  1. Not very interesting, not closer than some people think
  2. Well, yeah, who doesn't want more goals scored? Just ask Mount Juliet
  3. G, I'd love to hear about the 4 different incidences. It would help us all learn and educate others. There have been tons of meetings and discussions on the USSF side of things, but probably not many on the TSSAA side of things, though the topic was covered at the coaches' meeting in Chattanooga. To me, it makes things much simpler. You don't have to read the mind of a player as to their intentions. Sure, sometimes it is obvious that a player misplayed the ball, but sometimes it isn't. And eventually, it will lead to much greater consistency on the calls, which is the reason for the change. I am not for or against this new interpretation, so I guess I am one of those people that say "well, that's the rule" . I mean, most any interpretation can knock you out of the playoffs. A DOGSO rule (which is also changing btw), a handling call (how many times has that changed over the years), I could go on. Personally, I am thrilled that IFAB revamped the laws. The laws had grown into one of those houses that keep getting added on until you end with stairs to nowhere.
  4. The offside rule "interpretation" was put in by FIFA 2 years ago. NFHS, whose rules Tennessee follows, added this interpretation this year. (As an aside, NFHS is always a year or two behind US Soccer, i.e., FIFA. An example is the new law that went into affect July 1 allowing the kick-off to go in any direction. I assume NFHS will adopt this rule next year). The interpretation is not really new, just clarified. The law has not changed. Obviously offside causes confusion by folks that have never bothered to read the FIFA laws or the NFHS rules, and lots of arguing among those of us that have read them. The new interpretation is meant to clear up the offside confusion that occurs when a defender plays the ball. Everyone should know that if a defender deliberately plays the ball, an attacker in the offside position is free to play the ball with no offside infraction. ( the exception being a ball coming off a save by the keeper) The interpretation emphasizes "deliberate". As trebs says, the referee no longer has to judge if a defender played it well or not. The only question becomes did the defender attempt to play the ball? So, if a defender goes up to head the ball, and the ball goes back toward the goal, offside resets. IMHO, the best way for a ref crew to handle this is not to raise the flag if a player score who is the offside position. The AR should stand stock still after the goal, so the center ref will have to go over to talk to the AR. Players should always play to the whistle. Nothing new here. How many goals have we all seen when players stop because they think an infraction has occurred? PLAY TO THE WHISTLE should be part of every coach's pregame instruction.
  5. Congrats, G! You need to get the TSSAA record book updated!
  6. As far as I know, all Chattanooga private schools are moving to D2.
  7. Do any of our Memphis people have the Rivals Tournament schedule the weekend of 9/9?
  8. Since Middle Valley Magic retired, I will throw out this top 10: 1) CCS - team to beat state-wide in A/AA 2) Baylor - can't wait until next year when they move to the newly created Division III 3) GPS - they will get the eyeball test this weekend 4) Notre Dame - very balanced, final record might be 5-5-5 going into playoffs 5) East Hamilton - Coach Hill finally has some depth 6) Walker Valley 7) Boyd 8) Cleveland 9) McMinn Central 10) Sequatchie County - their average margin of victory in pre-season is 16
  9. It's all good, brother. BTW - My liver has finally recovered from your tenure roaming the fence.
  10. Thanks, Hixson, for stepping up into that gauntlet! More public schools should do the same.
  11. Notre Dame 0 East Hamilton 1 This scrimmage was fairly even with both teams playing a lot of players. Both teams had about 30 players dressed, so a 20 minute JV scrimmage followed. ND will have a hard time scoring goals this year, which isn't anything that unusual given Schem's defensive tactical mindset. ND failed to convert two 1-on-1 ones with the keeper, and sailed a header off a corner kick just over the cross bar. I counted 5 shots on goal for ND, and 2 for East Hamilton. The East Hamilton goal came with about 10 seconds left in the game. It should be a fun season, and I will savor every game. I only have 2 left as a parent.
  12. I like the Georgia rule, where I also officiate games. They basically have a 10 goal rule, with some nuances. First checkpoint is at 20 minute mark of 1st half. If lead is less than 7 at halfway point, the entire half is played regardless of how big the differential gets. If lead is 7, 8, or 9 goals at the halfway point, the half ends and the 2nd half is shortened to 20 minutes. If the lead is 10 or greater at the halfway point, the game ends. Next checkpoint is half time. if the lead is 10 or greater at the half, the game ends. In the 2nd half, once a lead becomes 10 goals, the game ends.
  13. Well, it would be pretty odd if Greeneville wasn't ready, especially now that everyone has an extra day to prepare. I'm just wondering if this year will repeat history, or if beating teams by double digits will finally pay off?
  14. Do you think outcome will be any different than past years? Greeneville has won some games in the state tournament, but they seem to hit a wall when playing one of the alphabet, Christian schools. Scheduling is so important when preparing for a state tournament run.
  15. I don't know the schedule tomorrow yet, but I'm assuming all games will played at same time that they were scheduled today.
  16. I've only seen Houston play, and they made my Irish look like Welshmen. I will be very impressed by any team that gives them a game.
  17. I'm guessing Wednesday games will be on Thursday. We should have a CoachT reunion Wednesday night. Booger will bring some roasted possum. I've got some moonshine.
  18. Glad to see hard work is still working! Congrats to everyone who made it. Maybe others will be inspired to work harder.
  19. I'm not much on predictions, but it will be a huge upset if Boyd or Grace join ND or CCS at the state tournament. I think both ND and CCS advance to the Boro next week regardless of what happens on Thursday. Both Boyd and Grace do have very good coaches, so maybe they can scheme something up. I taught the current Boyd coach a lesson in how to win a playoff game with an undermanned team a few years ago in a middle school game, so hopefully he forgot.
  20. Chattanooga Grace beats East Ridge 5-0 Boyd beats Hixson 6-1
