  1. Thanks for being a good fan and giving those updates. Good season Lions proud of your work, effort and how you've all grown up. Seniors, you will be missed but new chapters in your lives will be opened. Congrats on a great season. Good luck to Maplewood.
  2. Boski, time? quarter? score? please keep updated thanks so much so far, good descriptions. Last week same thing happened to us versus Page in first half.
  3. Boski, what is Maplewoods past state titles? Play-off appearances? I know Maplewood has a very strong tradition of football and winning, very impressive program.
  4. Red Bank moving the ball? How are they defending the rush? Has it been big plays for both teams/
  5. Boski, I'm the Lions Head Boy's Basketball coach and was unable to make the trip to Maplewood due to writing a paper for my doctorate. Can you keep posting updates, since I am unable to find any accurate updates or current ones? I would greatly appreciate it. jpc3eds
  6. Red Bank High School in Chattanooga, TN is hosting HOF games and needs one boy's and one girl's team. If interested contact Coach Cherne at cherne_john@hcde.org
  7. Let me respond to the shorts thing. I am the coach at Red Bank and about two months ago, my father passed away suddenly. I came back after burying him on January 31, 2009 and dressed up for a game against McCallie in a tie and one of his shirts. then it hit me that in today's society of information and instant gratification, it is becoming increaslingly difficult to teach and do the right thing due to criticism and overly active fans. So, that Thursday versus Ooltewah, I made a decision NOT to wear a black band, or get a tatoo (as some kids do now a days to honor a deceased family member), however, i wore shorts. My father wore a suit for all of his 42 years of service to the airline business and always wanted to wear shorts. So, in honor of my father, despite criticism from fans such as you, I chose to do the right thing and teach my kids that doing the right thing is difficult at times. I have received more support for this jester than criticism, however, my players responded with a second year in a row run at the AAA state tournament. We have been fortunate to be here this year and as a program wish fans as yourself research your information a bit more before criticising others about things you have little insight on. SHould you want to discuss this with me call me at the school. Extension 2140 would love to get your input on the state of high school sports and sights such as these. Respectfully John Cherne III, EdS Red Bank HS Head Coach
  8. Yes, I was absent from the game against Ooltewah and Chattanooga Central, but since my father's passing away three weeks ago, we have played 7 games and hosted two weekends worth of freshman basketball tournament games and now a district tournament. It was my youngest sons birthday and we have spent zero time together and he has been having a rough time with the passing of his grandfather. So, yes, I was absent for my youngest sons birthday February 18th /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> and am very proud of him, because he wanted me to be at the game NOT with him. However, my coaching staff was there watching and taking notes. Please do not jump to conclusions before you post. Some respect and compassion needs to be demonstrated in columns such as this one, Soddy Daisy did a great job of competing and getting the win. Good luck to ALL District 6-AAA teams in the post season. Professionally, Coach Cherne III, Ed.S.
  9. Ooltewah versus Red Bank rescheduled for January 27th at Ooltewah.
  10. Dribble Drive Motion or Attack Attack Skip Attack Attack was created by Walburg in order to recruit players at a JUCO level of play. He went to Pepperdine and they struggled until he stepped down for personal reasons. High School coaches and college coahes are adopting this sylte of offense due to it's easiness to teach, blood drills at developing the skills needed for this unconventional offense, and AAU mentality (practice once or twice and let's go play). To be honest it is great for the kids of today, they want to play, and for high school coaches it requires more than 5-7 players on a bench. Which in turn makes mommies and daddies happy, cause my kid is playing. The true Walburg system requires very unconventional pressing and dribble attacking, Lee College has even altered it one step further and has had success with it. The original post asked how to do it, who is it for, and how to stop it. Football is going through the same thing with the spread offense. Student/athletes of today just want to play and there is more parity among college top 25 than ever before due to the "I want to play NOW," mentality developed by AAU basketball. The solution lies with better athletes and more fundamentally sound teams which execute THEIR system, out rebounding, scoring, and forcing turnovers. Check out the teams that implement this and you will find that their coaches ARE inventive in regards to being willing to take unconventional ideas and implement them with 15-17 year olds. Basketball allows any team on any night to beat another team. Great ideas for the kids of today, the generation that wants it NOW! All the teams mentioned are fun to watch, check out Walker Valley scores from this week 173 points in two games, WOW, alot of offense for 32 minutes of play. .0451 points per second or 2.7 points per minute, that IS amazing regardless of who is playing, but where is the defense? Oh yeah, we only report the offense in box scores. Take a deeper look at where we are as a society, the game is a direct reflection of what we truely want, satisfiaction. America wants to win at ALL costs, and this is difficult to prepare for and defend, no room for error. Great post though, good luck to the teams this year running this offense. Coach to the level of your talent and find something that works (creates wins).
  11. Austin-East and Fulton coaches are back, correct? What about the rest of the staff at each school respectively? Thought there was a hiring freeze due to budget cuts and re-shuffling of staff within Knox County Schools. Is it not a bit late to be hiring for a position at this time? School pretty much begins in the next three to four weeks, no one on staff at Knox West that applied for this position? Kinda difficult to prepare a team for a season where there is SO SO much competition and tradition in Oak Ridge, Bearden, Dobyn-Bennett, etc. . . very rough district and region considering West has struggled the past few years and hiring so late. Just wondering who would get this move this late, any front runners?
