  1. Head coach is from Guntersville, AL. Assistants-1 from Lipscomb, 2 from Indiana, 1 from Ripley, 1 from Ashland City, 1 from Page and 1 from Canton Ohio. They all coached with Coach McCadams, so in that sense they are "from Lipscomb". Last year, Coach Tillman was the region coach of the year. I guess he forgot everything he knew then and the second tier coaches must have also forgotten all they used to know. OR, it could be that losing 3 straight pretty good classes of players, with two small classes behind them and having up to 9 starters miss games with injuries has made for a pretty tough rebuilding job.
  2. The score was 38-7 on the play you are referring to, so the clock was not running. Lipscomb was up 31 points, not the 35 to get a running clock. It was running for awhile, and then Goodpasture scored. Just went back and looked at the play. Lipscomb ran a trap to the split end side. The back broke it off to the left side. Probably not what the coaches had in mind, but you have already judged their intentions. There was an unblocked LBer who would have made the play had the back not ran backside. In my mind, there is a big difference in running up the middle on the split end side with the 3rd/4th string in from the 12 yard line and throwing a pass into the endzone, but I know others will disagree. If they get stopped, the clock stops on the change of possession. The running clock didn't start until after Lipscomb kicked off after the score, by rule. As for the "onside kick", it may have looked like one, but it was intended to hit between the 30 and 35. It was a mis-hit by the kicker. You already have your mind made up about what to think, so you will think it and be reaching an incorrect conclusion about Coach Tillman. He taught both of my kids and is as fine of a man as I have ever known. Too late to change it, so you will just have to think what you want to think.
  3. I would love to have seen the look on Coach Mac's face this morning when he heard that familiar voice say, "I see you Coach Mac, I see you." I imagine he replied as always, "I see you too, Chuck."
  4. Lipscomb Academy is looking for an away freshman football game for either Tuesday, August 28 or Thursday, August 30. It will need to be an away game due to construction at our track making field access unavailable. If interested, please call David Morris at 615-966-5949.

  6. Your concerns affect a lot of sports. This happened a few years ago. A kid missed a Saturday track meet due to an AAU basketball game. The next week, the father went to the track coach and told him that he was disappointed that the track coach allowed him to miss the meet and that he felt that his son should put a school team over a non-school team. He asked the coach to require his son to put track first if any more conflicts came up. Now here is the interesting part of the story. That dad was the head basketball coach of the school. I wish all coaches in every sport would give that kind of support to their school teams. Too many kids specialize today at an early age. In my opinion, many would be better off to get a variety of experiences by participating in several sports. Some parents want their kids to play a sport year round so they can have a college "career". Many never make it past high school and some burn out before they graduate.
  7. On the day that Coach Matthews was dismissed, a friend of mine who is very close to Coach Matthews told me that would go after a prominent name and Ingle Martin was the name he was hearing. That was a couple of months ago, so I just wonder if this was the plan all along. If not, then I need to get stock tips from my friend, because he can see into the future. That being said, I have no doubt that Coach Martin will be a great coach. He has learned from the best and he is great with kids.
  8. From an outsider who knows Coach Mathews and has seen his teams play a few times a year, this move was a complete shock. When a friend came by Friday morning and told me about this, I had a hard time believing it. His teams were out-manned badly in their new region, yet they stayed competitive with much bigger schools. If they had played the old schedule they had in the early 2000's, they would have been one of the premier teams in the state the last 2 years. You just can't compare what he did the last 2 seasons with what CPA did when they were 1A. It is not like comparing apples and oranges. It is like comparing raisins to watermelons. Single A football and being multiplied into a region with four 4a schools is not the same. They made the playoffs this year and were put out by the state runner-up. What are they expecting? Every coach has former players who don't like them. Those criticisms must be taken with a grain of salt. I once sat in the stands at Gallatin and listened to a former player badmouth Coach Calvin Short as being a sorry coach. (He was one of the most successful coaches Middle Tennessee has seen.) I heard this criticism while watching his undefeated Gallatin team play in the state semi-finals. You just can't please some people. As good of a coach as I think Jay is, he is an even better person. CPA is losing a quality individual. CPA started a lot of underclassmen this season. They should be stronger next year. They will probably bring in some big name to make a splash(like they did in basketball) have a great season with the experienced players and people will get on Coach T next season talking about Coach ____ (fill in the name with some ex NFL player or high profile coach) turned around the program and is a miracle worker. I hope Coach Mathews lands in a better place where he will be treated with loyality. He deserves it.
