  1. Thanks for posting, I was actually just wondering when the show came on tonight.
  2. I'll second that. With FR, McC, & SD there, it was top-heavy. But there were good kids from all over. The upsets illustrate that. Everybody who showed up got some good tough wrestling in that will be a great tune-up for the upcoming post-season.
  3. Oh , and Irishdad, thanks for the update on Taylor. I didnt see it until today. I'll be glad to help anyone with questions as much as I can.
  4. I can help with directions for out of town folks. It's actually easy to find. You Middle Tennessee folks will of course be coming down I24. About 1 mile after 24 winds around the river, just outside of downtown Chatt, you need to be in the right hand lane to get on 27 North (Downtow Chatt exit). IF you keep going you'll swing around the city and hit I75, so dont do that. You'll stay on 27 North (aka Corridor J) for about 15 miles. After you cross the river, the exits will be something like, whitehall rd / Signal Mtn / Morrison Springs Rd/ Mtn Creek/ Hwy 153 (chickamauga dam) / Thrasher pike / dont remember name of rd / Sequoya Access Rd (SD HIgh School--there should be signs.) This is your exit. Don't go left at the stop sign, that takes you to the school. Go right instead. After about 3/4 of a mile, at the intersection, you want to take a right. The Wrestling Arena is about 2 miles ahead on your right. You won't be able to miss it. It sits on a hill and should be visible from the road, and there will be signs I imagine.
  5. Blackman Brentwood Northeast Cookeville Dickson Co. Fort Campbell, KY Halls Hixson LFO, GA McCAllie McMinn Co. Mt. Juliet Red Bank Rossview Seymour Springfield Tullahoma Warren Co. Hey IrishDad, can you tell me aything about one of the Father Ryan kids, Taylor Walsh? Is he getting to wrestle any this year with the varsity? Taylor is my wife's cousin and I was wondering how he was doing.
  6. Papabear3, In the late 80's, it was called The White's Creek Inv. I guess West was coaching there at the time. I remember CBHS being there in 87 when we were there.
  7. I haven't been able to find out the results past the quarterfinals. They (SD) got 5 to the semis (James, Fuller, Lane, Campbell and either Potter or Henderson) if I remember correctly and had about 3 other kids make it to the 4th round of consolations. There hasn't been an update posted on that site yet.
  8. Not to cut in on RMC's action, but have you looked online? I was looking for a used mat for my wife's elementary school last year. http://www.pinnaclemats.com/]These guys[/url] had some used mats. You could also try Resilte's web site, I think they have used mats there too.
  9. I couldn't agree more. When I was in school in the mid 80's, it was like that. It will always be that way for me, because that is what my coach (Steve Henry) taught me. When we were out of town at a tournament, often I would find myself rooting for a kid from Baylor, McCallie, or even most hated Red Bank or Hixson(both of whom we never defeated while I was in school). I even helped scout a Memphis team at a tournament in order to help out a Chattanooga team that expected to see a lot of that team at the State. They did, and they won. I was happy to offer even a small amount of help towards that cause. To me, that kind of thing was no different than shaking hands with a guy after a match--it was just what you did, what was expected of you. I miss those old region wars at Notre Dame. If you could somehow scratch and claw your way to a place in that tournament, you knew you had a shot a State medal because it was so tough. Ahhh the good old days.
  10. Coach Try Brian Parker @ either 931-456-4014 or 931-261-2443
  11. Coach I have a friend who I belive knows one of the coaches up there pretty well. I just put a call into my buddy, and I will post here if I can get a phone number for you.
  12. Soddy-Daisy seems to be fairing pretty well at this tournament according to what I could piece together http://www.wrestlingreport.com/2003_southm...liday_class.htm I couldn't find any team score information, but hopefully it will be up soon
  13. OMG I actually remember Reese. I think Howard finished 4th in the state that year. Talk about coming from out of nowhere! I think Michael Turner was also a champ for them that year.
