  1. I'm not sure if it has been mentioned recently, but Maryville is only 4 games back from Dobyns Bennett for the all times football wins in the state of Tennessee. Conceivably, Maryville could surpass DB for the wins lead during the playoffs. If DB loses to Smyrna in the first round, and Maryville wins the state championship then Maryville will be have the lead for all time football wins. If Maryville loses in the state championship then they will be tied with DB at season's end. I've tracked Maryville's ascension up the all time win ranks since 1995 and it is pretty astounding how fast they've climbed the ranks. In 1995, Maryville was 8th all time in wins and was 86 games back (see below). Season Overall Games Back Rank Team Year W L W L 1 Baylor 1995 8 4 578 204 0 2 Dobyns-Bennett 1995 7 4 577 182 1 3 Memphis Central 1995 6 4 561 291 17 4 MBA 1995 12 2 532 283 46 5 Christian Bros 1995 8 2 529 256 49 6 Haywood Co 1995 14 1 507 274 71 7 McCallie 1995 7 3 496 276 82 8 Maryville 1995 11 1 492 194 86 9 Oak Ridge 1995 11 1 440 119 138 10 Alcoa 1995 11 3 439 227 139 11 Milan 1995 10 3 426 275 152 By the end of the current 2016 regular season Maryville is only 4 games back (see below). 2. Stars…Maryville is indeed only 19 wins back from DB for the lead in the all-time wins column. If you go back to the end of the 1995 season Maryville was in 8th place overall in all-time wins (492-194)…86 games back from the leader Baylor (578-204). DB over took Baylor for the lead in wins the next season (1996). Fast forward to today and Maryville (745-215) sits in 2nd place to DB (764-226) in all-time wins…19 games back. Since the beginning on the 2000 season, MHS averages 13.9 wins per year whereas DB has averages 9.7 wins per year…a difference of 4.2 games per year. If these averages hold up, Maryville should pass DB in wins in 4.5 years (2019 season). When looking at the biggest movers in the all-time wins list since 1995, only a few teams stand out across the state. Maryville made the biggest jump at +61 games, Alcoa was 2nd at +20 games, Milan was third at +10 games and DB was the only other team (+1) to decrease the gap between them and the #1 team.
  3. Sure Sarah, that would be great. And maybe in 20 years when Independence has a 100 wins we can celebrate then as well.
  4. With Maryville's win tonight against Farragut they are now tied with MBA for 2nd all-time wins. An impressive fact is how fast they caught up. In 1999, they were 4th and 69 games behind the then #2 Baylor. They have since surpassed Baylor and lead them by 20 games. They were also 45 games behind then #3 MBA. If their success continues, they should catch DB in 15 years or less. WINS 1. Dobyns-Bennett: 712-214-29 2. Maryville: 665-213-34 2. Montgomery Bell Academy: 665-315-46 4. Baylor: 645-281-39 5. 6. Actually, there are 4 schools in Blount County: Maryville, Alcoa, Heritage, and William Blount. In Hamblin County there are only 2: East and West. So, one could say you are doing less with more. As for Mo-West being the only team Maryville has lost to, there again you are incorrect. We've actually lost to a few others: 2000 Alcoa 7-14 L Central 14-21 L Heritage 0-28 L Halls 14-21 L 2001 Morristown West 24-31 L (MHS won the rematch 23-7 in the semis) 2003 Morristown West 14-17 L Your 2003 team was great. Too bad you couldn't get it done in the finals, losing 21-0.
  7. With the win against Powell last night, Maryville surpassed Shelbyville??™s Bedford Training Academy for Tennessee's longest win streak (65-0). What an awesome accomplishment. They still have some work to get to Bedford's unbeated streak of 82 games, but who knows...maybe someday. Currently, they have the second longest win streak behind South Panola (Batesville, MS), and 8th longest all time in the US (not including 8 man and 9 man teams). http://www.blounttoday.com/news/2008/sep/1...eaking-history/
  8. 38-8. Clinton's 1st team scores against Maryville's waterboy, trainers, and 5th grade all stars.
  9. 38-0 in the 4th...the mercy rule is in effect.
  10. I live here in Mississippi now (would love to move back to Maryville) and South Panola is the real deal. I can forsee them giving De La Salle and Independance a run on their win streaks.
  11. 12. Here's a few names I'd consider... Carl Stewart RB Brent Burnett QB (Cade Thompson 2nd string) Aaron Douglas TE Tyler Maples WR/DB/PR Danny Spradlin LB (Played for UT & Dallas Cowboys) Chuck Prugh OL Nick Black OL Matt Blankenship LB Dwight Wood DE
  13. Here are the National rankings this week for Tennessee High Schools: Maryville: unapproved website 50 cnnsi 8 espn 9 prepnation 22 risemag 13 studentsports 19 usatoday 15 MBA: unapproved website 25
  14. I think Aaron Douglas from Maryville should repeat as the 4A Mr Football for linemen. He's become a lot more versatile at the TE position than last year. Also, Brent Burnette (Maryville QB) should be a finalist for the best back. His stats through week 8 are below: Comp-Att-Int: 119-172-4 Comp% 69.2% Yards: 1853 TDs: 18
  15. I don't think the public-private split matters at all in terms of this record. MHS has been playing football since 1927, so this is a culmination of the last 80 years. Historically Maryville has been a pretty solid team throughout the years. We've been state champs in the 60s, 70s, 90s, and now 2000s. Also, we haven't had a losing season since 1961. Not many teams, if any, can also claim that stat. Yes, the last 10 years have been good to us but that goes hand in hand with the arrival of George Quarles. Someday he will leave this program, but I guarantee another coach will continue the winning tradition at Maryville.
  16. With Maryville's win last night and Baylor's loss, Maryville is now tied with Baylor for 3rd in All-Time Wins All-Time Wins (Top 5) 1. Dobyns-Bennett: 694-207-28 2. Montgomery Bell Academy: 642-310-46 3. Baylor: 633-270-39 3. Maryville: 633-213-33 5. McCallie: 583-317-44 *Since the 1997 season MHS gained 93 games to date on Baylor. Next team in sight...MBA. 17. Bob Cifers - Dobyns Bennett In 1938 he shattered the national high school football season scoring record of 211 points. He scored 235 points in his 1938 junior season. He led the nation again his senior year scoring 164 points. Cifers' high school record in Track and Field is even more improbable. He was a member of three Dobyns-Bennett TSSAA State Champion Track and Field teams (1936, 1937, 1940). He was also individually crowned TSSAA State Champion, a record ten times, in five separate events. The first and most impressive was winning the 1936 TSSAA state shot put crown as an eighth grader (Shot Put 50'-0" as an 8th grader!). A total of thirteen (ten individual, three team) TSSAA State Championships is a record in track and field that has stood for six decades and is currently not in jeopardy of being broken. Cifers set the single game punting record in the National Football League with an average of 61.8 yards for four punts. The record still stands. He had a good chance to win the Heisman trophy his senior season at UT, but he hastily signed a contract with the Detroit Lions negating his ability to continue playing for UT. I knew Bob when I was a boy in Chattanooga and he was a really great guy and his family was full of great athletes. Here's a link to an old article about Bob. : http://web.archive.org/web/20050112202643/...ffame/Cifers_B/
  18. I think William Blount will be Maryville's hardest test in the regular season. IMO WB will make at least the semifinals of 5A.
  19. According to unapproved website these are the current longest win streaks in Tennessee: Maryville 46 Jackson Christian 11 Brentwood Academy 9 Smyrna 9 Whitehaven 6 Knox Webb 6
