  1. Grace Golden Eagles--- what magnet school eases entrance requirements for athletes? i'm not saying some don't, but i know at least two that don't and can't. i've heard this statement before, but never found out what magnet can do this.
  2. another thing you must consider is that schools have a limited number of softball scholarships and more often than not, scholarships are split between players. some schools do give a full ride to a pitcher or a catcher occasionally, but all the others must get the rest of the tuition from another source. this may be academics, lottery money, etc. now if a girl has really good grades and good test scores, she may get offers from other schools and that may not encompass softball. my daughter played with a girl last year and this girl attracted attention from some "smaller" schools for her softball skills. however, she won a full academic ride from a SEC school and chose to give up sports to pursue her educational goals. it goes back to -- what is the future for most girls after school? for the large majority, it is the business world, not the olympic team. and i guess it also depends on what your definition of major college is--rhodes from lipscomb and natalie brock from ezell have gone to ut in the last couple of years and danielle peroni from goodpasture will join them this fall; one of the wright girls from ezell is at alabama (or just graduated); camille harris from beech went to LSU and played in the college world series last year. kassie stanfill from beech and kristi cunningham from davidson academy are both going to louisville this fall. i don't know if lindsey cavarra of brentwood has decided yet, but i understand she has interest from some impressive academic schools. those are all pretty big schools in my mind.
  3. next year. you can check the tssaa website for the new districts, etc.
  4. it is a shame that so many of these girls have been hurt over their high school careers. most of them played middle school ball together and at that age, were absolutely awesome. when this group was in eighth grade, they played jessica mooney's team for the nashville middle school championship (jessica was in 7th grade at the time). that was one of the best games i have ever watched on the local level. i agree that 7-aa is a better basketball district, unfortunately for hume-fogg. this will all be different after this year, since hume-fogg will play in district 9, region 5. district 8-aa will be dca, goodpasture, greenbrier, portland, station camp and white house. this is for basketball and softball.
  5. just so you know, currently they play AA level sports as opposed to beech and hendersonville, which are AAA. therefore, their overall student population is lower, which is usually a good thing in the classroom. however, this is a RAPIDLY growing area, so by the time your little one gets to high school, they will probably be at about the same student population as the other two. they do have nice facilities and most of the girls that we know there like the school, teachers, etc. good luck.
  6. beech 2 soddy-daisy 1 chatham drives in the winning run in the seventh.

    7-AA MVP?

vanderbilt does not have softball. they "can't" build a place to play. they are really missing out, because they would not have to go very far to recruit a quality team. this state has produced some amazing talent over the past few years -- if you watched the SEC games on sundays during the spring, you could see lots of girls from tennessee. for example, camille harris from beech played in the title game this past weekend for LSU. many vandy supporters have encouraged, actively campaigned, even started petitions, etc. for softball, but to no avail. megan is awesome. the teams in her district wish her luck at UT and "whew", are glad she is graduating! seriously, i've watched her in many games this year when she put her team on her back and carried them -- she is pretty dangerous with a bat in her hand, too. i think they will represent our district well in South Haven, i mean, Memphis.
  8. dickson county in 10 innings. 1-0.
  9. who was on the all tournament team?
  10. they have bids to the regional. wilson central and beech are scheduled to play for the district championship this afternoon. the winner will play rossview and the runner-up will play at dickson county.
  11. does anyone know the results of the late games last night? (mlk v. station camp and portland v. springfield)
  12. dropball, this happened at the waverly tournament last night. no, dickson doesn't have a lock on vulgar fans. there are, unfortunately, vulgar fans at almost any tournament in which your team competes. i believe the post from zachsdad was an outpouring of frustration and anger -- none of it meant towards the team. however, i totally agree with his anger. there were d.c. fans, yelling at hfa outfielders last night, calling one particular player names i can't type on this family board. they don't know her, she doesn't know them. there was no need for this behavior and it was extremely inappropriate. i don't know what i would have said or how i would have played if i had been in her place. honestly, i probably would have said something inappropriate right back -- i don't know what, if anything, she said to those people during the game. it is an indictment of high school, middle school sports and even little league/junior pro/y-ball whatever that a 17 year old girl is referred to a terrible obscenity because she's not wearing the appropriate jersey. what's next, are there going to be umpire/fan fights in tennessee, as there have been in other states? or are we moving to a society where fans are banned from sporting events, because of brawls in the stands (which has also happened elsewhere in the U.S.)? i would hate for this to become the standard here -- my daughter has gained so much from sports -- a sense of teamwork, a strong work ethic and she is generally much more outgoing on the softball field than any other place in the world. these are all qualities that should help her in any career she might choose. i'm sorry that you are offended by zachsdad singling out a particular school, but those specific people -- that were cursing high school girls for playing a game they love -- should be shamed. and just so you know, 2-1 isn't a whipping in anyone's book.
  13. lauren is very good. i think she has signed with ut-martin, not belmont. she has also been playing 3rd some this year.

