  1. Do you know what grade she is in? Wow! If this is true, then Blackman will be more "loaded" than previously thought. Along with "T", Katie and Courtney and all the guards on the team, they should be very strong this year and hopefully get to go back to The Murphy Center! Go Blaze!
  2. Re: Rezoning... Here it is.... http://www.rcs.k12.tn.us/rc/rcs_new/New ... oning.html
  3. Just curious, but wasn't there a huge re-zoning this year from Riverdale to Blackman due to over crowding at Riverdale? I thought I read where RCS rezoned kids on Cason Lane, New Salem area, etc. and if the RCS asked that they be rezoned, then the kids were eligible to play sports at Blackman. I do not know which player you are referring to but his case may be different. I do think that Blackman is "open zone" now....???? I'm sure that some of the principals, coaches, parents, etc. that post on here all the time might clear it up for all us, but I remember something going on like that this past spring. In fact, many Christiana Middle school parents and Riverdale parents got phone calls and emails from RCS asking if they wanted to send their kids to Blackman to help with the problem, but were told that IF they volunteered, that they would have to provide transportation AND the athletes would have to sit out a year "FROM THEIR LAST PARTICIPATION DATE" in their particular sport.
  4. Final: Blackman 41, LC 0 No details since I wasn't at the game, just reporting the score.
  5. 4th quarter: Blackman 41, Lincoln County 0 per my kid who is having a big time celebrating! hmmm Maybe last week wasn't a "fluke"....
  6. Congrats to Laken! I had an opportunity to watch her play on her AAU team (Flight) I believe, at the big exhibition game at Blackman and I was amazed at how well she played and at her level of intensity. She will be a huge "plus" for MTSU women's basketball and I understand that she is a really good person with good character. That alone will carry her through life more than anything! Good luck Laken and we'll be watching you! I'm sure your family is very proud of you and all of the years of conditioning, practice and everything that goes with the sport has paid off!

  9. Just curious, will her team be playing any in July around the State? Would like to see Dye play--have heard alot of good things about her...don't think I've ever heard of the Panthers team before??? Are they out of Greeneville or something? Just wondering.... good luck to her this season!
  10. IMO, I believe that Shelby Campbell (Blackman) needs to be moved way up in the Top 12 category! Hoopgurlz (ESPN Recruiting) has her grade at 88 and Avant at 94 and Avant is going to UT?! Campbell is right on her heels as one of the best PG's in the State of Tennessee! Campbell is a D1 all the way! It's going to be a great season and it will be fun watching who moves up the ladder! Good luck to EVERYONE!
  11. Hoopgurlz also has a good rating for Shelby Campbell from Blackman!!! She plays great defense and drives to the bucket like no other! Campbell plays unselfish bb and will have a high number of assists this year with 3 tall posts playing for Blackman!
  12. Yes, Mt. Juliet has a very good looking team this year. I didn't see them play at Shelbyville, but did watch them at Blackman. Blackman won the first game, then the next day there was a rematch and Mt. Juliet won. Both teams were very "impressive" and had good fundamentals! Blackman also beat Memphis Central at the MTSU camp. Looking forward to the season! Best of luck to everyone!
  13. Would this be the same Byron Devinner that just wrote an opinion in the DNJ last week about how the TSSAA should enforce their rules like the NCAA does? Here's the link.... http://www.dnj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2009906140329

  15. I sure hope this player is on a "well known" and "highly visible" AAU team that gets her alot of exposure in state as well as out of state! I watched her play at the Murphy Center in the State Tournament this year and she is awesome to watch as is the whole team from SGHS. I hope she recovers from this injury quickly! She is one tough player! Will she be a senior this fall? Glad to see the whole state is well represented in Shelbyville! There are some good camps coming up at Belmont, Vandy, siegel/Blackman and MTSU in this area. Hoping for injury-free playing and good safe travel to all!
  16. Ok everyone--these are the teams listed on the tournament website: 14U TN Glory TN Team Pride 15U Knoxville Lady Panthers 16U TN Shock TN Glory White TN Glory Black Elite TN Flight Navy Can anyone report back as to how these teams did in the tournament? Were there any teams that played from TN that are not listed here? Thanks.
  17. Does anyone have the results from this past weekend's tournament at Kings Island? There were several teams from Tennessee in this one.....just wondering..... Thanks!
