  1. Congratulations Travis. I am looking for a stellar year out of you. See you at the clinic.
  2. McGavock usually has one in the spring for Bench and Power Clean. Call (615) 885-8850 and ask for Coach Larry Coffee. You can call Coach Gary Rankin at Riverdale at (615) 898-7836 (it is the AD #). Hope this helps.
  3. Big Poppa, give me the scoop on the Lavergne-Mt. Juliet game last night. My ears are still to the wall for you.
  4. Coachtut, what is the scuttle? After my last year's experience in coaching I really don't think anything would surprise me now. However, Metro has a way of surprising us all. Let me know what is going on since it could indirectly effect my future.
  5. Wasn't Wayne Bush the head coach at Mt. Juliet in the 70's?
  6. I am teaching at Hillwood. I am the assistant boys coach at East Literature. Give me a holler at HHS.
  7. Coach 763, Vic Varello graduated from Father Ryan. He was all-state in 1941. I still love ya', though. I saw that trophy at Maplewood. Keep up the trivia. By the way, was Central the other school that burned down? Also, they just tore down the old Meigs building a couple of weeks ago. I can't seem to find any reference to Donelson ever being called the tigers, either but since you roosted there for a little while.... [Edited by crazebear on 12-30-02 11:23A]
  8. They lost to Portland in a hall of fame game and to Whites Creek.
  9. Scrappy, Donelson, Two Rivers and Cameron all closed after 1971 and were consolidated into McGavock for the fall of '71. Each became a junior high and still operate that way. Litton also closed in 1971. Madison, Dupont, Goodlettsville and East closed after 1986. Hunters Lane was opened in the fall of '86 and took the GHS, Madison and the Old Hickory half of Dupont. East students went to Stratford and Maplewood. Cohn and Pearl High schools were consolidated into Pearl-Cohn after 1982. North and Joelton were joined after 1978 to make Whites Creek. As far as Tarbox, I would have to do a little research on that one.
  10. My biggest memory of those Maplewood teams is BIG (6'8" 310) Ronald Hale. He was surprisingly agile for a guy is size. Earnest Cecil was also a stud on that same team. Last I heard he was a metro policeman. I believe Coach Elrod arrived in 1973 after an 8-2 season at North with Jesse Mathers. he was the head coach at Donelson in '69 and '70. Isn't that right Coach763?
  11. Stan, MBA went undefeated in 1966--9-0-1 NIL Champs 1967--10-0 NIL and State Champs 1968--11-0 NIL and State Champs They went to the Clinic Bowl all three years 1966 beat Litton 21-0 1967 beat Stratford 20-0 1968 beat Gallatin 35-7 So I guess the answer to the question that started all this is yes, it has been done before although it is still an incredible accomplishment. To bighurt, I found this caption Nov.12, 1965; Donelson 28- Stratford 21--Victory clinched Big Nine crown and CLinic Bowl berth. After a scoreless first period, the Dons grabbed a 14-7 half-time lead and were on top 21-7 in the third before Stratford rallied to tie with 3:20 left to play. David Stewart passed in the flat to Steagald who raced 57 yards for the game-winner. Steagald had two touchdown catches of 45 and 57 yards and had a 99-yard kickoff return called back. Mike Jones, Stratford quarterback, later a defensive back at Tennessee, rushed for 152 yards on 27 carries. Donelson went on to beat Lebanon 28-0 in the '65 Clinic Bowl. Scrappy, Bellevue's best seasons were 1967/8-2 Crockett Bowl 1971/8-2-1 Lions Bowl 1972/7-3-1 Lions Bowl
  12. Austin Denney graduated in 1962. He was named all-city in all three sports (football, basketball, and baseball). He lead the football team to a bowl game ( I can't remember which one, but I will look it up), and the basketball and baseball teams to the state tournament. The '65 Dons went 10-1. I also stand corrected. They defeated Stratford during the regular season, not the Clinic Bowl. I believe they were coached by Jody Ellis. Mike Jones graduating in 1966 means he was the leader of the "65 Spartans during the fall of his senior year. Chuck Steagald, Kenny Johnson, Steve Burger, Jamie Jamison, John Lyons and Mike Bevans were just a few of the Dons in '65. I will try to see if I can find any more info for Stan.
  13. Stratford opened in '62 or '63. I believe Donelson beat them in the 1965 Clinic Bowl. Chuck Steagald led the Dons team that year. I believe Mike Jones was the star for Stratford.
  14. Stan, In the old days there was no state champion crowned in Tennessee football. Any "state "championship was purely mythical. You played ten games and then maybe a bowl. The clinic bowl was held on Thanksgiving I believe and would feature teams such as MBA, Ryan and Litton who were the powerhouses of the time. As more schools were opened in the Nashville area, the talent became more spread out. Don Harris, a referee who teaches at Whites Creek put out a magazine in the 70's called "NIL Magazine" that contained a pretty in-depth history of Nashville area football from the 40's to the 70's. I still have a copy from 1974. Perhaps he might have one left over somewhere. Let me know what you dig up.
  15. Fielding is usually not the problem. Changing hitting mechanics from slow to fast-pitch will not happen over-night. It takes a lot of repetitive practice to break the "hitch" habit. The level you play at could also hinder your change. Let's face it. If your schedule has Ezell, Beech, Hendersonville, Goodpasture, Coffee County, Dickson etc. you will have to perform at a much higher level than you would against lesser teams. I always tried to play the highest quality teams I could outside my district since it was so weak. The more advanced players get better playing those teams and your younger ones get some time against some of the easier district teams. Scheduling can play a big part in developing younger players in a sport that doesn't have much J.V. to speak of.
  16. Hayes is a junior. He played down in AAU.
  17. The game is tonight at East Literature.
  18. The TSSAA website has the record for most points scored by one team in one game, 197. It does not post an amount for both teams.

  20. Hume Fogg wins 63-58. Brandon Harriford scores 29 for Hume Fogg. Brandon Smith has 20 and David McMillan 18 for East. Hume Fogg led the whole game. East tied it midway through the 4th, but couldn't sustain the run. Congrats to Hume Fogg on the victory.
  21. Hoobastank, give me a call and let me know how it is going. Must have been ugly last night. Eddie, it was a Dr. at UMC, but I can't remember his name.
  22. Ask Celina. I believe they beat College Heights 2-0. Oh yeah. College Heights didn't come back on Saturday for that one.
  23. Josh had his left knee scoped on Nov. 30th. How long he is out depends on his rehab. Doc said 8 weeks which usually means 6 to an athlete. They always say longer than needed to cover themselves for liability. The surgery went well. The Dr. seemed very optimistic for his return this season. I know he will work hard to rehab and get back soon.
  24. I was told that they would continue to play in the old gym this year.
  25. Wilson Central only had one senior last year and he was a non-factor.