    8AA

in the last two nights, this district just got really interesting. hume-fogg beat greenbrier last night and lipscomb won over greenbrier tonight. the lipscomb-hfa game will have pretty high stakes and i'm sure the lady cats will have something to say at both of the rematches. the rest of the district is competitive every night also--everyone has improved. looking forward to some great softball over the next few weeks!
  15. hume-fogg beat greenbrier this afternoon by the score of 5-4. the catcher from greenbrier knocked one out in the second inning and later in the game, freshman taylor childress from hfa knocked a 2 run shot out. this was a great district game and the rematch is next week...
  16. jennifer mayer plays for the 14u nighthawks; riley mashburn did play for the younger nighthawks, but i think her team has gone to be part of the xplosion group. mayer is on the board at club k for her age group as the fastest--i think at 61. mayer will play at brentwood high, while i'm pretty sure mashburn will go to brentwood academy with her older sister.
  17. is rained out for the second consecutive day. where, oh where is the sun????
  18. middle tennessee (new school in dickson county), AA, not sure of the district number, pitcher is named caldwell (i think). good team and if the pitcher is on, look out. shortstop and second are both good players and hitters also.

    Hume-Fogg

allison manning is on the team. she didn't play last year, so her batting skills are a little rusty. but she is a very good fielder and has a great attitude.
  20. rocole98

    Hume-Fogg

they have a young team. starting lineup has 2 seniors, 2 juniors, 2 sophomores and 3 freshmen. they are 4-1 right now, but the greenbrier game on tuesday will certainly be a challenge.
  21. chelsa messinger (so.) set a strikeout record for gallatin today. 20 strikeouts in nine innings -- gallatin won on a leigh cunningham (fr.) single, driving in heather kendrick(so). 1-0 final score. good game in VERY cold weather. mt. juliet had bases loaded with no outs in the top of the ninth, but couldn't get a runner home. their pitcher did a nice job also. good luck to both of these teams this year.

    9-AAA

yes, slagle gave up school softball. she is planning on playing travel this summer.
  23. yes, it is fastpitch--i put this on the softball board, but it was moved (quite rightly) to this board. i do wish more people realized that travel softball info should be over here. this is also posted at the eteamz site for tournaments.
  24. i watched them against brentwood academy at the beech play day. chelsea goodwin pitched a nice game and the team was hitting nicely. i didn't recognize the b.a. pitcher. if cunningham or goodwin gets injured, they will be in trouble, due to their low numbers--but otherwise, they looked good. they've got 2 or 3 freshmen playing regularly.
  25. an 8th grader can play on the high school team if the middle school and high school are in the same campus/building. davidson academy had some eighth graders last year that played. baillie lott played at fra last year as an 8th grader and is sitting out this year, because she transferred to brentwood. east literature magnet girls can play as 8th graders also. those are some examples i know of--hope this helps.
