Thanks for the ego boost Red, but in actuality I have a really huge rearend, and pull losts of stuff out of it /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> . I think that a Jeff County/Carter game would draw some pretty good crowds. The teams are on the same road(sort of) so there is a definite geographical rivalry that could come up. I think that the new head coach for JC is breathing some life into the program, and other schools could learn something by following the idea of bringing in a coach that has a tie to the school...for instance a former player. I feel that this is a great way to have the kids buy into the program, keep the coach(they are less likely to move on to greener pastures), and to keep the sense of community that high school football thrives on. Back to the question at hand, the schedules are already set for 2008 season, most schools will sign home/home contracts so they will just flip the schedule from this season. With enough push I think that the two teams could play starting 2009, again I think it will be a good money game and a community rivaly.

In response to MC, some of the teams in Region 1 do play some tougher teams. You mentioned Carter already, having played an improved South-Doyle team, Karns, AE, and Bearden. Seymour played the same South-Doyle team, Sevier County, Heritage, and Cocke County...not the toughest of teams, but SD and Sevier aren't terrible. Rutledge played Cherokee, Cosby, South Greene, and Gatlinburg Pittman. GP and Cherokee are pretty good. Gibbs played Cosby, Scott County, South-Doyle, and Halls. If I was ranking the teams by their non-region opponents I would say Carter had the tougher schedule followed by Gibbs. I think that these teams play a relatively tough non-region schedule, but the winning percentage still isn't very good...at least against the tougher of the teams. Carter was 1-3, Seymour 3-1, Rutledge was 3-1, Gibbs 1-3. I don't know the answer, but I think that it is going to take some new ideas and elbow grease to pull this region up with the big boys of Region 2. I think that it can happen, the right moves just need to be made.

I am not totally sold on the idea that the Region 2 teams are that much more a superior group of athletes, I think that there is a little more to consider. First of all, teams like Claiborne, Rutledge(Grainger), and Union have little to no feeder programs...and the one's that do do not play most of the Knoxville teams. This is a huge deal. With no feeder program coaches are forced to teach the fundamentals to Freshmen, instead of building off of the teachings of the little leagues. There are very few Freshmen that come into these schools ready to play varsity. The second thing that must be considered is the fact that Catholic, Fulton, and AE can and have beat about 90% of the teams, regardless of classification, in the state. Fullton and AE have been top tier teams in the state for the past decade, and Catholic is building a program that could be supreme in the state for many years to come thanks to their location and monetary support. My wish is that the Region 1 teams bust tail in the offseason, bring in some new blood at various openings, and come out with fire in the belly next season.

I agree with you Mav that beating Powell is a quality win, I left them off due to the fact that they were .500. If you consider the .500 teams AC has beaten, then you could throw Powell and Scott into the mix. I would say that those two teams are better than Karns, which would be the other "quality", not really, win for Carter. I still see these teams being pretty evenly matched, the winner will be the one that runs the ball.

Ok, I am under the impression that almost everyone is going with Anderson County. I feel that they are a good team that has survived the toughest region in the state. There is no true way to predict a winner, and we all know that games could go either way depending on how the kids are feeling, the weather, pregame meals, etc. But just looking back at the season I noticed a few things that may level the field for the lowly teams from Region 1: 1. Opponents win/loss rankings: Looking at the win/loss records of the teams that AC beat, it adds up to 22-48. Looking at the win/loss record of the teams that Carter beat, it adds up to 30-40. 2. Opponents' record Anderson County beat 1 team with a winning record, Kingston at 6-4. Carter beat 2 teams with winning records, Seymour at 8-2 and Rutledge at 7-3. 3. Points scored versus Points given up Anderson County has scored 273 points and given up 197 points which is a difference of 1.4 Carter has scored 228 points and given up 166 points which is a difference of 1.4 4. Losses Anderson County has lost to Catholic 10-0(27-14), Fulton 8-2(44-7), and AE 7-3(36-2) a final score of 107-23 Carter has lost this year to Bearden 9-1(38-0), South-Doyle 4-6(20-13), and AE 7-3(41-0) a final score of 99-14 I am well aware that statistics can be used to prove whatever you want, but as far as I am concerned these two teams are pretty evenly matched. I do not see a big difference between these two teams and this should be one heck of a game. Good luck to them both and may the winner play in Murfreesboro.

