  1. Go back to the way it used to be, combining the current 5 into 3 classes. Toss out the public / private separation and let 'em all settle it on the field depending on the size of the school population. A AA AAA Getting quite tired of trying to find games two hours away when the real rivals are (and always were) in our own respective counties.
  2. "Move along folks there's nothing to see here, no crime, just be on your way." :justwrestle: MHS, ditto that post. Walter, Jr.'s neither an angel or a thug. That describes most people, eh? And if he hadn't won Mr. Football... Hillsboro High School--2003 AAAA Footabll State Champs.
  3. MHS Thanks. If you really want to make a difference and are planning on attending, sit on our side of the field and cheer for our kids. As you saw the past two years, we can never have too many good fans making noise. Burros by 14.
  4. Everybody here agreed last week Melrose's defense was just about as stout and stingy as it gets. We rushed near 500 yards on the guys. Their points were directly related to 5 Burro turnovers, not ramming our defense down the field. Last year we got 26 points on the ground, the hard way v. Maryville, who would have been Super Bowl Champs if HS basketball season didn't interfere with it. Bring on MoWest.
  5. On depth, I agree it is our biggest disadvantage. First v. Maryville now v. MoWest. That's why Hillsboro wil lbe best served by running up a three of four TD lead before rotating its starters and 2nd teamers. The seconda statement is lacking: even though we haven;lt won the gold, being there two years in a row and hanging well with Maryville is the best practice a program can get. MoWest never made it that far in recent years. I also agree it will be a close game -- until we've had possession about four times -- then we'll see big ol Mowest in our rear view mirror... getting SMAller... Smaller...smaller...
  6. Touche, my good man. Touche. Maryville and a persistant effort go hand-in-hand. They teach it well. Now, I hope you got some work done today. Peace.
  7. Can Brad Doss throw the football? Yes, he's completed many pass attempts this year--some for TD's. A shovel pass to Calvin Bryant provided our first score last week v. Melrose. Brad's arm is fully capable, and his judgement (pass, dump, run, or take a sack under pressure) will be better this title game, too. Will Hillsboro pass the football come Sat? Little, if any, I suspect. The Burros won't need to do through the air what can be done more easily on the ground.
  8. Please note that this in only one poster, and does not represent Hillsboro football. Maryville fans, ignore this poster. He is not expressing the view or attitude of Hillsboro football. StanTrott Good morning. I represent Hillsboro football as much as you do. You didn't write "the book". Several Burros I've heard from since last Dec. aren't so much mad that Maryville won last year -- they're mad about the way some of their players rubbed it in...all the way to the Shrine Game last summer--atleast one Rebel is on the team this year. So for the record: Hillsboro didn't choke. I was also one of the first ones on here last year congratulating the Rebels on their win. But my opinion of their program has become somewhat more tapered aince then. And if you couldn't detect some of the sarcasm in my posts then that's your problem.
  9. Easy to say it when you don't have to play it. Ah don't let the little man and his computer bother you too much. He has waited two long years to gloat about Maryville getting beat because his Burros and their mighty coach had two shots and could not get it done. MHS So how's da view from the back seat? Looks nice up front. Peace. Kind of hard to see back here. The sun is shinning bright and the light on all these Gold Footballs has vision down to about zero. You should be fine though. Even if you don't get outcoached again Saturday as you have the past two years one should not pose a big problem. In all honesty I hope for your sake you guys win. I would hate to be you on this board if you don't. I think I remember you though from last year. You were the one making some type of excuse for the 2001 game and some scheme your coach used on defense that backfired and vowed it would be different in 2002. All BS aside you guys have had great teams the past two years. And as I have told the Mo West fans on other threads we got beat by the better team this past saturday. I am not into excuses. Nor would I ever hate another program for any reason. You ought to try humbleness sometime it might look good on you. Be careful. If Pearl Cohn can beat you on a given night this year Morristown West can as well. Don't know your age but were you around when Namath and the Jets played the Colts in the Super Bowl. Anything can happen. Nah. That wasn't me. The only excuses we had was not enough great players to last a full game. You really had us on that one -- both years. No one can deny that a deep bench is a definite bonus. That will just about the only advantage MoWest will have Sat. Joe Willie Namath: yes, he predicted a miracle win in the late 60's for the Jets, I believe. They pulled it out, too. We will win it sat., but we are not long shots by any stretch. Oh, when we win don't none of you's guys try to horn in on the victory shots! I know these celebrations started to become a habit in early Dec. with you Rebs! Man! Why couldn't Maryville win last w/e?! Say Cheese!
