  1. According to the Knoxville paper, East Tennessee PBS will air replays of the championships of soccer, track, and baseball this weekend..... BUT NOT SOFTBALL!!! Before someone says that no teams in their coverage area (Knoxville & Tri-Cities) made the finals, you could say the same for Class A and AA baseball and all of the soccer matches except for Class AAA.... yet they are showing those games. Wonder who I could complain to at the TSSAA about this.
  2. And apprently with a new coach as well.... Roach resigns from Grainger
  3. It's a violation in college as well. I saw it happen the other night.
  4. There are a lot of kids in the Harrogate area who go to Middlesboro, Bell County, private church schools or (don't know why) even the J. Frank White Academy. A lot of the ones crossing the state line are athletes. Some Tazewell kids go to Kentucky schools too. A sizable chunk of the Harrogate-Shawanee population are people from Middlesboro/Bell County who moved to Tennessee to avoid state income taxes yet do all their shopping in Kentucky and send their kids to school there. Heck, I know of at least 5 who use grandparents or other relatives addresses to avoid paying out-of-district/state fees at Middlesboro. There is a player from Harrogate on Louisville's basketball squad but I guarantee that outside of Claiborne County no one in Tennessee has heard of him. Yet he is top 10 in all-time three pointers in Kentucky high school history. Imagine how good Cumberland Gap would be if they could keep all the kids in-state.

  7. I agree with you there. And the nasty millisecond away from being a late hit on Helton on the sideline as well. But I've seen officials swallow their whistles on worse plays..... and you should have seen the Bell-Ft. Thomas Highlands game played at Bell last year. The last team I saw get hosed on their home field that bad was that UT game when Florida had "that touchdown on the goal line". You know the one.... It was scheduled for 8:30 and would have started on time except for Middlesboro's lack of conditioning causing a five minute delay after every play because of a cramp. Middlesboro also seemed to call a LOT of extra timeouts as well. They charged the press for their hospitality press pass as well. The funny thing is that the local radio got free drinks anyway and the one I was with didn't even buy a pass. Did they charge to park? Bell never has in the past. And just to let people know... I am a Central grad. I just work in the area and the radio play-by-play guy asks me to help out occasionally. I even wore a Central shirt to the game.
  8. I didn't say WHICH team did the interference. Actually, from the press box (which is where I was) it looked like the call could have gone either way. They were both going for the ball, and in the hundred or so Kentucky HS games I have seen they will ALWAYS give the offense the benefit of the doubt in that case. I'm not saying it was the right call, but it is consistent with the style of officiating up there. You want to see home cooking wait until they face Middlesboro in the City/County Bowl next year on Middlesboro's field.
  9. What home cooking? I thought it was one of the better officiated games I've seen. You want home cooking look at the game before this one (Middlesboro vs. Whitley County).... that last Middlesboro touchdown was some serious home cooking. Central was penalized 10 times for 70 yards (Bell was 3 times for 15 yards). Penalties by drive 1st quarter (4 penalties) False start and holding --- Central scored a TD Offside by defense --- Bell fumbled Holding --- Central FG 2nd quarter (3 penalties) Unsportsmanlike conduct (didn't see what this one was for) and holding --- Central scored a TD Pass interference (pretty obvious) --- Bell touchdown 3rd quarter (3 penalties) Offsides by defense --- Bell turnover on downs Holding and false start --- Central punts 4th quarter (0 penalties) If I was Coach Helton I'd be more worried about the holes in the defense that Bell was able to take advantage of in the second half. Bell had the ball for 10 minutes in the third quarter. Time of possesion 1st half --- Central - 14:41, Bell - 9:19 2nd half --- Central - 7:03, Bell - 16:57 Total --- Central - 21:44, Bell - 26:16
  10. Cumberland Gap is a hard team to read from year to year because a lot of the good players who should be going there end up at Middlesboro or Bell County instead. It's not as big of a problem as it was when they were Powell Valley High School but it still happens a lot.
  11. One of the most heated rivalries that used to be around was Knox Central vs. Knoxville. People still talk about that one.
  12. Heck, they SHOULD have been playing for the title (which they would have probably won) but Highlands played the ineligible player. This game should be good. It will be like watching last year's USC team (Central) playing the "old school" Notre Dame (Bell) where you have one team that relies on big plays and one that will nickel and dime you to death with a nine minute drive.
  13. It is 36, I believe. However, the South Atlantic Conference has limits on top of that that make the total a LOT less. The schools make up for it by giving out a lot of "institutional" aid.
  14. Clinch's gym is way smaller than Forge Ridge's. The gym at Clinch isn't even regulation length and at most you can fit 100 people in there... including both teams. Kind of like the old gym at Tusculum used to be.... The gym at Clinch is at least 60 years old, my mom played there when she was in school there in the 1940's and she said the only real change since she was there is the scoreboard. I will say this... the new gym at Cumberland Gap is nice. So is the gym at Claiborne as well, even if they are exactly the same.
  15. Jamie Jackson from Gallatin High has signed with LMU.