Not a problem sportsnut, that is why I am here. I think that this game will be won by the team that sticks to the run. This game will be won by the offensive line that wants to win the most; as are most games, but I think that between these two teams, the one that runs will be the one that wins.

Hey there Kev-B,t his is a game that no one is talking about, but could be a pretty good one to watch. The Pioneers are playing their last(maybe) game as Rutledge High School; due to the closing of their school and the opening of Grainger High School next year. I felt last week they had the ability to upset Carter, and they just about did it. I think that they are going to matchup pretty well against Fulton...Please consider before openly bashing me. IF, big if, Rutledge can control the ball, their offense is condusive to keeping the ball and eating clock. The quarterback is a heck of an athlete and may present some troubles to the Fulton D. The weakness of the Pioneer team is their defense, as seen in the blown lead atthe end of the Carter game. I think that if Rutledge can keep the ball on sustained drives, has 0-1 turnovers committed, and keeps Fulton from the big "special teams/turnover touchdown", the Pioneers could pull a major upset this week. Remember, never underestimate the power of a team playing as a whole with a purpose, like town and school pride.

AE had a tough game with a Kingston team that was peaking at the end of the season, was it a hangover from Fulton? I think that Seymour is a pretty good team. I said in the preseason that they would vie for the region title, and they came pretty darn close. I think that they are playing good football right now and have the ability to win this game...but their offensive gameplan may spell their doom. If you look at the games AE has had trouble in, 3 out of 4: Webb, Catholic, and Kingston, are tough running, tight formation teams for the most part. This tells me that a hard hitting, trapping, running team has had a better time with them than the spread teams, Carter and Brainard. If Seymour throws some changes at the Roadrunners, and mixes up the playcalls, they have a pretty good shot at the win and upset(I know Seymour is higher ranked, but we all know that AE is the favorite). If Seymour goes spread the whole game, AE wins 34-10. If Seymour mixes the pot a little, Seymour wins 31-27.

ruse?, I had a feeling that this would be a tough matchup for the guys in green. AC has always been a tough team to play, and Carter's record against them shows that(0-4). Keep in mind though, the last time they met was 1998, so the current regime in Straw Plains was not in power. The Mavs have played a gauntlet schedule, their only losses were to the big 3 in Region 2. They have not been afraid to put up points in their wins, 125 in the last 3 games is not half bad. If what you say about their quarterback is true, that he is a scrambler, then I can forsee problems for the Hornets. It is always tough to defend a quarterback that can ellude tacklers and sling the ball down field(see Sullivan South). Carter has been down and up this season...each of their losses was different. Using hindsight, Bearden was a pretty darn good team this year, winning 9 games and taking first in Region 1 5-A...and the Hornets were playing without a few key players. The South-Doyle loss is still slightly confusing, the Cherokees were better this year and you could blame early season jitters and a hangover from the Bearden game for that loss. The AE game was just a case of being scared into losing, or being intimidated, or whatever...AE must have used the same mojo Fulton has had the past few years, or they were just a much better team /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> . I see this one looking alot like the Livingston game a couple of years ago, should be a great one to see.

Should be a great game and a super atmosphere. The Jackets almost pulled the upset last week. I think that the style of football that Catholic plays sets them up to tougher games against hard-hitting, power teams; like Kingston. AE is more of a spread team and will use the big play to score, as opposed to Catholic's ball control offense. I think that Kingston will be playing for their lives and will therefore give AE a great game, but the Roadrunners will pull out the win on a defensive and a special teams big play. AE wins 34-20.