  9. Congratulations to Ensworth on the win. You made the plays you needed to make and you kept the faith and stayed within your system when Baylor went up 21-7. I had to run a few errands during the 2nd quarter, so I listened to the game on am 560. For the first few minutes, I didn't think I had the right game or station. I kept hearing them talk about the "tagers". I thought I was experiencing that winter time effect of radio waves traveling great distances on a cold, clear night and I must be picking up a high school game from somewhere way north of the Mason-Dixon line. The announcer sounded like my cousin from Lansing, Michigan and the color commentator sounded like a cross between Bo Schembechler and Moe Norman. They were entertaining, had great knowledge of the game and kept me informed of what was happening but I could tell that "they ain't from around here". It was really fun listening to them. I was just curious about where they are from.
  10. WOW! is correct. You took a post from a Giles County fan and were able to come up with a theory of how people feel about Maplewood. I know that Lipscomb and Giles County played twice a season for several years. Before that, Lipscomb and Goodpasture played twice. Someone usually posted things about how it was hard to beat a team twice in a season and I don't ever remember anyone reaching the conclusion you reached. This reminds me of an archealogist who finds a 500 year old pot and is able to construct a theory about an entire Indian village and how they lived. (and I had a great grandmother who was full blooded Shoshone, so I am not intending to say anything negative about native Americans) I think you read too much into the Wise one's post. Maplewood not only has a very talented team, they are very disciplined. I don't think there are too many people who will "out coach" Coach Broome and Coach Dorris Armstrong. His defenses are legandary.
  11. Here is one thing that happened well after the game ended and most fans had left the stadium. Coach McCadams and his wife and Coach O'Connor and his wife stood in the end zone and spent several minutes talking. Coach O'Connor's son later joined in the conversation. Last year, I saw a similar sight. Both of these men are fierce competitors, but when the dust settled and the game was over, their families met as friends. Great class by both families. And I didn't think the Scottish and Irish could get along.
  12. Crow is not that bad if it is prepared correctly. Have you ever thought about smoking it? A lemon-pepper marinate and mesquite wood makes this a favorite.
  13. Only the family and a few at Ensworth will know the whole story behind this. What is truly unfortunate is that a high profile 18 year old, is having a traumatic experience played out in the newpaper, radio, television and internet sites. While I haven't looked on any college recruiting websites, I am sure this will be a topic. The young man will be called lazy and the school and family will have accusations thrown at them. In the meantime, a young man must feel divestated. For it to happen at this point in the season, it has to be a very significant event. Whether or not Antontio has fault in the matter, it is truly a shame that it has to be played out before the public, but then America loves a good scandal. My hope is that whatever path he takes will lead to growth, that he will reach the potential he has and in 5 or 10 years, this will be a distant memory that he can look back on as a time when painful progress took place.
  14. I know this thread is old, but there is a guy at Overton who has a great voice. I heard him at the Metro Jamboree do the PA for the entire event and at the Overton/Stratford game, he was doing "promos" for the Bobcat concession stand. He has a voice that sounds like the character "Lotso" from Toy Story 3. He has a down home, folksy style that I really enjoyed. He would make a great narrator for Cracker Barrel commercials. .
  15. John was a very competent official. He loved football. He played for Buck Dozier at Lipscomb during the 70's and had a son who was a 3 year starter for Lipscomb in the early 2000's. His wife, Lois, is a math teacher in Brentwood. Please remember Lois and their sons, John and Robbie, in your prayers. May you rest in peace.