  10. Saintdogg Thanks for the kind sentiments. It took all we had to prevent Melrose from pulling out the win, what with coughing up the dang ball 5 blasted times. Glad we got that out of our system. How was Melrose 2 points away from being in back-to-back state finals?
  11. 2002 Champs. 2003 Chumps. Yadda yadda. Whatever. We wanted the Rebs, not you guys. MoWest will have to do this time. Tell me, how do you plan on beating the donkeys?
  12. Easy to say it when you don't have to play it. Ah don't let the little man and his computer bother you too much. 13. C-man said: "I don't see Hillsboro running on MoWest." Okay. How about: roll over, bulldoze, ram through, step over, breeze by. I like those adjectives better, too. This week, ask Melrose's "vaunted" defense what our 400+ yards rushing felt like after the game. Then, this Sunday morning ask MoWest's defense the same question.
  14. Hillsboro replaced 21 seniors and is in the finals. Again. We'll gladly take that...and a gold football this time, to boot. Don't let your opinion of me color what you think about the Burro football program, even though I dare say many of them (Present and Past) feel the same way about Maryville. It's not just our turn with MHS out, we would have taken the thing no matter who we played. MBA--that means you, too. GO BURROS!!!
  15. MHS NEWSFLASH: Hillsboro neither solicits or expects to get any support from Maryville fans. Support MoWest for all I care. Most of you guys think the west TN border runs along the Cumberland Plateau, anyway. Hillsboro will put on a good clinic and become new 4A champs. At their own hand, your rebels are out of this hunt. Too bad. We had a favor to return. Deal with it. I have zero sympathy for you guys. Peace. GO BURROS!!!!!
  16. Tibbs won't have the same trouble turning the corner on pursuers this Sat., as MoWest will be busy not only catching him, but bringing him down as well. He can be every bit as punishing as Calvin. When Justin sees a good lane, label him "gone". Jamie Boyd can do fine at FB. Brad has "come into his own" at QB: that to me was the final piece to the champ. puzzle. My only other concern is having enough of a point spread in the 4th qtr., as we don't go very deep in several positions. I, too, am impressed with Zac Atkins' pursuit and tackling ability. Glad he transferred. We had some key additions last summer.
  17. Scrappy Define how Melrose was "more physical" than Hillsboro. Hillsboro ran Melrose up and down the field, gaining nearly 500 yards total rushing. Melrose's score is deceiving as they depended heavily on turnovers at midfield or better. I thought we more than matched them "hit for hit", stopped 'em two times at first and goal and stuffed their two point try that would have won it. I won't disagree it was an exciting game, just like last year but with lots more scoring. I compare this game to the Ali / Frazier fights, trading one crushing blow for another -- that is, if we didn't kill each other first. Did you see how Calvin broke his ankle? Did it get stepped on? It seemed like just a freak accident. And yeah the white cadillac was classier than an ambulance, I liked seeing #2 hold up the "We're #1 index finger" through the crack in the back window. Lastly, Tibbs was great in the first half as were his formidible blockers downfield, but Justin and Brad got the big yards going down the stretch after the keyed on Tibbs.
  18. I am sure Hillsboro's M. Tibbs has several offers on the table.
  19. MHS Well you guys picked a fine time for the OK to finally work. First things first. As for the Melrose game. Yeah, I remember Melrose scoring early in the game on a good drive. But got stuffed for a loss by our SS on the 2 point try. Figured they went for 2 since their PAT kick unit was shaky. Our TD was the result of incredible field position just before the half after one of our guys recovered a muffed Melrose pitchout deep in Melrose terriorty. Fridge Bryant (Remember that name) steamed it in a few plays later I believe. Other than that -- there was a lot of blood sweat and tears between the 20's. Neither defense would give up much more than that. Hillsboro ran out most of the last few minutes on a few key 3rd down conversions. Seemed like 10,000 Melrose fans showed up literally out of nowwhere. Overflowed. WATCHING FROM THE STREETS THROUGH THE FENCES. One thing bothered me though. With under a minute left, and during live play the offical timekeeper ( a ref on the field I presume) forgot to restart the game clock on several Melrose plays. Finally the clock resumed and time ran out. Great game then. Looking forward to another Fri.
  20. Stan Trott Did you take one of the HHS booster buses to the Melrose game last year?
  21. KWC Interesting stuff. Those criteria make more sense than <4.4 second 40 y/d times. I like the idea of rewarding athletes for meeting specific goals and other special achievements. Kind of like the buckeye stickers we always see on Ohio State helmets. I'm sure there are many other examples.
