  1. We're splitting hairs on this EHS starter issue - with most teams platooning, it's a moot point other than what level of (in)experience it stands for - but footballfan1111's interpetation of returning starters is more aligned with what was written in Murphy Fair's book, which is based on a questionnaire returned by the coaching staff. I'll check the numbers later tonight, but 14 starters returning was far higher than what EHS reported (the number may have been in high single digits; I just don't remember exactly). Anyway, the season can't get here quick enough. A few teams, and a handful of players across many teams, have some lofty tasks ahead of them to achieve the rock start status ordained in the preseason on these message boards. I can't wait to see how the season unfolds.
  2. What is the range of tuitions at the various schools? Years back, I did some research based on the Form 990s filed by certain private schools. These forms showed how much aid was given and to how many students (no academic/athletic designations, of course). When calculating the average aid grant to the tuition of the school, some families on aid were still paying $8K out of pocket for their kids to attend school. What's interesting about this is that a family could be paying half-freight ($8K) to attend one DII school, and the kid would have the dreaded "scholarship" label. However, the same family could pay $8K at another DII school, and that would be full-freight (tuiton) at that school, and thus the kid would not be on aid. Does a school that has a family that pays $8K towards tuition at a $15K school have an advantage over a school that has a family that pays $8K towards tuition at a $8K school? Food for thought...
  3. Yes, I know Ricky Bowers is the coach. And yes, I know the state’s top college prospect resides on EHS’s front lines. However, in the short history of the program, this is the biggest rebuilding season to date for EHS. A very serviceable quarterback/leader is being replaced, with the heir apparent having thrown only 22 passes over the past two years (and completing only 8). Of further uncertainty is the rushing game, which, as best as I can tell, is losing at least 92% of last year’s rushing yardage due to either graduation or season-ending injury. Do I think these factors preclude EHS from having a good season, or even a great one that ends in a title? No, of course not. But after reading comments like “nobody hanging with the big E†and EHS being one of two schools “run[ning] away with it this yearâ€, I am wondering from where these theories of utter dominance arise. Big holes may be opened by the big linemen, and the defense may be good enough to keep offensive scores needed for victory to a minimum, but this season represents the biggest question mark to date for the Tiger O, especially at the positions that hold the ball and score the points. In general, I can readily accept arguments of “rebuildingâ€, “reloadingâ€, “it’s the systemâ€, etc., as reasons for a good season, but there have to be a lot of breaks and fortuitous bounces for good teams to move to the dominant level. I just don’t see a dominant team anywhere in the league this year; many good ones, and enough good ones to fare well once again against the ever-non-believing DI schools, but no team at a level far above the field. We’ve seen three undefeated champs in a row in this league. I am not sure I see four in a row. Cogent, respectful replies welcome.
  4. Thanks. There is so much more info I have to upload but am short on time and manpower. But, this has been a good year of adding older scores - probably more noticeable for Middle Tennessee schools, but I am slowly starting to dig deeper into East Tennessee, and West Tennessee on a smaller scale. The goal is to have at least all playoff era scores (1969-Present) by this time next year, for all current and old/defunct schools across the state. Also, to my Trousdale County friends above, I haven't forgotten your e-mails; I just need some more time to sort things out and cross-reference some older newspapers to fill in those missing gaps in the older TCHS schedules.
  5. Maybe my hunches are distorted, but message board activity, or at least enthusiam, seems way down this summer as compared to past summers. I know these games are a year away, but I would have guessed this to be a very active thread, particularly given the lofty status of each program's place in the hierarchy of their respective states. Nevertheless, as OV said, St. X is big time in Kentucky. This will be a great matchup, with another W needing to be brought home to Tennessee from Bluegrass country.
  6. By my count, approximately 40 "disadvantaged" public schools have managed to hang somewhere between six to seven dozen losses on Goodpasture over the course of history. What is their secret? With a few exceptions here and there, the programs that complain the most about the Goodpastures of the world are the ones that aren't winning much anyway, even against fellow public schools. Programs like Alcoa and Milan (just 2 of roughly 18 public programs which have a .500+ winning percentage against Goodpasture) are the programs they are because, among other things, they don't get hung up on issues like this, don't make excuses, and just win, baby.
