    The Tennessean

Twitty, here's the 2003 comcast game link: http://www.coacht.com/story.cfm?doc=7471
  2. Please do more than hope we'll win...help us get more people to go to the games and support the team. We have an active booster club that always needs support, too. With the exception of a few private schools Hillsboro's the best game in town on Fridays --- and only $6.
  3. We've been to the state finals the last two years. So, that's three times total in the past fifty years. Not exactly rich in tradition - -but we're working on it. How do you call losing by a touchdown in 2001 and a field goal in 2002 "falling apart"? All we needed was fresh legs in the fourth quarter and a little luck to go our way. Perhaps this is our year.

    The Tennessean

Best I remember The Tennessean has some feature stories on certain teams and players and publishes a full section dedicated to all the area high school football teams. Should see it in the next week or so. Starting last year the Tennessean improved and expanded their high school game coverage on Saturdays (more stats, photos, writers / correspondents). Pretty good when you figure they're competing for space with VU / UT / Titans / Predators and other college FB teams. The City Paper does something similar preseason as well, including a rundown of each teams' strengths and weaknesses, predictions for district champs, etc..
  5. Bryan Mullen with the Tennessean is in his second year as the preps editor. He's a great guy with an entertaining and often witty writing style -- I hope they give him and his counterparts plenty of copy space soon (high school ball's been here alot longer than the Titans!). Harold Huggins (a local sports writing institution) and others at the Nashville City Paper have been writing good pieces on local HS summer practices / scrimmages for two weeks already.
  6. Ehhh, nine months should be enough to get over the championship game loss. Hillsboro had some patching up to do from last year's graduating class (six of whom are playing D-1 ball right now, and a seventh will probably walk-on as a kicker at WKU) ). We've effectively filled the holes at offensive line with rising juniors, seniors and a few key transfers (including some from Overton, haha). I predict Mr. Footbal candidate picks for FB Calvin Bryant and LB Walter Fisher. One question mark was at kicker - but we have found a converted soccer star who is regularly booting it into the end zone in practice -- he's getting better on FG's and punts, too. This team is HUNGRY for a ring. What killed the Burros the last two years in the champoionship game was not having a deep enough bench to rest starters -- hopefully we can remedy that situation a little more this year, e.g., throw in a few tuba players, etc.. And who can forget EVERY ONE of the Rebels trick plays worked last year-- sheesh, what are the odds? Maryville proved they were still champs by converting and not losing compsure. Alas, I wish we had better competition leading up to the last two rounds of the playoffs where we have a reason to keep starters in past the 1st or 2nd qtr.. But we'll deal with it. They say third time is the charm. We'll see.
  7. Walter Fisher is doing better at his school work and will be back next year to wreak havoc. He's taller than he is wide but loves to hit. I agree about John Henry - nicest kid you'll ever meet but was known as being a "softie" in practice. I saw where Coach Mac and staff have really shaped John up in the workouts an weight room...Good for John.
  8. Florida is pretty interested in him, and if offered Terrance will jump at the chance. Sadly a lot of kids these days with plenty of ability, heart and grit on the HS gridiron don't draw any interest from D-1, mainly because they aren't the biggest kids around. Kids like John Henry and Terrance -- although very capable -- are 'D-1 automatics' mostly because of their size. Somehow this doesn't seem fair. Ahhh, my brave 2002 Burro's: as the days go by the pain lessens bit by bit...
  9. 7 Maryville picks to one for Hillsboro? I wouldn't wipe my dogs' butt with this state poll. Seriously. It's always about the hype, but one would expect sportswriters to show some restraint. I haven't seen a HS football player's poll yet this year that was balanced, thoughtful and fair - - and one, All-Region 5-4A, had a few TOO MANY Hillsboro players on it for what that's worth; so this isn't a crack on Maryville for those of you who are getting all bowed up.

  11. We had you guys and everyone knows it. We were also a lot better than people thought. Why didn't we run the ball our last two series? Fridge, Tibbs and the line were all exhausted. We had our QB out there playing DB in the 4th quarter for friggin' sakes. Need I go on -- you saw it. Like last year, we had many great players, but not ENOUGH to last a full game when it mattered. Hats off to M-ville for having a deep roster and keying on our mistakes. No need to list them here. I enjoyed reading the posts here on the game -- mostly from M-ville fans. The Burros players and coaches should read those words and garner some good from them. Your team showed poise and class-- as did the Burros. It's a shame we had to lose but that's sports. We don't have to ask Melrose how it felt last week 'cause we've been there - three times in three years and twice to the same team. But there is solace in knowing we lost to a two-time defending state champ and arguably the best team in any class or division. Sure, this one's gonna hurt but not for as long as people think. As Maryville has a long tradition of winning gold (and it helped last night), we've only recently started our chase. We will build on it. The day will come soon when Hillsboro is state champs and I'll be there to see it. Congrats to both teams in a hard fought game. [Edited by KP9481 on 12-8-02 1:07P]
  12. On the other side of cole is a player who is tremendous he may not be as big but he packs a lot bigger punch, believe me. Hillsboro is not worried about this guy [Edited by KP9481 on 12-7-02 8:29A]
  13. Looking good for Nashv. and the Midstate. Congrats Mustangs.
  14. You are quite a character. I will be looking forward to making your acquaintance. I'll also bring over some buffalo wings -- hot or hot as heck? 'Course, I'll also be busy hunting down a jeweler to size about 75 ring fingers. Ahem. Burros 13 Rebels 7
  15. Are you all tailgating thsi time? I remember last year seeing some of your fans in the eastside parking lot across from the stadium.
  16. blowing into town tonight or leaving M-ville tomorrow morning? I hear all the state finalists' buses are getting a police escort, just like last year. Our guys are staying in town tonight and having a night- before meal with their teammates, parents, coaches and boosters.
  17. Hillsboro 13 MHS 7 You all have not faced a menacing defense the likes of which will be unleashed on your kids Saturday. We will make believers out of all of you. Mark this post and bring the Kleenex.
  18. Make sure there's plenty of Charmin's for the visitors' side -- oh, say 'bout 6 O'Clock. Those institutionally abrasive, thick stock paper towels just won't do. 150-sheet boxes per ticket oughta do the trick. Only the best for the former 4A state champs!!! Hillsboro 17 MHS 13
  19. Who's practicing at UT? Is it Fulton or M-ville?
  20. Gotta love the way fellow-MBA alums come to the guy's defense. Over at Hillsboro many of us would have to wait till our 20-year reunion to get that treatment.
  21. plus, if you buy 'em at your respective school this week, the school gets to keep $5 from each ticket sale.
  22. indoor facility this week. Yes, their uni's look like the Packers but they aren't said NFL team from the cheese state. We keep it on the local school level, folks.
  23. well, that's just it: they aren't as good as Hillsboro or Maryville.
  24. "The Rebels are a very dangerous team. I mean, they can get to you in so many ways. When you think their hemmed in one way there they go to finding another seam to bust out. A reigning champion is gonna limit their mistakes and pretty much dictate momentum so we can't count on any of that helping. If we can keep the chains moving, well...maybe we have a chance. I dunno. And that kid they have, what's his name? Jimmy Stewart? Anyway, he'll keep our defense busier than a one-legged a.. kicker." [Edited by KP9481 on 12-5-02 10:16A]