  22. MHS Good points. When I say "trick plays" it is meant as pulling off something more than a defense would expect. Of course, it is the goal of all team to do this to an extent. To score we all know Team "X's" offense is going to play to Team "Y's" defensive weakness while also utilizing its own offensive strengths to the fullest. But, say Team "X" resorts to unconventional, low percentage methods and playcalling to retain a possession (onside kick in the 3rd) and achieve instant success (the hook and lateral in the first half and tight end pass in the 4th quarter both resulted in TD's). It tells me one of two things: other methods aren't working or there is a need to use the element of surprise, force Team "Y's" defense to overpursue (as you said); disrupt Team "Y's" rhythm and momentum before they put the contest out of reasonable reach. When any team lines up for an obvious onsides kick, there is no trick or surprise to it. It's just who finally lands on the ball that counts. Hillsboro's players were told to be on the look out for the possible onsides kick, but again MHS lined up and approached th kick as though it was going to kick away. Instead the k/o unit executed an onsides kick to perfecction and perfectly disguised it till the very end. This play not only took away Hillsboro's emotional steam, HHS did not recover its mindset in time to respond effectively to the completed pass from the tight end, leaving it first and goal from about the 2 for the game winning TD. For right now, I'm only concerned with Merose.
  23. gator Hillsboro led Maryville practically all game last year. Were it not for three trick plays going 100% right for Maryville and their deeper bench (which we can't help), then Hillsboro would have won. As for Hillsboro being outcoached, you don't know what you're talking about. Both staffs are exceptional in their own right. Fans for either team will attest to that much.
  24. StanTrott Dang! Why are the boys over at Dudley/ That place is haunted! I'd sooner let 'em bang bones at Woodlawn. But Nope. Had to work. Did you see them today?
  25. Hillsboro wins a squeeker, 9-6. Home field advantage: Means more than having more of your team's fans and boosters to cheer you on. There is also no time and energy lost riding the "doghouse" for 4 hours, waiting in said house prior to game time. Lousy food. Strange locker room and other facilities, etc. It all adds up. Defense: If it's true that "You're only as good as your last win" the Burro defense proved vs. stratford that it may allow some yards in penalties, but if the ball doesn't cross the goal line or through the goal posts it means little more than field position. Stratford was shut down four times inside the ten yard line last week. Hillsboro has a battle tested, hard nosed, stingy 1st team defense that will not give more than a TD this Friday. This is the Burros hallmark. Allow very points. All double digit points scored against this year's Burros are deceiving as this is when the 2nd a third teams came in to mop up. Mr. Football Finalist in Fisher, Jr, at linebacker, among others. Earned two shutouts, could have easily notched five more had the first teamers stayed in the whole game. Melrose has a vicious, quick defense that will match the Burros blow for blow. Should be a true battle. Offense: Burros scored an average 43 ppg without breaking a sweat. No disrespect, but many of these games were over in the 2nd qtr. Melrose will be the best defense faced by the mules all year. Without benefit of a key tiurnover deep it will be difficult for us to reach double digits on the ground -- passing game offense / defense wil not be tested, I believe. Too much at a stake. I'll give the nod to Melrose's "A. Heffner" at the qb position. Doss is effective, but Heffner was 'lights out' last year; we will see this kid play on Sundays some day. Special teams: Burros still have a solid PK this year. This is key for ensuring the all important PAT -- an opponent that has to rely on a two-point conversion is at a distinct disadvantage. This area alone played heavily in Hillsboro's last two wins against Memphis East and Melrose. Also, pinning teams deeper in their own territory consistently pays long term dividends. Lines: Melrose has the edge in size on both sides of the ball but will it be enough to make a difference in a game like this? Coaching: Hey, both staffs are darn good. What it all boils down to is the kids executing the play-calling. Intangibles: Hillsboro has the mental edge because it has cleared the semi-final hurdle the past two years. Melrose on the other hand has a score to settle. These kids lost a heartbreaker last year -- and took it like MEN. This inevitable rematch has been circled on a lot of Memphis calendars for the past year. Although I predict a Burros victory, the game could easily come down to a key turnover or big play, costly penalty, bad call, whatever. One of these events will likely decide the outcome. Melrose will bring a good sized, loud crowd, too. Expect an overflow in total. This one wil be fun for all involved! GO HILLSBORO!!!
