  1. If it is open to the public and no film is involved it is perfectly ethical and it happens all the time in the summer. I do not think a coach should scout a practice but if it involves two teams or more and is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC no one can or should complain. The same thing applies to 7-on-7 events.
  2. I'm sorry to hear about his passing. My prayers are with his family. It's amazing to me how the extended CoachT family has grown and developed over the past decade.
  3. This time of year? Who is the interim?
  4. Don't think of it as a scrimmage... think of it as just having two squads to work with during two-a-days like at football camp.
  5. SPORTS PLUS JAMBOREE 2010 August 13th @ 7 PM Gibson County High School Dyer, Tennessee JACKSON NS vs USJ JACKSON SS vs JCS TCA vs JCM GCHS vs MCHS
  6. Deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and Viking football team from all the Gibson Co Pioneer football family, players and staff.
  7. Let me try to put this from a coach's perspective: #1 The TSSAA has tried to force AAU into a window that ends in July so that high school fall sports can begin practice in late July. It has been a struggle for 15 years. A lot of HS football coaches resent the TSSAA calender but what they don't realize is it is designed to curtail the influence of AAU and to forge a path for basketball to wrap up in June so that football can begin earlier in July. #2 Workouts in June after the end of school for football players can only be voluntary "OPEN FACILITIES" under the TSSAA restrictions and YES a high school can be fined and have other punitive measures placed against their program for violating this rule. I don't like this aspect of the regulations any more than any other head football coach in the state but we find positive ways to motivate our players to lift and we keep moving forward. #3 The rules the TSSAA has established work out just fine IF basketball turns their kids lose after the dead period and a football coach can get his baseball players within a reasonable amount of time in July. It's too bad that the TSSAA or some organization can't get a consensus between summer baseball organizations, AAU, and high school coaches to workout something but what has been done is the best option football coaches have to get their players in July. #4 7-on-7 is cut short this season due to the way the dead period falls. #5 PLAYERS WILL FIND A WAY TO GET PREPARED if coaches sacrifice their time and keep the weight room open. We open our weight room up twice a day AM/PM and our players have plenty of options to get in to workout. The trick in any school is to motivate your players to come to the weight room in June. #6 Workouts in JULY can be mandatory because we have the first 10 days after the dead period to workout without pads and two-a-days begin the last full week of July. We will be focusing on our passing game in those first two weeks like most all schools in the state but I know lots of programs that are spending that time lifting and running and it will be mandatory in those programs for boys to attend. BE CREATIVE, MOTIVATE AND ENCOURAGE, SCHEDULE WITH AN OPEN MIND, DON'T BE LOCKED INTO THE PAST! FIND A WAY TO GET IT DONE WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE RULES!
  8. One of my former colleagues said the local leaders have changed their mind on this dumb idea; however, that does not explain why Coach Smith was told he could not coach his daughter and Coach Morris was told he could not coach his grand sons? Maybe that was just rumors too?
  9. Ask Carlos Smith if it is false. What about football at Huntland, they will be effected too. When people make these kinds of rules they don't understand what impact it will have on families.
  10. The Jackson Area football Jamboree will be held at Gibson County HS on August 13th this year. We need one more football team to round out the lineup of eight teams. Any team not scheduled that is interested should contact Coach Lee Atkins at leeatkins@hotmail.com

  12. I was informed by a friend who still works in Franklin County that the new policy is a HEAD COACH in any sport) CAN'T COACH A SPORT that their SON or DAUGHTER plays? Is this true? If so, is there any school system in TN that has this policy?
  13. Thanks. You guys have some real talent in that senior class. I truly wish you the best of luck!
  14. Nitro14: Good luck to you and your son this coming season. I wish to express my sincere regret and expression of remorse for the loss of this brave young man. As many know, my oldest served in Iraq and I have lost a few former players in the service of their country. Football seems so small when we consider the sacrifices our sons and daughters are making overseas, let's always remember and cherish the memory of these former gridiron heroes who have given the last measure of devotion to their country.
  15. Terrance Martin is one of the best athletes I have had the privilege of coaching. I was somewhat surprised when he switched his commitment to The Citadel but it does not surprise me that he would go to that type of program. To paraphrase Robert Frost: he is taking "the path less traveled." TM will excel and thrive in that military environment. He could have been a standout at many other schools with his stats (top RB by the numbers in TN in 2009) but he chose to go the difficult path to a traditional military school environment. I am proud of him and I believe that someday he could wear another type of uniform in four years. If he chooses that career path or continues his dream to be a sports broadcaster or coach after he hangs up his cleats, he will do just fine! Orlando and Bam did a great job raising TM and we are all very proud of him.
  16. I'm out of state interviewing for the next few weeks... Could end up back in TN.
  17. After this year... I hope we go back to the old scheme taking the top four schools from each region leaving all six classifications in place. This will require drawing new regions...

  20. Do not count Bob Winston out of this race. He has been a head coach at three or four schools (Watertown, Jackson County, and Mt. Pleasant) in two sports and is journeyman assistant coach (FCHS, Franklin HS, Page, Coffee Co, Marion Co, etc.) known and respected across the state of TN. I do not know of a more loyal and dedicated professional... I hope he get's a serious shot at this position.
  21. Congratulations to Coach Morris Rogers (Former AD, Principal, and long-time coach in Franklin County) and all the new inductees into the Tennessee Coaching Hall of Fame. A total class act if ever there was one!
