  1. I'm curious how other players from around the state are faring at the next level. 2003 H.S. graduates from the Memphis area are playing at several Universities and are having amazing success. Brooke Binswanger (Hutchison '03), last year's state scoring leader has played significant time, starting in one game, for the University of Richmond (a sweet sixteen NCAA tourny team last year) and has scored one goal in four outings. Ashley Ferree (Cordova '03) leads #21 ranked Ole Miss with 4 goals and two assists and has played 275 minutes in 6 games for the 6-0 Rebels. Emily Brown (Germantown '03) has two goals and one assist in 251 minutes in 6 games for Ole Miss. Samantha Gould (Briarcrest '03) has one assist in 76 minutes in 6 Ole Miss games. Heidi Ondra (Houston '03) has three goals in six games for the 4-1-1 Mississippi St. bulldogs. Megan Rooker (Germantown '03) started in the last outing for the University of Memphis as the tigers try to improve upon a 2-3-2 start. Katie Forbis (White Station '03) has started in goal for the past two games in leading U.A.B. (6-2) to consecutive victories. Lindsay Talley (Houston '03) has one goal in four starts for 3-1 Appalachian St. Madeline Bobo (Ridgeway '03) has played in 3 games for 5-3 Coastal Carolina. Lacey Rush (Houston '03) is awaiting her first action for 4-0-1 University of San Diego, a NCAA Tourny team last year. Allie Etter (Evangelical Christian '03) awaiting her first action for Ole Miss
  2. 3 seconds off She ran a 2:12 and the state record is 2:09 in the 800
  3. Here's a link to the Decathlon (and Pentathlon) scoring tables. http://www.btcs.org/ths/track/State_trk/State_Dec.html
  4. Elizabeth Krausnick of Hutchison ran a 2:19.17 last week against Germantown and Cordova. She's just beginning to figure out how to run the race and we expect her to be 2:16 or 2:17 by state.
  5. Liza Wellford of Hutchison placed second in the state D2 300 meter hurdles as an 8th grader last year with a 46.38. That time would have won A-AA and placed sixth in AAA. Elizabeth Krausnick, also of Hutchison, competed in the state 800 as an eighth grader in 2002. Though her state time wasn't great, she had PR'ed with a 2:24.8 two weeks before.
  6. TheAnswer - I agree, but it shows just how tremendous she is that she can almost singlehandedly carry her team like she does. Sevier Co. did as good a job as any team has in shutting her down and she still scored in the 30's! Watching her play, I found myself laughing to myself and slapping the backs of anyone near saying, "can you believe that," and "oh my god!" over and over again. Don't get me wrong, I think some other players that I've seen have been great too (i.e. Kendall Cavin) but not jaw dropping like Ashley. She wasn't on the best team, but from what I saw she was hands down the best player. [Edited by brownhut on 3-15-03 9:12P]
  7. Ashley Shields - the best player to play this week
  8. Glaring omissions from the top 20 (and why!) ECS - beat (#17)McNairy Central by 5; beat a very good Father Ryan team handily; has beaten Briarcrest 3 times this year so far; 3 pt. loss to Bolton; beat (co-#20) USJ by 20! Briarcrest - loss to (#5)Chester Co. by 10; beat AA state quarterfinalist Livingston Academy by 9; loss to (#13) Rigdeway by 2 (with a healthy Jessica Jackson for Ridgeway); two good wins at the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach; beat (#15)Bolton by 1; 3 close losses to ECS bad loss to Houston in early Dec. Craigmont - 2-1 vs. (#6) Melrose; losses by 9 and 7 to (#3)East; beat (#18) Mem Northside by 7 and 16 before tourny loss by 4; ended season poorly Here's my OPINION! 1.Mem East 2.Gibson Co. 3.Melrose/Westview - I saw them both on Sat. and both were amazing! 5.Chester 6.Jax N-side 7.houston 8. trenton 9. dyersburg 10. bolton (beat Brighton and ECS) 11. ECS 12. brighton 13. briarcrest 14. crockett co (too many so so losses along with good losses; 2 good wins - Brighton and Obion) 15. obion co 16. craigmont 17. ridgeway (w/o Jessica Jackson) 18. humboldt 19. huntington 20. mcnairy co
  9. I want to end the West Tn vs. shelby Co. battle . . . until next year. It's time to pull together against the middle and east. I want all the champs to be from this side of the TN river!!!!!!
