  1. Head coach is from Guntersville, AL. Assistants-1 from Lipscomb, 2 from Indiana, 1 from Ripley, 1 from Ashland City, 1 from Page and 1 from Canton Ohio. They all coached with Coach McCadams, so in that sense they are "from Lipscomb". Last year, Coach Tillman was the region coach of the year. I guess he forgot everything he knew then and the second tier coaches must have also forgotten all they used to know. OR, it could be that losing 3 straight pretty good classes of players, with two small classes behind them and having up to 9 starters miss games with injuries has made for a pretty tough rebuilding job.
  2. The score was 38-7 on the play you are referring to, so the clock was not running. Lipscomb was up 31 points, not the 35 to get a running clock. It was running for awhile, and then Goodpasture scored. Just went back and looked at the play. Lipscomb ran a trap to the split end side. The back broke it off to the left side. Probably not what the coaches had in mind, but you have already judged their intentions. There was an unblocked LBer who would have made the play had the back not ran backside. In my mind, there is a big difference in running up the middle on the split end side with the 3rd/4th string in from the 12 yard line and throwing a pass into the endzone, but I know others will disagree. If they get stopped, the clock stops on the change of possession. The running clock didn't start until after Lipscomb kicked off after the score, by rule. As for the "onside kick", it may have looked like one, but it was intended to hit between the 30 and 35. It was a mis-hit by the kicker. You already have your mind made up about what to think, so you will think it and be reaching an incorrect conclusion about Coach Tillman. He taught both of my kids and is as fine of a man as I have ever known. Too late to change it, so you will just have to think what you want to think.
  3. I would love to have seen the look on Coach Mac's face this morning when he heard that familiar voice say, "I see you Coach Mac, I see you." I imagine he replied as always, "I see you too, Chuck."
  4. Lipscomb Academy is looking for an away freshman football game for either Tuesday, August 28 or Thursday, August 30. It will need to be an away game due to construction at our track making field access unavailable. If interested, please call David Morris at 615-966-5949.

  6. Your concerns affect a lot of sports. This happened a few years ago. A kid missed a Saturday track meet due to an AAU basketball game. The next week, the father went to the track coach and told him that he was disappointed that the track coach allowed him to miss the meet and that he felt that his son should put a school team over a non-school team. He asked the coach to require his son to put track first if any more conflicts came up. Now here is the interesting part of the story. That dad was the head basketball coach of the school. I wish all coaches in every sport would give that kind of support to their school teams. Too many kids specialize today at an early age. In my opinion, many would be better off to get a variety of experiences by participating in several sports. Some parents want their kids to play a sport year round so they can have a college "career". Many never make it past high school and some burn out before they graduate.
  7. On the day that Coach Matthews was dismissed, a friend of mine who is very close to Coach Matthews told me that would go after a prominent name and Ingle Martin was the name he was hearing. That was a couple of months ago, so I just wonder if this was the plan all along. If not, then I need to get stock tips from my friend, because he can see into the future. That being said, I have no doubt that Coach Martin will be a great coach. He has learned from the best and he is great with kids.
  8. From an outsider who knows Coach Mathews and has seen his teams play a few times a year, this move was a complete shock. When a friend came by Friday morning and told me about this, I had a hard time believing it. His teams were out-manned badly in their new region, yet they stayed competitive with much bigger schools. If they had played the old schedule they had in the early 2000's, they would have been one of the premier teams in the state the last 2 years. You just can't compare what he did the last 2 seasons with what CPA did when they were 1A. It is not like comparing apples and oranges. It is like comparing raisins to watermelons. Single A football and being multiplied into a region with four 4a schools is not the same. They made the playoffs this year and were put out by the state runner-up. What are they expecting? Every coach has former players who don't like them. Those criticisms must be taken with a grain of salt. I once sat in the stands at Gallatin and listened to a former player badmouth Coach Calvin Short as being a sorry coach. (He was one of the most successful coaches Middle Tennessee has seen.) I heard this criticism while watching his undefeated Gallatin team play in the state semi-finals. You just can't please some people. As good of a coach as I think Jay is, he is an even better person. CPA is losing a quality individual. CPA started a lot of underclassmen this season. They should be stronger next year. They will probably bring in some big name to make a splash(like they did in basketball) have a great season with the experienced players and people will get on Coach T next season talking about Coach ____ (fill in the name with some ex NFL player or high profile coach) turned around the program and is a miracle worker. I hope Coach Mathews lands in a better place where he will be treated with loyality. He deserves it.