  7. If MUS is still in Tennessee, then there is a tremendous amount of doubt. I'd challenge anyone to show me any chinks in MUS's resume from the last two years. I'd also welcome any non-blusterous comparsions of MUS's resume (strength of schedule in particular) to any other team's resume. The thoughts above by no means diminish Alcoa's accomplishments in its class and in its division - very impressive to say the least. But, if we're going to make "across the state" comparisons, I'd be interested to see a cogent argument for a stronger "man" than MUS.
  8. Thanks for these scores. I just checked The Tennessean from 1997 and it does show the score of 25-21.
  9. Thanks. High school game scores are always a pain to confirm. They are rarely televised, and it is usually young kids calling in the scores to young journalists-to-be at the newspaper office, so the opportunity for error is large. As for 1997, I will correct, but the issue is now, was it a 5-point loss or a 4-point loss, as the 25-21 score above would indicate? As always, thanks for the help.
  10. Thanks. A current 28-11 series record also poses the issue regarding the 1985-1988 seasons. If the series has been played 39 times, that would imply one game per year from 1971-2009, and I just can't find the game being played from 1985-1988, unless it was in some sort of extra 11th game after the regular season. I do appreciate the input.
  11. Does anyone have access to all of the scores in this game's history? I am trying to reconcile a few items and am finding some conflicting information. The article below, written before the 2006 game, said that Daniel Boone held a 26-9 advantage in the series. I have found the following scores (disclaimer - I am using old Middle Tennessee papers, so East Tennessee scores are not as accurate/precise): http://www.timesnews.net/article.php?id=3689168+rel= 1971 DC 72, DB 0 1972 DB 30, DC 8 1973 DB 20, DC 7 1974 ? 1975 ? 1976 DB 20, DC 0 1977 DB W, DC L 1978 DC 33, DB 19 1979 DC 13, DB 0 1980 DB 13, DC 0 1981 ? 1982 DC W, DB L 1983 DC W, DB L 1984 DB W, DC L 1985 No game played? 1986 No game played? 1987 No game played? 1988 No game played? 1989 ? 1990 DB 35, DC 0 1991 DB W, DC L 1992 DB 18, DC 12 1993 DB 40, DC 0 1994 DB W, DC L 1995 DB 41, DC 6 1996 DC 27, DB 0 1997 DC 33, DB 21 1998 DB 45, DC 8 1999 DB 42, DC 14 2000 DC 27, DB 12 2001 DC 14, DB 7 2002 DC 41, DB 12 2003 DB 16, DC 0 2004 DB 18, DC 7 2005 DB 48, DC 7 Based on these results through 2005, I have DB at 17 wins and DC at 10 wins. There are four games I cannot find results for (1974, 1975, 1981, 1989). There are also four years (1985-1988) in which there doesn't appear to be a game played, although the 26-9 reference would imply games were played in those years (in 1987 and 1988, the Tennessean is showing Daniel Boone playing Brentwood Academy in the slots where David Crockett would normally be located). Any clarification and/or corrections of numbers above would be much appreciated.
  12. While Byrnes scrimmages Independence on a fairly regular basis, the two teams have never met in a regular season game.
  13. There is absolutely nothing in the article that can make one unequivocally say that there is an "admission of illegal scholarships before joining DII". JCS is entitled to give just as much aid as a DII school as it did as a DI school; the only difference is the athletic eligibility of those receiving aid. It is not "illegal" to give aid. The amount of aid given to students who are participating as athletes in DII this year could very well equal the amount of aid that left the school via graduation, transfers, etc. as a DI school last year, thus no change in the amount of aid provided. With no knowledge of the names of students receiving aid from year to year, any attempt to use this article as evidence of improprieties is spin, plain and simple. One has to dig much deeper than this article to make any valid allegations. And, since the TSSAA apparently is privy to this information that the general public is not, we can only trust that they did not see any improprieties.