  18. Blackman 5, Independence 3 Final! (According to DNJ) Congrats Blaze!
  19. 2008-2009 TSSAA Handbook Article III Compliance (Page 17) Enforcement: Section 4: The Executive Director shall, in his discretion, determine whether information about any possible violation of the TSSAA Constitution or Bylaws is sufficiently reliable to justify "further" investigation. The Executive Director shall also, "in his discretion", determine whether to conduct any investigation of possible violations of the Constitution or Bylaws as well as the nature and extent of any investigation that may be conducted and the procedures to be used in any such investigation. Factors to be considered by the Executive Director in making these determinations may include, but are not limited to, the workload of the TSSAA office, the seriousness of the alleged violation, the availability of staff members to assist in any investigation, the cost of investigation, the time needed to conduct an investigation, and any other factor the Executive Director may deem releveant in making these decisions. Many infractions are reported to the TSSAA probably on a weekly basis; however, you can submit tons of documents; photos, videos, receipts, emails, real estate documents, text messages, etc. but if "the Executive Director" chooses to not "investigate it".....it is a dead issue, no matter what the "proof" may be. A thorough and full investigation takes a LONG time to complete---it is not a "10-day process". The 10-day process involves a few phone calls to the utility boards, landlords, the principal--maybe a few meetings at the school involved or a couple of cigars over a drink or too; and then a decision is made. A "full investigation" would take a VERY LONG time. As you can read in the bylaws above--sometimes they choose NOT to take this route and therefore; the issue is dead. IMO, this does NOT mean that the incident did not take place or that the "proof" was not there---it just means that "for whatever reason---they may choose to look the other way" or the TSSAA "just cannot "afford" a lengthy investigation--it's not in the budget, etc. Who knows what will happen regarding this particular MJ video--but 95% of coaches and school administration will tell you---that nothing will probably be done about it--regardless of whether the "rules" have been violated or what the video shows. One would believe that it is an "open and shut" case, but who knows? Stranger things have happened.
  20. Ahh yes....GAPET...... I'm so happy that you played 3 sports in HS and 2 in college. I'm sure that you would be considered to be an expert in this matter! I'm not sure what age you are, but in my "days" long ago.... most sports "ended" and were "finished" until the next season. In this thread---that is what most of the posters were saying....Whatever happened to the "season" being over---it seems that basketball goes on, and on, and on. If you played 3 sports in high school, then I would consider that awesome! I don't know many athletes who could do that as well as 2 in college! Good for you! This particular coach in the post above is an awesome coach! I only spoke the truth about her being "burned out" in high school; she has admitted that to me in the past as well as to several people. Nothing wrong with that--but she was VERY dedicated to her sport and probably regrets not playing in college. It is ONLY my opinion that she "pushes" too hard--similar to her old coach (in fact most people familiar with that--believe it to be true as well)-but I am not saying that she is not a good coach! I have even recommended her camp to some younger players' parents as recent as this past Monday. Her camps are phenominal and young players really respond to her. Most of the subject of this thread and most of my comments were actually "directed" at an AAU coach who said that no one that played for "him" or "her" would be allowed to play any other sports during the AAU season. All of the comments on this thread are related to playing "multiple sports" and most of the posters agree that some "basketball" coaches don't like it when their players participate in other sports or they have them in the school "conditioning" and they are too tired to play softball, volleyball, etc. There was also much discussion about burn-out, (and he said there is no such thing--it only means a player isn't "dedicated")---well I know for a fact, in her situation--that was not true; thus my comment about her high school situation. Now, personally the coach that you are referring to, did indeed tell my daughter on numerous occasions, whether it was tennis or golf---that if "she had time to be hitting a tennis ball or golf ball" then she should be shooting hoops instead". I'm glad that since this coach is now at Riverdale; she has changed her thoughts on participating in other sports! Good for her! Your post will not get me to say ugly things. If that is the way that you want to continue this year---go ahead. I believe it is very childish. Let's move on and be positive and support our coaches, players and each other! Just because we disagree on certain "things", doesn't mean we cannot act responsibly on message boards. If you would like to email me or phone me, to discuss your "hatred" towards me, then please do so. I know that you know who I am and I'm sure you have my phone number or you can get it from Coach.