  9. Congratulations to Ensworth on the win. You made the plays you needed to make and you kept the faith and stayed within your system when Baylor went up 21-7. I had to run a few errands during the 2nd quarter, so I listened to the game on am 560. For the first few minutes, I didn't think I had the right game or station. I kept hearing them talk about the "tagers". I thought I was experiencing that winter time effect of radio waves traveling great distances on a cold, clear night and I must be picking up a high school game from somewhere way north of the Mason-Dixon line. The announcer sounded like my cousin from Lansing, Michigan and the color commentator sounded like a cross between Bo Schembechler and Moe Norman. They were entertaining, had great knowledge of the game and kept me informed of what was happening but I could tell that "they ain't from around here". It was really fun listening to them. I was just curious about where they are from.
  10. WOW! is correct. You took a post from a Giles County fan and were able to come up with a theory of how people feel about Maplewood. I know that Lipscomb and Giles County played twice a season for several years. Before that, Lipscomb and Goodpasture played twice. Someone usually posted things about how it was hard to beat a team twice in a season and I don't ever remember anyone reaching the conclusion you reached. This reminds me of an archealogist who finds a 500 year old pot and is able to construct a theory about an entire Indian village and how they lived. (and I had a great grandmother who was full blooded Shoshone, so I am not intending to say anything negative about native Americans) I think you read too much into the Wise one's post. Maplewood not only has a very talented team, they are very disciplined. I don't think there are too many people who will "out coach" Coach Broome and Coach Dorris Armstrong. His defenses are legandary.
  11. Here is one thing that happened well after the game ended and most fans had left the stadium. Coach McCadams and his wife and Coach O'Connor and his wife stood in the end zone and spent several minutes talking. Coach O'Connor's son later joined in the conversation. Last year, I saw a similar sight. Both of these men are fierce competitors, but when the dust settled and the game was over, their families met as friends. Great class by both families. And I didn't think the Scottish and Irish could get along.
  12. Crow is not that bad if it is prepared correctly. Have you ever thought about smoking it? A lemon-pepper marinate and mesquite wood makes this a favorite.
  13. Only the family and a few at Ensworth will know the whole story behind this. What is truly unfortunate is that a high profile 18 year old, is having a traumatic experience played out in the newpaper, radio, television and internet sites. While I haven't looked on any college recruiting websites, I am sure this will be a topic. The young man will be called lazy and the school and family will have accusations thrown at them. In the meantime, a young man must feel divestated. For it to happen at this point in the season, it has to be a very significant event. Whether or not Antontio has fault in the matter, it is truly a shame that it has to be played out before the public, but then America loves a good scandal. My hope is that whatever path he takes will lead to growth, that he will reach the potential he has and in 5 or 10 years, this will be a distant memory that he can look back on as a time when painful progress took place.
  14. I know this thread is old, but there is a guy at Overton who has a great voice. I heard him at the Metro Jamboree do the PA for the entire event and at the Overton/Stratford game, he was doing "promos" for the Bobcat concession stand. He has a voice that sounds like the character "Lotso" from Toy Story 3. He has a down home, folksy style that I really enjoyed. He would make a great narrator for Cracker Barrel commercials. .
  15. John was a very competent official. He loved football. He played for Buck Dozier at Lipscomb during the 70's and had a son who was a 3 year starter for Lipscomb in the early 2000's. His wife, Lois, is a math teacher in Brentwood. Please remember Lois and their sons, John and Robbie, in your prayers. May you rest in peace.
  16. The private schools are dominating the 3A and 4A playoffs. You might just see all private school finals in both classes in Cookeville in 2 weeks. It is unfair the way these privates schools are whipping the public schools in the playoffs. Oops! Nevermind. Lipscomb and Goodpasture were eliminated last week. (And Catholic was eliminated in 5A). Well, they are dominating 1A and 2A. There is 1 private school (of 8 total) left in 1A and 2 schools left in 2A. Trousdale has a good chance to eliminate one of them tonight. I just don't see the domination in D1 that this post seems to suggest.
  17. And by the way...if you have a chance to ask Coach Mac....inquire as to why DL refused to schedule Giles Co during the regular season this year. We would all like to hear it, I mean, most already know.....but it would be nice to hear it from you. Lipscomb had 4 non-region games. Goodpasture and Greenbrier are longtime rivals. They picked up Page, a 25 mile trip (and a team they have played many times over the years) and Overton, a 3 mile trip. With the very real possibility (and it is now reality) that Lipscomb and Giles County would face each other in the playoffs, why would DL schedule them in the regular season? They didn't exactly load up on cupcakes. All 4 of their non-region opponents were playoff teams and the region opponents included Maplewood, Whites Creek and Pearl-Cohn. I never have liked playing the same team twice in a season. (The winner of this game has the possibilty of playing Page a 2nd time. I think Page will look forward to trying to avenge a regular season loss.) But maybe you are right. Playing a 6A playoff team (that was loaded with juniors) that is 3 miles away doesn't make sense when DL could have traveled 70 miles to Pulaski. I guess this shows the mustangs took the easy way out.
