Cliff Keen tourney going on now in Vegas.
  7. This is the first I heard of his passing; I am shocked. I didn't know he had cancer; I'd seen him recently downtown on a street corner, we said our hellos and went on. Yes he was smiling; as many of you know he went through a tough spell, got through it, and since then he's been helping others in need, in his happy upbeat manner. I will miss you James, RIP.
  8. You don't assault someone in front of a full gym. This accusation wreaks with embellishment, and the TV interviewer wants to be the next Jerry Springer- horrible inciting questions to a mother who is clueless. I am not from the area, I'm just making an observation and using common sense. Having a prior does not help his situation; too bad because this is completely blown out proportion. The sad thing, today in education the parents run the school; administrators are so afraid of litigation, that teachers don't have their backing any more, thus making them expendable. This is a farce.
  9. Marable was a Nat'l Cadet Greco champ a few years ago.
  10. If you look at it another way with region 4 being so strong, all their place winners will be seperated until possible semi match-ups, so in a sense they are seeded; then just follow past seeding criteria. Could there be more region champions being knocked early by Reg 4 guys?-absolutely.
  11. each room cost $195.96 for 4 nights(that's total, less than $50/night); it's a Motel 6
  12. I am leaving for NCAAs early Wed morn, but I reserved 4 rooms (10 minutes from venue), 2 of which I won't need (a friend taking one). I am releasing them Tues at 8:00 pm. If anyone is interested in getting one or both, reply to this announcement by leaving your name and phone number before then. For now I am driving up alone, going thru Nashville; if anyone needs a ride let me know. Gordon Connell
  13. Phillip Simpson-NCAA runner-up, 3x AA Jordan Leen-NCAA champion, 3x AA
  14. Interesting that Zeke Jones's 1991 World title is omitted from his bio. He beat the great Bulgarian, Valentin Jordanov in the finals, in Bulgaria with John Dupont sitting in the Bulgarian's corner. Jordanov received the bulk of Dupont's millions when he died; Valentine stayed at Foxcatcher, Dupont's wrestling estate, for several years until Dave Schultz's murder.
  15. Match is postponed until Monday due to weather forecast.
  16. I love the concept to restore some of the old competition missing with today's watered down (and getting more watered) format. http://www.heraldextra.com/sports/high-school/wrestling/preece-uhsaa-sanctions-super-state-tournament-for-wrestling/article_e1dbd60e-5515-11e2-a31b-001a4bcf887a.html
  17. This is what is wrong about weight decent; it keeps kids from wrestling and hurts the team. Anyone who has wrestled knows the one hour weigh-in penalizes any extreme weight loss practices.

  19. This is sad news; look at the changes the state has made over the last several years- 70's-early 80s-district/region/state with only a 16 man bracket (4 places) (tourney in HS gyms) mid-80's/early 90's-one state champion with 32 man bracket (6 places) held at UTC; IMO the best format late 90's/to present- public/private divisions; meaning 2 state champs & 6 places for each div. *2010-moved the state to a rodeo venue with mats literally placed on the waving contours of a dirt floor (embarrassing when compared with other state venues) next year- 12 man small school bracket; 32 man large school bracket; 8 man D-2 bracket (still in a stable) VERY SAD lifeline
  20. My son Adam is scheduled to go to a 'Young Life' retreat,(Southwind in Fla) Sunday morn from Chattanooga. He is helping me with the tournament, but I'm going to be too tied up to leave in time to get back for his bus departure time. Just wondering if anyone was going thru/to Chattanooga immediately after the finals; he'll help pay for gas. If so, please e-mail me - gconnell@mccallie.org
  21. We are looking for anyone interested in a dual, tri-meet, or quad on Jan 14, preferably in the Chattanooga area. We are in Alabama the next day, so just the Friday only. If interested, email me-gconnell@mccallie.org

  23. I was told yesterday that our area will be interpreting a cross wrist tilt like a cradle-only one set of points given. They are saying the top wrestler must release the x-wrist control and only then would he be allowed to go back to it. Robles of Arizona State scored 9 points in his 1/4 match in the NCAA's with Precin, and he never let go of it. He releases the off hand control and then goes to another tilt. IMO this is like saying you only get one set of backpoints with a leg in on x-body ride; you must come out of legs completely before putting them back in- something is wrong here. How could this x-wrist interpretation fly; it's not in the rule book or in any situation in the case book?
