  2. People- drug testing is going on in some georgia school systems as we type. When you drug test you must have a plan in mind to help the student/athlete with the problem, not just kick them off the team. From what i understand about there testing, it is for extra-curricular activities.......that is band, choir, sports and etc. 1. If a student test positive they are suspended for a certain amount of time then retested. If clean, the student is allowed back for competition and will have a random drug test anytime during that year. 2. If student is tested positive a 2nd time then a longer suspension, drug rehab and random testing. and so on and so on. You can get the idea. The most important thing is the student and keeping them away from drugs. So anything that we can do as parents/teachers to help our students is worth any amount of money spent.
  3. With that logic Moore must have taken Ooltewah and given up 17 pts on the spread. We just might have another Pete Rose in the makin. Naw he wouldnt do that.
  4. not 100% sure but i think it is the 23rd of Jan. at bradley
  5. heard the other day that Jay may have some class problems. not sure if its from classes last yr or this yr.
  6. Drug testing has been put to used in some school systems in Georgia. Some of the thoughts that i posted were ways to help their student/athletes with any problems they may have with drug use. To get any drug testing done you have to get the support of the community, county commission, and then the school boards will jump in. School boards are afraid of law suits that is why you must have support groups available to the S/A's, that way the school board can cover their butts.
  7. 1st - I am for it. It should be done for all extra curricular activities, that means band, football, baseball, choirs, anything that a student does in representing your school. 2nd - You would have to have a plan set up for the student if he/she tested positive. (ex) follow-up testing, certain no. of games or events that they would be suspended from, drug classes. You just dont get rid of a student for testing positive once. 3rd - 2nd offense stiffen the penalities of the above mentioned. Something stronger to get their attention. 4th - 3rd offense not allowing any activities after school for a certain period of time. With drug testing with the parents paying the bill monthly. And last but not least on 4th offense kicking the person off the team until he/she can go 6,8 or even a year drug free before he/she would be allowed to participate in extra curricular activities. This would let the student continue to have a goal to clean his act up and not give up on our greatest commodity the student himself.
  8. It is truely amazing how something bad can be turned around for good. How total strangers can be united in a common cause and go to our Lord and Savior and pray for Matts recovery. I have prayed for not only his recovery but what God will do with this testimony that he has allowed Matt to have. I pray that this accident will bring people to the "Great Physician" and to the "Cross". My continued prayers, and may God receive the glory for it.
  9. The TSSAA had the right idea a few yrs. ago, when they had the Sectional Tourn. They brought together the top 3 teams from each region and had a tournament with the top 2 teams going to the "Boro". With the winner of each region playing the loser of another region. The problem with that is the traveling distance and the rental of larger arenas, in which, the TSSAA did not make the money they had hoped on making. So we have gone back to the conventional format and the blind drawing. I personally liked the Sectional format but money talks. Good luck to all the teams next week and GO BEARS!!!!!
  10. An outstanding game was scene by all tonight. Both teams played extremely hard and the crowd was as vocal as i have ever heard them before. The sportsmanship was exceptional by all who were there. Agreed that there were some over zealous fans on both sides but not enough to bring up and take away from what both teams showed on the court tonight. So lets not open up a can of worms and take away a great game tonight. Good luck to both teams in sub-state and GO BEARS.
  11. Charles Little is one of the better players in the state but we also have the before mentioned Wes Suiter, Yarrish Hammonds (Bradley Central) who has unlimited potential and a young man from Chattanooga, Jonathan Adams. Throw in a point guard and you would have the makings of a very good basketball team.

    Aaron Green

Well, someone has brought something up about the coke mch. Question: if Coach Green did not kick the mch, then who did. Answer: The players did then. Question: Where did they learn that type of behavior. Answer: Someone they respect? [Edited by ut46 on 2-18-03 9:29P]
  14. A coach is a coach and also a teacher. He must teach the fundamentals, tendencies of the other teams, and how to win and/or lose whatever the situation. A coach never wins a game and he never loses a game. The TEAM may however win and/or lose a game. No one individual should have that weight placed up on his or her shoulders, if truth be known the players get over loses better than coaches do.
  15. i would like to see the coaching box extended to the end of the bench. i was t'd up last yr for getting out of the box and i was just coaching and not bad mouthing the officials. i realize that some coaches might take advantage of this by bringing up some questionable calls and the officials wouldnt have to come by the bench every now and then to remind us to get in the box and they can do what they are paid to do, which is call the game. also, i hate the charging call when a player sets up under the basket. we need a line in the lane and if your in it, it takes away the question of charge or block. i would think it would make it a little simpler for the officials.
