  1. Cooper took the job as football coach at Unicoi Co. Not quite sure how things will turn out, but can't go anywhere but up! As for Elizabethton, no clue how that will turn out.
  2. Most people probably haven't, Region 1-4A. School is 8-12 with a student body of approximately 1,000 with the 8th grade included, 800 without. I can definitely see pay being an issue with trying to recruit a coach from West or Middle with the system being so small, but the cost of living isn't as bad either. If the coach enjoys a challenge and wants to get his hands dirty rebuilding a team, I think the entire county would welcome him.
  3. Drew Pettit has resigned from the head coaching job at Unicoi Co. What coaches are out there to be tapped for this job and bring football back to a prominant position in this little piece of the state?
  4. I do agree that a good job is usually done by everyone. However I do respectfully disagree that the athletes are most often the cause of problems. Fan control on a track and field meet can be one of the toughest situations to deal with, much more so than events played at a football stadium or enclosed gymnasium. Dealing with a crowd on an open track surface is mostly left up to coaches with more important duties to deal with or overworked volunteers trying to do the best they can. I have participated in both middle and high school track meets as well as been employed as staff at the indoor NAIA championships in Johnson City. Even an arena such as the Memorial Stadium (our little Mini-Dome) is not immune to disruption. We must do the best job we can with the little resources our sport is allotted. It is this determination that makes our sport the class act it is and a crowning jewel in TSSAA athletics. Good luck to all teams this season!
  5. I played all four years of high school football and started dipping my sophomore year. My coach at the time did but that in no way affected my decision, it was other players that just kinda got me into it. He was always very strict about us with regard to tobacco.....it was banned from the stadium (a wall outside the stadium became a somewhat popular hangout spot before and after practice) and banned from the bus. That rule didn't always work out very well but I found his intent very strong, he always talked to us about how we should never start lest we end up like him. I see it as a personal choice, I still dip and probably won't stop for a while. However, I wouldn't wish that anyone else start for the world. As far as the TSSAA is concerned, they have jurisdiction over the events and have every right to ban smoking, however I don't see a major impact from dipping at the field, unless an enterprising individual put it in their mouthpiece . BTW: Tried that, don't do it!
  6. Erwin has always had only one high school.....Unicoi County. Founded in 1922, played under name Erwin high for a while but always officially covered the entire county. Funny, we used to be the yellow jackets for a little while before becoming the Blue Devils in the late 30's-early 40's I believe.
  7. She's critical but stable, going through surgery about every other day. 40% burns to head, neck and abdomen. Probably be in Vanderbilt at least 4-6 months.
  8. Unicoi County High School 01-04, OT-DT. Blew my left knee out my Sr. year but still loved every minute of it.
  9. Prayers from the University of Tennessee System. --UCHS Alumnus
  10. Lovin' the support from all the other teams in the District. Hope Central's game against Alcoa goes well and our game against AE isn't half bad either. GO DISTRICT 1-AA!
  11. This very well may be one of the best threads I've ever seen on this website. Seeing a school's team come out with their shorts around their ankles really reflects on how the school's teaching down there and how the parent's are parenting. If you can't dress yourself, how are you gonna be able to do anything after high school basketball?
  12. All that you must have in order to be a referee in this state is a High School diploma, a 70 on an OPEN BOOK TEST, recommendation from a school official and of course a registration fee. Now I'm not knocking all the officials; most of my family has refereed on the high school and college level and I've worked as a scorekeeper so I know there are some good ones out there. It's just the luck of the draw. For further information I'd suggest calling Terry Hillier, who is in charge of registration of officials at the TSSAA.
  13. The loss to Sullivan East was at the very beginning of the season and as far as a weak schedule goes, we've blown pretty much every opponent out except Valley and Central. I'm not gonna say we've got this one in the bag, we're travelling to a very tough opponent but this is the farthest our team has went in a long time, momentum is on our side to get the job done! GO DEVILS!
  14. Well for starters, look above your heads....it says Blue Devil seating, visitors are at the end of the bleachers. You failed to mention one of our FEMALE fans getting punched in the face by a Central guy (actually come to think about it it was our coach's wife!). That's why we had to send the whole police squad down to seperate yall. Our students stood in OUR stands and stayed out of the fight yall started, which delayed the game ten minutes and hurt nobody but the teams on the court. It was a hard fought game to the end and Central antics aside was a good match for both. We're both headed to the sub-state so don't be surprised if we run into yall once again in Murfeesboro for round 5! Oh by the way, thanks for keeping your shirts on this game, nothing kills the mood quite like seeing a bunch of fat guys shaking their cellulite around. Edit: As to the things about posters and newspapers, we had an announcement by our AD- the tournament director for both District and Regional Championships, specifically directing no signs, no newspapers, no painting unless done off school premises, oh yeah and keep your shirt on. I know at the very least the shirt thing was given to you guys because our administration put a call in.
  15. Unicoi and Central both had easy teams coming up to the final, Central just took theirs more seriously and blew them out. Here's to round 4......ding, ding.
  16. Unicoi took the day off tonight and it showed in their performance, but come Central they'll be pumped up and ready to take the Region just like they did the District.
  17. I will now officially count Union out.
  18. Well obviously you didn't see the beatin y'all got in the district coming so don't be surprised if we blind y'all in the region too!
  19. I agree that it's very likely we'll have a rematch with Central...our side of the bracket is fairly weak with Union Co, Volunteer and Claiborne. Just can't wait to see how the very likely Valley-Central matchup turns out.
  20. The standard policy here in Unicoi County for cancelling games is a bit different than cancelling school. As long as the main roads and interstates are clear to and from the school, a game will still be held. Keeping the schools open, however, means every road in the county must be fairly clear, and with most of our area in the high mountain region, that's pretty much impossible in a good snow. So enjoy tonight's contests, because we will be having them!
  21. I'm a Blue Devil too, and those words give me hives. However, its the truth, so I'll go along with it.......till Friday.
  22. It is absurd to think that any basketball game would go on without antics like this. We no longer live in the 1950's where every basketball game looked like it came out of a "Leave it to Beaver" episode. As the times have changed so have the ways the fans have came to cheer on the players. Obviously the author of the original post thinks that we're still in this idealistic world where everyone comes out a winner and no one goes home unhappy. I am a Unicoi County Blue Devil and very proud of it. If you can't handle one of our ballgames, maybe you need to stop going in general.
  23. Unicoi County AT Johnson County Thursday at 7:30 due to Ivan.
  24. I hate to hear that about Coach Jenkins. He was always so welcoming to us when our team would come to play at Elizabethton. He will be missed.
  25. August 6th- Crockett at Unicoi Co. then another scrimage Wed. against Cherokee (?), Region 1 4A Jamboree on Thurs. and a final scrimage against Madison Co, NC Saturday. UC Football 2004- the Homecoming Tour
