  1. Hey Advocate, Thanks for the info. The one I remember most is 1965 or 1966 (whichever was played at Greenbrier) when my brother was in WHHS. We went to the game and as we were leaving, in the parking lot a hammer came flying by, grazed my brother's head and broke the glass on a car. I don't remember which team won, but SOMEBODY didn't like it. I am sure glad the rivalry doesn't seem as blood thirsty anymore. As it has been said, these are two class programs in a chess match of sorts. The outcome will all depend on who makes the mistakes and who doesn't. And by the way, don't get your hopes up about new bleachers. They are part of the memorabilia. Do you have the coaches for WHHS and their years? I remember Vradenburg, Collins and Davis but like I said, the memory is going.
  2. Hmmm. You know, you're right. These players haven't been in high school more than four years at the most. If we older folk weren't reminding them of the streak, it probably wouldn't come to mind and it would be less pressure. I guess it's just us older guys that are "reliving" all those frustrating football games gone by that make such a big deal of this. Good Luck to both teams...with so little distance between the two towns there definitely will be a packed house. Now would be a good time for Greenbrier to charge for parking so you can build extra bleachers for all us Blue Devil fans
  3. Don't you mean Greenbrier led the series before the 1981 season? I remember back in my days at WHHS before the streak began, playing Greenbrier was THE game that we were fired up for. Seems like I don't remember many years that that White House came out on the winning end. Course my memory is getting old, but I don't think we ever played Springfield or Portland in my high school years. I do remember playing teams like Celina, Watertown, Dyersburg, Westmoreland and East Robertson. Back in the days of Carey Lafferty, David Sherrill and John Hall to name a few.
  4. My mama has always told me all good things must come to an end. I've seen both teams play this year. If the Devils don't tighten up this might be the year.
  5. I've been to many, many football games in my life, but for the first time ever, when I went to see Beech and Greenbrier play Friday night, I was charged to park in a regular little parking lot, for a non-region high school football game. Now maybe I could understand this if I were parking next to the bleachers or for a playooff game....but for a game that doesn't even "count" on either teams region play? Several of the fans were talking about it in the bleachers (said they'd never been charged a fee ANYWHERE). Not that I couldn't afford your fee, BUT what was the deal, Beech? Does any other school charge for parking?
  6. They went home at halftime.
  7. May not have time to get to Sycamore to watch WH Friday night, but if not, may scoot down the hill to check out the Beech and Greenbrier action... How bout it??? What's your prediction?
  8. Although their stadium needs some money from the county budget thrown their way, Greenbrier's fans have stuck with their school teams and are in the building process of a strong team. I enjoy playing them at home or at their house, because it's kinda like a backyard game with your next door neighbor on Saturday afternoon. Funny how in my younger years I thought life ended at the White House city limits, but in my adult years I've found many good friends in Greenbrier that have Bobcat players, or students. It's been interesting to watch those kids grow and become better and better through the years. One day they might even break our streak
  9. Tonight's the night! Greenbrier and WH are going to "Rock the Ridge!" GO GREEN! GO BLUE!
  10. Heard that John was at the WH-Greenbrier game but I missed him in all the crowd. (Also heard he's in TX now and I think he has like 5 kids and they're expecting the 6th.) Sure would be good to see him...we were friends back in "those days". You know..when the only sports at WHHS were Football and Basketball, the four HS grades could fit into the Civic Center, the Jr. High classes were ALL in the renovated Police Department, and according my kids dinosaurs roamed
  11. Great article! The Bobcats appear to be up and coming. As I've said before, I believe they have a great team this year and will go finally get that monkey off their back. I expect to see them surpass Round 1. I predict Greenbrier will win against Lexington. Good luck, Cats. [Edited by WHHS1975 on 11-7-02 11:15A]
  12. Having seen Greenbrier play, I know they have great potential. I give them the edge in this game cause I don't believe they're done yet. Here's a link I found to give Greenbrier a little "head's up". http://miva.jacksonsun.com/miva/cgi-bin/mi...200211024321514 Go get em, Bobcats.
  13. You are welcome, Coachhard. I only tell it like I see it and I see Greenbrier as being more like the White House school of my days, a small school that had to fight for respect that was well-deserved. I remember the days when Greenbrier and White House rooting for each other was simply unthinkable, but nowadays, I have a couple of friends who have preferred to send their kids to Greenbrier instead of White House to keep that smaller school atmosphere. After speaking to a friend's child (that had gone to WHMS), she has never been happier at school than she is at Greenbrier. The parent, and old WH alumni has mentioned the "close-knit" feeling that Hoosierdaddy spoke of too. I do wish your team well. Hope you all take a big win over Giles Co.
  14. Please keep all of us updated! Get well soon Adam! Hang in there! You can do it!
  15. Goodluck, Bobcats. I believe you've got a team that is becoming a tough adversary. I also believe you've got what it takes to be a factor in the 3AAA playoffs. I am friends with several Bobcat parents and they're certainly proud of what you've all accomplished. I wish your team and school the best!
  16. Yeah, I would like to know too. A WHHS sophomore that I was talking to told me that some older players were benched due to several going out to eat at a restaurant and walking out without paying the check. Possibly someone had a jersey on or some WH logo because according to what I heard they got caught. Has anyone heard if this is true? ------------------------------------------------------------ Yes, this was true. I understand that they did not receive separate checks. Only one check with all the meals listed. Understand players asked for checks to be separated for payment but request didn't happen. So a couple of players decided to leave and rest of players didn't have enough money to pay the bill. I believe a few players did pay but I don't know how many or if they did have separate checks. The rest then decided to leave. This is the version I heard. I don't know if this version is completely true. I have to admit I was disappointed in our kids because this is the 2nd incident (first resulting in 2 dismissals)this year. I know boys will be boys but someone in that group of older kids should have stepped up and made a good decision. May I also add I am proud of our coaching staff and their decision. Many programs would overlook this with such an important game to play. And again, congratulations to the younger kids who stepped up. Blue Devil football looks to be good for several years to come. I'll admit I was worried this game. Stratford was not that bad and we had sophomores all over the field! Matter of fact, not only did they step up, but if I was one of those replaced for the Stratford game, I'd make sure I had a REALLY REALLY good, no great week of practice. You could find it permanent. ________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________ I haven't heard the names of these White House boys, (and don't want to) but I'm sure many people have. If any of them read this, I hope they will remember that even though they may think of this as "one of the stupid things that teenagers do", a black mark on someone's name, whether it is a player, student, coach or school only undermines what has taken YEARS to get. Respect is hard earned, but easily lost. When one of them (or us) wears something with our school name on it, we are a reflection to everyone we meet. Hopefully, these benched boys will be realize that proving themselves on the football field may take a little extra work because the younger boys did the job, but regaining respect of teachers and coaches may be a little harder. I do, however, commend the boys who did pay their part. This is a big reflection on morals. [Edited by WHHS1975 on 10-21-02 3:42P]
  17. Maybe it doesn't matter in the aspect of the score, but it matters when any team thinks they can do something of this nature, even White House. I think with these boys being a winning team, they should raise the bar. This definitely didn't do it. I admire the coach to have the foresight to make these boys, most seniors from what I heard, sit the bench on Homecoming game instead of giving in to the pressures of parents or fans. Hopefully, this will be a life long lesson to these boys and they will never walk out out of a restaurant without paying the bill again.