  14. Marcus Coleman, from Soddy-Daisy, didn't have very much experience at all when he won the state--I believe it was 160lb. He just was a lot stronger and quicker than everyone else, and would take them down with a double or single and let them back up.
  15. " was there in Murfreesboro and knew that it was no longer a Cup Qualifier, but was still " corrected" by several parents. I tried to explain that things were different this year then, but obviously no one listend." Hey dont feel bad. I saw my friend the coach last night and he mistakingly believes one of his 8th graders made the team because he won at M'boro. I've seen the roster and he isnt on it. This just underscores what a lousy job the promoters of this thing do of communicating with the wrestling community, not to mention the lack of promotion of this "nation level" event.
  16. Walkenvol, I totally agree that the split season hurts hurts the sport at that level. Coach Hall at Hixson is one HCAC coach who also coaches HS (assistant, Hixson) but that wont be but for a few more years when Vandergriff hands over the keys to him full time. I cant think of anyone else in that situation. I can tell you all the Hixson Middle folks are not happy about having to be up all night scrambling to re-do the brackets, etc, at the last minute. Its par for the course with the HCAC from what I've seen since moving back here. My wife coaches soccer and I can say from experience this is not the first bone-headed decision coming from them.
  17. cmmndalum , This is obviously a touchy subject with me, the reason being I have a very good friend from high school do a lot of damage to himself doing some stupid things to make weight. I guess even 15 years later I still get mad because there wasn't an adult there to intervene for my friend. But in any case, if I read into your post things which were not implied by you, and it appears I have, then I apologize. Like I said, this is a touchy subject for me.
  18. Walkenvol, I agree with you, I just hate to see that in this day in age there still is the mentailty out there that glamorizes weight cutting as some kind of badge of courage. I wish we knew back in the 80's what they do now about nutrition and wellness. I guess the truth is that a lot of things were known then but ignored. I mean, when I think back to some of the things I saw kids do to try and cut a half pound of fluid out of their systems, its really disturbing. I hope things are different now for these kids. As for the matside weigh-in, I don't have a dog in the hunt, and like you, I hope the rules are being enforced. The thing is that you can't watch kids 24 hours a day and if they get it in their heads that cutting is a means to finding an edge some of them will do things behind your back, no matter how hard you preach to them. Maybee I'm overreacting because of my own experiences and I haven't been around the sport for a while. I hope so.
  19. Couldn't disagree more. Does taking a box of ex-lax the night before so you can crap out all of the water in your system and damage your intestines in the process make you a good wrestler? What about sleeping in a sauna wearing a rubber suit and ending up in an ice bath in the E.R.? Practices like those are NOT and NEVER HAVE BEEN "just as much a part of wrestling as the matcb itself." The fact that some do have this mentality unfortunately does give the sport a bad reputation within the public at large. It's time to step into the 21st century folks.
  20. I believe the open practice has been postponed until after track season due to a work conflict for Shane. You might want to have Schack or one of the other coaches give coach Henry a call during school to verify this, since others on here might be interested also.
  21. Good to hear Rabbit, tell your brother I said hey!
  22. I only know a little physics, but I agree with you about the eligiblity issue. I don't think the TSSAA can say anything if the event is not school sponsored.
  23. My neighbor is Hixson's coach and I almost choked on my sandwhich when he told me SDMS only had like 15 kids go out for wrestling. I guess it was true. I remember when I was in 8th grade they had around 50 kids. Hixson had almost that many this year, and I'm glad for coach Hall and his program, but the current situation just isn't going to cut it at SD. Hurry and get over there Shane, they need you. This is an old teammate btw, preston cox
  24. What it would probablly do is push Sodd-Daisy, Red bank, Cleveland and Bradley into one large-school district / region, with maybee Ooltewah being the only other Hamilton County school with high enough enrollment for the "Large School" classification. I don't think that's fair for any of those schools. I do like the idea of another class to give the smaller schools something to compete for though.
