  1. There are a handful of programs in the nation that are constantly in the top 10 in highly regarded tournaments. What these schools such as Blair Academy,NJ; Great Bridge,VA; El Reno,OK; Poway,CA and Bakersfield,CA; St Edward, OH; on and on. What these schools ALL have in common is that all of their best kids started wrestling in 4th grade at the latest. With the exception of the heavyweights, I garuntee that all of the State Champions from states like Ohio, California, and New Jersey(Consistantly the top 3 at Senior Nationals) started wrestling before middle school. The longer you have wrestled the easier it is to pick it up when the season comes around. So where kids from TN usually dont start till 6th grade at the earliest, they lose the flow of the sport during Football season or during Baseball season.
  2. Didnt Simpson beat Esposito ant the NCAAs 2 years ago? This might be the year he gets it done.
  3. Soms. What was the deal with all of the Smyrna Forfiets. Were there guys that didnt show up the second day?
  4. What I meant was in 2 years Smyrna will be up to where they were in the 2002-2004 years. I would like to see them do better though. Gonyea I was always the only guy that made you fell tall. Thats hard to do too.
  5. Did Smyrna have a bunch of guys not make weight? It is wierd to see them that low in a tournament that wasnt really that hard. Things certainly have changed since I was there. I think the graduating class of 2004 was the last good Smyrna team for a while. At least for 2 years.
  6. If you place second in state you are not out of shape. I believe he only lost the match by one point. Kenny Meredith has progressed faster than any wrestler I have ever seen. to go from Freshman year to the finals in your Junior year is pretty darn good.
  7. Well I doubt that Smyrna won because Gonyea is slacking on posting the results. If they would have won they would have been up like 10 seconds after. He has done this since I was on the team.
  8. Derrick Pierce was the 160 pounder from Smyrna. Talent wise he was as good as anybody. He was just not consistent. He could be bent in the most awful positions and come up smiling cause he was double jointed. It was pretty cool. I think had it not been for a shoulder injury he would have placed at state his senior year.
  9. I would say that Bobby Hale from Smyrna is the best. Just to throw out a few other Smyrna names that Sommers and Gonyea forgot. Matt Wallace, who placed at McCallie but didnt place at state. Also Derrick Pierce who was easily beating Quinn Gibson from Bradley before he shot in and cut his eye clean open.
  10. Gonyea will definitely gain a few grey hairs after running this tournament. It looks like it will be a good day though. Does anybody know how Smyrna did against Overton? I never heard the results of that one.
  11. From the looks of it. It looks like Smyrna will win this one. most likely with ease. This looks like a good tournament to build confidence for a young team. Good teams but not any powerhouses.
  12. I havent checked but I would probably say that coach Del is correct here. I have been to this tournament and it is harder than the tennessee state. I would have a hard time believing someone who couldnt make the finals of state in TN could win the reno tournament. I think this tournament is ranked #3 in the country behind The Beast and the Ironman. There is usually like 60 something teams there. The winners of this tournament are usually multiple time state winners. Just to give an idea, the only 4 time state winner from california never won this tournament.
  13. I don't think that they will win the duals but I think they will win the individual. They have too many strong wrestlers not too. I think their weak spots are too weak to win the duals.
  14. 1A:DCA 2A:Alcoa 3A:Greenbriar 4A:Maryville 5A:Riverdale I would say that the Boyd/DCA game and the Melrose/Maryville game will be the closest along with the Fulton/Greenbrier game. 5A will most likely be a blowout. 2A will be at least 2 TDs difference.
  15. Is this one Napolean Dynamite. I have never seen it.
  16. I prmise any quote from Coach Gonyea will be from Dumb and Dumber. Anyways here is one that the younger guys might get. "She was like. "I hate this job. I'm gonna brun this mother down." And I was like, "No your not," "No you not."
  17. I watched it. It was a great story. Especially when the girl called in and asked if he was mad at God. He then told the women he considered his condition a blessing. A true lesson in humility for all of us to follow.
  18. I know they flopped in the playoffs, but I really think the coach from McGavock has done a great job. Especially considering how late in the summer he came in. First region title ever. I see only good things in the future at McGavock.
  19. This is the first time in the past few years I can honestly say that Riverdale has the better team. They made it to the championship game last year on heart and a few good breaks.Brentwood from 2002 was the better team as well. Riverdale will win this game because the best team has won state the past couple of years. Except for maybe Lincoln Co. last year.
  20. I know they didn't give out any trophies tonight. That just goes to another argument that they should have the playoffs seeded to make sure the two best teams are in the final. All of the other classes have the best two teams except for 5A. Franklin beat an underachieving overrated Germantown team. Riverdale beat the second best team in the state. Riverdale will win this one and return to their standard of the regular season and have the second team guys playing the 4th quarter.
  21. The real state championship was tonight. Besides obviously Riverdale, Oak Ridge, Cookville, Lebanon, Dobyns Bennett, and Smyrna could have won the west half of the bracket. Thats 5 other teams that are better than the semi finalist from that half. Riverdale played the second best team in the state tonight and won 42-28. Franklin will have some success passing, but the last team that had success passing on Riverdale lost 48-28. I predict Riverdale will win by at least 3 TDs.
  22. I dont know how long this coach has been coaching there but I can say that a coach can have a negative effect on a program. For example, My freshman year our team went undefeated and lost in the semi finals of the playoffs. We had the number one offense and a top rated defense with the number one secondary. My freshman team went 10-0 and won a league title. all of the freshman moved up to JV because in California where I am from only the best of the best play Varsity as sophmores. Our varsity coach moved to a better school. They didn't hire a coach that took time to meet the players and build relationships and hired some guy who was successful like 20 years ago. Our varsity was unsuccessful due to Graduation but our JV team was the same players in tact from an undefeated team that averaged 30 points a game and allowed 3 points a game on defense. Our new head coach for the JV preceded to take this team and turn them into a 3-7 team who averaged 14 points a game and gave up at least 21 every game. The only difference was the coaching. I used to believe that if you had good players coaching didn't make any difference until this happened to me.
  23. It only helps if the teams have a decent shot at winning. No offense to Austin East but Independence is in the largest class in NC and has a much higher population that Austin East. I would really like to see Riverdale play Hoover or Valdosta.
  24. Who would they be coming out for. I know Kenny just signed with Central Okalhoma. Thats great news for wrestling in TN.
  25. I think for the duals they take the top team from every region and give the top 2 seeded teams a first round bye. This might not work for A/AA but it would for AAA.