  18. The TSSAA scoreboard has a final of White's Creek 5 Maplewood 0 listed. Can anyone confirm that?
  19. What are the odds that Rogers can turn a bunt into an inside the park homerun /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> ?
  20. Let's just get it all out on the table. Ronnie Carter is responsible for: -global warming -the sub-prime mortgage meltdown -the impeachment of the Illinois governor -the Iraq war -the great depression of the 1930's -WW I and WW II -Michigan's loss to Appalachian State in 07 and every other bad thing that has happened in the history of mankind. He and George W. Bush conspired to bring this country down. Thank goodness Keith Olberman on MSNBC saved us from these evil tyrants. If your team ever loses a game, blame Ronnie. If an official makes a bad call, blame Ronnie. If the grass in centerfield is bare, blame Ronnie. If the roof leaks in the gym-yep its Ronnie's fault. Now that we have that all out in the open, I have known and worked with Ronnie for over 25 years. As others have stated, I have not agreed with many of the decisions, but I have great respect for the man and understand that he makes decisions based on what is best for the entire TSSAA. On a few occassions when I thought I had the answers, he has shared wisdom and insight that showed my viewpoint was a little shortsighted. His relationship with the member schools and the general public is very similiar to the relationship that exists between a coach and parents. Many parents want what they feel is best for their child (my child must be the starting quarterback, pitcher, point guard...). The coach must make decisions based on what is best for the team. That may mean that your child is the 3rd string right guard or the backup right fielder.... There will always be conflicts between coaches and parents. On many issues, Ronnie gets rocks thrown at him from both sides. I appreciate all he has done for high school athletics in Tennessee and I wish him lots of fun time with his grandchildren and low scores on the golf course. Most of all, I hope he can enjoy a life away from the constant complaints of others. Good luck Bernard. I hope the wolves will give you a few fun years before they start circling around you.
  21. There is a great football clinic that will be at the Opryland Hotel from January 11-14 as part of the annual AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) convention. There will be several thousand college and high school coaches at this clinic. I have been to a few AFCA conventions and they are excellent. They have a separate high school clinic, but coaches are free to attend the college sessions as well. One of the best aspects of this clinic is the high profile NCAA coaches that you will see walking around. I still remember a clinic back in the 1980's. I was in the restroom when I suddenly found myself standing between Barry Switzer of Oklahoma and Lavell Edwards of BYU. This was the week after BYU was named the national champions and Barry Switzer lobbied the press against them because he felt OU played a much tougher schedule. To say there was a lot of tension in the air would be a huge understatement. At another AFCA clinic in Atlanta in the 1990's, I ended up on an escalator between Tom Osborne and Bill Curry. You never know who you will be next to at the AFCA. Look on their website for more clinic info.
  22. Great serious post edward. This seems to be much "ado about nothing". (Eventhough I was educated at a Tennessee public school, I did learn a little about Shakespeare.) In many years of watching Lipscomb football, they have had very few linemen the size I saw all across this year's Giles County line. Did this give Giles an unfair advantage? No, it is just the way things were. The Giles coaches did a great job of using their line to their advantage. I am sure Lipscomb would like to have some of that Pulaski size when they line up against Mitchell's 300 lb+ linemen Friday night. Giles played 2 great games against Lipscomb. Either game could have gone to them. The Bobcats should be back in the hunt in 2009.
  23. The bad thing about this is someone will read this and actually believe and tell others that Lipscomb has boarding students and/or a job placement service for the parents of athletes. How ridiculous. If Lipscomb is recruiting, why do they start 2 guards that weigh in the neighborhood of 180 lbs. One of them was a reserve running back up until August. Now they did hire a man about 10 years ago just to get his son to play quarterback. They went so far as to make Steve Flatt the president of the University just to get his son Ethan in the middle school. Ethan was a wide receive in middle school at Goodpasture. But Lipscomb knew he would develop into a major college quarterback and gave his dad a job to fulfull a quarterback need. Makes you wonder.... For anyone who wants to think Dr. Flatt got the job because of his son, let me know. I have several million dollars from a Nigerian Bank that I would like to put into your bank account. I just need to get your checking account number. /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="
  24. I would be very surprised if you are really from Alcoa and would start a thread like this. /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" But you do bring up some good points. Opened zoned and magnet schools have some definite advantages.
  25. Coach McCadams played quarterback at Huntingdon. He was on a team with Tim Priest, of the UT football radio network. He suffered a broken leg that ended his football playing days early. He also played basketball and baseball at Huntingdon and Bethel College. He seems to have done pretty well for a coach with no college experience.