  21. Wow! I strongly disagree with the comment: "dedicated ones don't get burned out"..... There is a top notch coach in Murfreesboro, who was one of the top ten post players in the US when she played high school basketball. She could have "signed on the dotted line" probably anywhere; but due to HER coach---she quit playing after her senior year in high school--DUE TO BURN OUT! The sad thing is---now that she is coaching---some of her players have "burned out" because she is using some of the same "techniques" that her old coach used on her. Some of that "weeding out" is due to over-zealous coaching--not from the players lack of "dedication"! This is not a business---it is a sport! Even though some players will go on to college and play ball---what in the heck are they going to do after college? For most of them, realistically, they will not be playing in the WNBA and if they do make it to that level---have you seen the salary for most of those players? They had better use those scholarships in college to "study". Hopefully, our daughters will learn THROUGH the game of basketball or other sports how to cope with life and challenges. But the sport alone, does NOT guarantee them a wonderful life! And they cannot get these high school years back again. You mentioned "the girls will appreciate their down time and not get burned out like they would by playing "multiple sports".....I'm laughing out loud! Since my daughter started playing basketball--there IS NO SUCH THING as DOWNTIME! She has NO LIFE outside of the gym. Now, she "chose" to do this--but it has taken it's toll on her this past year. For the first time ever--she said "I'm not sure if I want to play in college"......but that does NOT make her any less "dedicated" to her sport, team and coach right now. She is almost 18 and she is making a "decision" about her future...... so I really resent the comment about "lack of dedication". I'm glad you are not her coach!
  22. Excellent Post! Sports has been in our family for many, many years. While there are great coaches out there and most will work with the parents and their athletes; we have run into some over the past couple of years that "do not talk to parents" and "believe parents to be stupid". They won't return a phone call or answer an email. There is sometimes an "arrogance" that we used to never see in high school sports. (Most of the coaches I am referrring to are not married--nor do they have children--could explain alot of it) /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I do know that there are some crazy parents, but for the most part---most parents are just trying to "communicate". There needs to be a two-way street. What happened to summer break? Last summer, my daughter was getting calls from a previous high school coach saying "you need to go lift weights at Olympus--even though I'm not supposed to be talking to you now".....my daughter and her team mates were wanting to lay in the sun and hang out at the pool. Does anyone wonder why some athletes are experiencing "burn out"? So many players--play 6th - 11th and by their senior year--they are sick of it. That does not ALWAYS mean that they were not dedicated or not committed to their sport--sometimes they have been pushed too hard and end up resenting the time lost that they will NEVER get back. And as a result--I have witnessed some very talented athletes turn down scholarships because of "burnout" or didn't even try to get a scholarship because of it. Sometimes parents can be as bad too in pushing their athletes too much--so I'm not saying it always the coach. A great coach recently told me this. "When I'm coaching your daughter, let me be the pilot and you be the co-pilot; when you are the parent making a decision, you be the pilot and I'll be the co-pilot." Pretty good advice---I guess that is what landed him in the State Tournament this year! He has a great group of players AND parents and they respect each other. His players are not AFRAID of him; but they RESPECT him as their leader and they ENJOY what they are doing! They work hard and sometimes "take off from practice and have fun"!!!! Imagine that!
  23. Here's my 2 cents worth.... Our daughter played for a great basketball coach in high school. She never missed practice and did everything she was told. In the past, she had played softball, and soccer as well, but gave it all up to just play basketball--her choice. One day, (her sophomore year) she got interested in tennis--borrowed my racket and asked her dad to show her how to serve (he had played competitive tennis in his younger days). Well, needless to say, since she is an "athlete", she picked it up quickly and before we knew it, we were hitting on the courts every night and she developed a mean serve. She was laughing and having a blast! Well, one day when bb was over and it was the dead period...she mentioned to her coach that she had been hitting the tennis ball some and was loving it. The coach said....."if you have time to hit a tennis ball---then you have time to be shooting the basketball". Now keep in mind--she only has one month off from basketball--JULY. All of the other 11 months are spent on the court--AAU, Camps, School ball, practice, conditioning, etc. Now, I know all of this is a debate; but I watched her as she very sadly put away the racket and never hit the tennis ball again. She thought this coach "hung the moon"--so she did EVERYTHING that she was told to do. Well time has passed and she has learned a valuable lesson---there IS more to life! She can swing a club on the driving range that surprised even her brother and is actually wanting to get back on the tennis court--but her true "love" is still the round ball. She has learned to live for "herself", not for the coach. Coaches, BE CAREFUL. You never know when a player may have "talent" in another sport. Just because you coach one sport and believe it to be "the only sport", please do not discourage our kids from "trying" other things. I agree with the earlier poster--let them "ENJOY" their lives and play as many sports as they want to play or if they choose only one--that is ok too! But let THEM make that decision and please do not "sway them" either way. Cha-Ching....there's my 2 cents worth! Thanks!