The final score in 05 was 35-0, so I guess I was off on that one. Last year was the one I was thinking about, 13-6. This is probably the Pioneers' Senior Night, and it is the last one that will ever take place for Rutledge High School, they will be fired up and fighting mad. Rutledge's only loss in the region is to Seymour, and they have scored over 40 points in 4 of their wins this season. This team can both run and pass the ball and have pulled one big upset this year, beating previously undefeated Gatlinburg-Pittman. Carter has been a feast or famine team this season, when they are playing great they look like a team that could go 2 or 3 rounds in the playoffs. When they are off they look bad and scared, see AE, Bearden, and Gibbs. This game has been close for the past two seasons, but if you look at the schedule the Rutledge game has come after the Fulton game in those years...not an off week. I look for this to be a close game because Rutledge will be playing for pride and won't quit. I am feeling an upset brewing in the hills of Grainger, I will save the prediction until Thursday.

I think that KevB's statement is completely accurate, that noone wants to be 4th and play a loaded Catholic team. But I am in slight contrast to your point Kev. I think that it is a great thing to make the playoffs, no matter what place. And remember, every dog has his day. Afew years back Union County was 4th and went to AE and almost shocked the world. To Pigeon Forge, good luck this week, I would love to see you guys in the playoffs. If you can acheive this, Coach Hammonds could get coach of the year from going 0-10(not him, but the team) to a playoff berth is a great thing.

I agree KevB, crazy nuttiness is going on. Rutledge is playing for a home playoff game this week, and I am sure that they want this bad, being the last season of Pioneer football. I can't see Gibbs winning against Seymour. If PF can get their running game rolling I can seriously see them beating Claiborne and taking 4th place. If they do that Coach Hammonds should get Coach of the Year for sure! Region 2 is pretty well set, barring Kingston upsetting AE and Catholic having another hiccup game this week.

New life has been breathed into the playoff possibilities for Region 1 after last night. With Pigreon Forge beating Gibbs that sets up a couple of new scenarioes. Gibbs could find themselves out of the playoffs if they lose to Seymour. If Gibbs loses to Seymour and Pigeon Forge beats Claiborne, the Tigers will find themselves in the playoffs. Should be a fun week in the region. Region 2 should have some questions decided tonight. Fulton and AE are playing for the likely 2nd and 3rd place tonight. Anderson County can take their next step to the playoffs by winning against Scott tonight. Kingston can cause all kinds of issues and move towards the playoffs if they pull off the upset against Catholic.

Will wait until after the game tonight to make a prediction. With the Gibbs loss last night Union County is back in the playoff hunt and may play tonight with a little more spirit. Tonight's game could decide how Rutledge goes into the Carter game; a win they will be on cloud 9 and playing hard, a loss may put them down going into the Carter game.

I think that we are both in agreement that there are 5 teams still alive, and that the final standings can take a dramatic shift from this week to week 10, which in my opinion is a whole lot more fun because the teams are really going to be fighting for their playoff lives. The last scenario that you listed with Seymour and Rutledge 1st and 2nd was the one that I was seeing that could actually happen. Rutledge could actually take 1st if they win out and Seymour loses to either Claiborne or Gibbs. There really are a bunch of other ways this thing could fall out.

Region 1 can really take a tumble in these last 2 weeks. There are many scenarios that could play out, I will not list them until this week's games are played. But mathmatically 5 of the 7 region teams can make the playoffs, and all of them except Carter can miss the playoffs if games go certain ways. It is really quite exciting to be a fan. Region 2 is a little more cut and dried, but there are some crazies that can happen. Kingston is 4th right now, but they have a tough road to hoe, playing both Catholic and AE. Anderson County looks to be more in line to make the 4th playoff spot with games against Scott and Stone. Here is the way I see the region shaking out, but I would love nothing more than to see some big upset games and blow all of this sky high! I also like Rutledge and Fulton. Could be fun watching games this November!