  16. Most tournaments get and ok from the TSSAA when they are doubling up on games. Nothing new for tournament play.
  17. The big question is, if cleveland would have won the game against mccallie would they still consider it a scrimmage game, i dont think so . whether they had their footballers or not should not come into the equation. did the fan pay to get in, did they sell concessions, and were there officials calling the game. duh sounds like a game to me.
  18. I guess you did not read exceptions to the rule with sr. If you would go back and read that if a player has a good attitude or is an asset to the team, then as a coach I would set the player down and explain the pro's she/he has for the team. God has blessed us all with talents and some of us use them to the fullest and He blesses some others with more ability than others. You can not hold back another player just because they are younger any more than you can play them for being an upperclassman. Players earn their time on the court. Players dictate who plays in the game. Every practice, and every game is an evaulation on the coaches part and the players are the ones who decide who is on the court. I would love to coach a team that has all players of equal talent but lets get real, it doesnt work that way. You play the players with the most talent then you have the others for situation or as role players. Their are exceptions to that. If a player is talented but has poor grades, or just in general a bad attitude that player conforms to the rules of the team or they are gone. NO ONE PLAYER IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE TEAM. I hope this clears up what I was getting at with the sr.
  19. Very interesting reading. I'm not sure that it was spelled out completely or maybe i missed something. In a lot of cases coaches dont keep players that are Sr. on their teams unless they are in the top 6 or 7 players. Then would come the Jrs. and Soph. for which they have next yr. to compete at that level. If it is a Sr. sitting the bench he is their for another reason, maybe he is great motivator, or leader of some sort but that would be understood by the player and the coach before the season started. A coach doesnt keep a player (sr.) on the team unless he is a valuable part of his team, b/c he would keep an underclassman from getting the experience needed. Second, playing time is between the coach and player. There should be an open door policy for any player to come and talk to the coach, no matter what the problem is. Parents can talk to coaches about grades, behavior in school or anything that they are concerned about but not playing time. Third, coming with a minute left in the game. There maybe a senior who deserves the recognition of what he has accomplished on the court, then the sub should go into the game. Who knows it maybe him/her next yr. or the yr. after. Also, if the coach is worth anything at all he is still coaching the game no matter who is in the game and until the horn has sounded. That is still court experience which is vital to that player. Fourth, basketball is a great game that everyone should experience but not all players or parents want to put in the time and dedication it takes to excell at a high level of playing. We have players who are upset with their shooting and havent went to a court on their own time to work on their shot. And the same players parent will be the ones wondering why their little darling isnt getting the PT they should be getting. Parents what have you done to push your daughter/son to get better. Basketball is a class just like eng. sci. or math. They have homework to do sometimes whether it is free throws, getting into shape, or any of the many things they need to do to improve. And last but not least, as a coach we spend more time with your kids than we do with our own families sometimes. Dont get me wrong we asked for it b/c that is what we love. The game itself is the fun of coaching the x's and o's, but the things behind the scenes that no one sees. Getting the gym ready for the game, concession stand, are the buses gased just to mention a few. Checking the grades and making sure the student/athletes have the right core classes to go to the next level (if they are good enough).Talking to college coaches trying to get them to look at some of our players so they can further their education. This is just a little of what a coach tries to do in the short time that we have. Just some thought from a coaches point of view.
  20. In this day and time coaches come under a great deal of pressure and are evaluated on there teams productions on and off the court. We as coaches do not go out and look for trouble, but when something comes to our attention then we must check it out. To many times coaches have turned their head from some mistakes that student-athletes have made and a larger problem has followed that s-a on in their later lives. When that happens we have done an injustice to that player, we have let them down and we have let down what sports is all about: integrity, honesty, work ethic and character. Also, whether it is the off season or in season the coach is still over that particular program, and the reputation of the program and the school might be questioned. You are always representing your coach, your team and your school so whenever something comes to our attention it should be looked into. And finally no one player is greater than the program he represents, or the team he is apart of.
  21. very good post ptguard. if the parents could sit through some of the practices, conditioning and other workouts they might realize why their little darling isnt getting the playing time they want. players make their time on the court not only during times for practice, but also on there own time. kids who want pt need to stay off the phone, computer games and put a basketball in their hands.