  10. thanks for asking. I don't know anything about her situation. I'm not a Ridgeway community member; I just try to attend games when I can. As you saw at the Coliseum with the number of R-way fans at the game, city schools sometimes don't get the suppot that smaller towns do. I've lived in several big cities, L.A., D.C., Memphis, and it's the same in every larger community. I think there is just too much competition for time and dollars to get the type of support that y'all get. Keep supporting your girls! [Edited by brownhut on 3-10-03 10:48A]
  11. Yes, Westview is good. You beat the ninth best team in Shelby county without their best player, good job!!!!!! Seriously though, I thought your motion offense looked great. Defensively, I thought you gave up too many easy shots (which were missed early on). I was shocked that the freshman pressure by Ridgeway caused so many turnovers in the second half. But you did a great job regrouping after R-way brought it back to 44-40. Good Luck this week!
  12. FRHSRULES, Good luck tonight against SBEC. Let me know how the game goes and what you thing of Gorman and Barbie. SBEC dresses only 8, I believe, and they are all 10th and 11th graders. Their post play has improved over the course of the season, but their guards are TOUGH. They're both 5'4" and scrappy. Though you should win (easily, I suspect) I HAVE to root for the tiny school located on the Mississippi side to the Tennessee/Mississippi border. A win for them would be of the "Hoosiers" variety. Go Trojans!!!!
  13. I get to see TWO for one. Melrose vs. Dyersburg Ridgeway vs. Westview
  14. Memphis is the capital on North MS, West TN, and Eastern AR combined. Come to Mecca, baby! Leave your prejudices behind!
  15. Ha! I think you've got yourself covered. Call for a reservation at Jack Binion's Steakhouse in the Horseshoe. It's supposed to be great. I've never been, unfortunately.
  16. the west region had 14 teams in the tourny which is comparable to the size of most regions in the state in other classifications When the publics finally kick out all the privates, the division across the state will finally look good size wise. I can't wait to see the ECS-HH semis! FRHS-Briarcrest won't be bad either.
  17. Too bad, there are some great bands playing at the Hi-tone on Poplar, on Highland by the U of M, and on Beale tonight. Seriously, if you need any recomendations for great restaurants with cool atmospheres that aren't chains or anything else, just let me know.
  18. My bad, so they will get the home court advantage that they earned. I thought the city championships were at the Pyramid. I stand corrected. Go Roadrunners! Send the Kentuckians back home!
  19. Are you preparing excuses already for if you get beat? Both teams will play in the same gym, lighting will be the same for both. Ridgeway hasn't played there this year that I know of. If you do win it will be good prep for the large coliseum environment of the state tournament. Good luck to your team.
  20. I got the feeling while watching Shields for the very first time against Collierville that she was determined to let the other players on her team score and be more involved in the flow. When she decided to drive, she did so at will and left the Collierville double and triple teams looking silly. It looked as though she went into the game not giving Collierville a chance and lucky for her they didn't. I kept thinking to myself that she was obviously not at her best but was still AWESOME!
  21. As a completely non-partisan observer of the game, i didn;t think that Houston's play should be considered dirty in any way. Yes, the fouls were awkward looking, but this was because the East girls were so fast and usually almost completely by the defenders before the foul had a chance to take place! Seeing both teams for the first time, I was so impressed with Houston's ball movement and skills. I knew from the beginning that it was a shame for one of the teams to have to go home, but that was Houston's fault for not taking care of Kirby in districts. When East turned up the "D" . . . whew! As for East holding the ball, that was Houston's choice to control by either switching to man (not really an option) or extending the zone (which they soon did). Great game!
  22. Houston came out smoothly running their offense going up by as much as 7 in the first and early into the second quarter, then East started being aggressive on defense. I looked up and saw Houston leading 21-14. I look up after East's run and it was East 34 - Houston 21. Houston never got close again. With one minute left in the third and East up by 22, Houston started fouling to put East on the line. it didn't work. East remained up from between 19 and 25 the rest of the way until Houston scored at the end with East's subs in. On Houston's behalf, they looked a bit sluggish after their quadruple overtime victory over Northside yesterday afternoon, but tonight the more talented team won. Congratulations Houston on a great season.
  23. i was there for the first half and saw no ball holding. Did they hold it in the OT's?