  14. Uh, yes. I doubt there are many private schools in the state (Fayette Academy aside apparently), DI or DII, that do not give financial aid. The issue is DI students receiving aid and their eligibility to play sports. It is obvious you are trying to twist the story the way you want it to read, so have at it. I read the quote and it says to me, "Just because athletes on aid can play now that we are in DII doesn't mean we're throwing money around as we please."
  15. I believe you have Mooney confused with someone else. They have not played a Burns High School in NC (I think you may have meant Byrnes in SC, but they haven't played Byrnes either. Byrnes (SC) is 2-0 all-time against Ohio, beating Moeller in 2006 and Centerville in 2007).
  16. I think "a criterion" would be the correct usage if we're going to bring IQ into play.
  17. Got it; thanks. I also sent you an e-mail. I'll look at it over the course of the next few days and update the scores accordingly!
  18. Got it; thanks...I appreciate your help.
  19. While I agree with the premise (i.e., Kilbourne is , relatively, not an Ohio "power"), it's interesting seeing a Colerain mentioned as a Cincinnati/Ohio power and not a Moeller, or even a Princeton. I guess it all depends on what time period one considers. If we're talking the past decade, then Colerain falls in that category. If we're talking all-time, there is no way a Colerain would be mentioned before a Moeller or Princeton (one could even argue squeezing Elder out for those two). I'd venture to say the main thing Colerain, Elder, and X have over Moeller and Princeton is longevity, as Moeller and Princeton probably are not as old. My guess is Moeller's and Princeton's winning % and title appearances, relative to how long they have played, trump the other three. But, seeing that we're talking about current scheduling, then those three Cincy schools would certainly be strong ones. "Louisville Trinity"...they may have Ohio slightly figured out (I know they also handed Elder its only loss in '02), but one may say they have some work to do down here to knock us over.
  20. Thanks for the offer (and the feedback). One of the TCHS fans on here sent them to me about a month ago, and they can be found here by using the drop-down menu: http://www.hsfdatabase.com/tn_trousco2000.htm. If you know of any of the seasons where there are gaps/no scores, that would be great info to have. I am glad you use the site and hope you check back often. I am adding a few dozen to a few hundred scores per day, starting in Middle Tennessee and then moving East or West here and there. And I hope fans of any school will consider submitting scores they may have that are missing. There are a few schools even in the Top 15 (including #1) that don't have deep score histories to be found anywhere online from what I can tell. Thanks again for the feedback.
  21. There are strong rumors swirling around West End that, due to a myriad of athletic and academic setbacks during the 2009-2010 school year, the local all-male high school may be shuttering its doors at the close of this year. Apparently the "e"-ffect of recent new school development in West Nashville finally has had the debilitating impact it was supposed to have. A runner-up finish in football and titles in cross country, swimming, basketball, and tennis supposedly have left the Boys of Momma begging for mercy from the athletic gods (and who knows what morale will be like for supporters after track later this week). Add in having only the second most National Merit Semifinalists but the most Finalists in the state, and you have the proverbial perfect storm of events that have led the Board to say "no mas". Hey, it was a good 143-year run while it lasted. Sarcasm aside, I am getting the fever again. It should be another great, competitive season. With two, maybe three exceptions over 13 seasons, the winner of this league has been the one with the best quarterback. Perhaps that gives Baylor fans some hope, as they may have the best one on paper coming back, but now that they have the McCallie Streak monkey off their backs, they will have to work on getting past the Nashville schools, which were largely the difference between a good and great season for Baylor. Question - is Ensworth going to get a replacement game for the slot vacated by the North Carolina school (Tuscola, I think) that bailed on EHS last year? I assume the NC team will not be renewed after bailing last year. I'd love to see EHS snag a regional/national power needing a game. The state needs its strong programs to carry the torch for Tennessee HS football, and EHS has shown it is already equipped to hang with the strong. My pick for 2010? I'll have to wait and see for a couple of months. If rumors of the school closure over at "4001" prove to be true, then I'm going with MUS for the three-peat. Lord knows the area DII Nashville schools will be utterly diluted with an infusion of former underachieving Crimson & Silver student-athletes looking for a new home.
  22. The thread is about Division II-AA quarterbacks.