  12. Gate opens at 6:00pm Est. TIm Benford had surgery second round of football playoffs on right elbow. Seven screws and a plate. Sleeve is holding protective pad on arm, interesting you say Iverson. Iverson is selfish, not Benford. Seven assists last game with 8 boards. McDuffie only player to hit double digits in game versus Oakland year ago at this time. Should be exciting game. Both teams have to play well and ball fall right in order for one to advance. At this time of year, do teams not need roles players, and great team performances to advance? Games are more fun with fans who understand what is going on. Good luck to both teams may the best won win.
  13. Can someone or coacht make a link that lists all factual coaching vacancies in all of Tennessee/Georgia? Known Vacancies Soddy Daisy HS Ooltewah HS Ringgold HS, GA Morrisontown East Morrisontown West
  14. Parents are not the problem all unto themselves. Our society is set up to allow the average Joe an affordable opprotunity to taste what coaching is about. With this said, it does not just stop there, TV; specifically ESPN-ism (dah-nah-nah, pause, dah-nah-nah), has given individuals tools to criticise without recourse. Every aspect of professional and college basketball games is analyzed then overanalyzed by professional annoucers, bloggers, call in radio shows, and sites such as this. In which, carries over into daily games and practices at lower levels, which also have problems. The amount of violence at youth sporting events has risen in recent years, last week in Wisconsin a high school made national headlines due to fans rioting. Parents being involved is not neccesarily the issue, it's how to be involved without interferring with daily opperations of a program. Sure there are coaches that are not at all like the greats: North Carolina, Duke, Syracuse, Georgetown, Indiana's, to name a few great ones. Yet, they do have a passion for kids, and when left to do their job, have kids placed first. Not every profession allows scrutiny to occur AT work. Unlike parents, most coaches, if any, do not go to a parents place of business and criticize how things are working or not working. We tend to lose site that this is just a GAME, played for fun and competitiveness. The original inventor did not intend for this game to become so large and transcending in our scociety; too where shoes, clothes, and behaviors are based upon outcomes of a games events. A select few parents over step their boundaries and need to be educated as to how an individual can make their childs experience positive win/lose. Basketball is ultimately about learning life lesson in hopes it makes you a better individual.
  15. Who shoots 30/33 free throws in todays mondern ball game? Or fouls lopsided 27 to 7 in favor of Bradley. Home and Away is sooooo sweet.
  16. What does Franklin County have returning? They finished pretty low in districts, can they compete on a regular basis with the est of the district and region? Give me some information inregards to this position, it would be greatly appreciated before thursday of this week. Thanks. No bashing, just facts about the possibility of building this program.
  17. 1 Brainerd - 5 district champs in a row team to beat 2 Ooltewah 3 Red Bank 4 Soddy Daisy 5 Chatt Central
  18. What sport are you looking for, football or basketball? if basketball, contact Red Bank High School.
  19. your email was interesting and very uncalled for. If you understand High School Athletics at all, you should understand that there should be due process. Yes, Coach Woods had issues, however, less than a week later you fill it? Come on, alterer motives I think so! I suppose you would say the same about the football position and Coach Ryan. Or maybe even the Girls Coach who has been removed after this year. Is it truely the coaches or is it Soddy fair-weathered fans?
  20. It is amazing that parents and fans have what is called ESPN armchair coaching abilities. Everyone thinks that it is easy to coach 15-18 year olds for 4-5 months out of the year. Yet, they do not realize that they are not at practices or in the school when mommie and daddie are not around and kids make poor judgement calls. Even programs that are having success have problems on or off the court. These are kids that we are trying to teach lessons about life, not just wins and losses. Ooltewah is having success this year, yet they will struggle when they get out of their district like any other team in that district. The Cleveland's, Bradley's, and McMinn's take this sport more serious. There is more of a Community atmosphere than there is in Chattanooga. Look at the sports page on a daily basis, who do they write about the most? It definitely is not local Chattanooga teams, usually it is up Northeast of Chatt town that gets the press. Basketball is more serious there than in this town. Ooltewah and Soddy boys jobs should be good jobs, but parents interfere entirely too much! Unless a coach is harming a student/athlete, then leave the coaching to the coaches and watch your ESPN in your own home! I know more of what went on in that position than you know. It is real funny how the job came open on a Tuesday and was filled by that Friday a year ago (can you say set up?). Same thing in Soddy, Woods resigns last Wednesday and the position is filled by Thursday of the next week with two weeks to go in the regular season. How about due process? How about a job being posted for at least two weeks (oh yeah, that is written in some law is it not?)
  21. No, I am implying that fans pressured the principal to get rid of the coach because of the New Gym and the lack of success at a mediocre school.
  22. Is it true that Soddy Daisy has now fired their girls coach? That makes Football, Boys Basketball, and Girls Basketball all in one year. What is going on in Soddy? Are the fans that fickled? Do they have unrealistic expectations? Or is it the New Gym, so we need New Coaches? Any thoughts?
  23. It is amazing that just last Wednesday that Soddy Daisy had there boys coach resign with three weeks remaining in the regualr season. With that in mind, this must have been a set up! If they have already filled the boys position, it has not even been posted within Hamilton County. Sounds like an Ooltewah scheme a year ago. NEW GYM - NEW COACH. Amazing that parents have that much control over a school. I thought it was about the kids, not the WINS!
  24. Rumor has it that Shumaker interviewed today at Soddy and has the job. ANy truth? Also, the girls coach was asked to be assistant boys or step down. Anyone have any news?
