  2. I know this is a 5A -6A message, but I will go ahead and post the 2024 Anderson County Maverick Schedule as it has 2 5A teams and 2 6 A teams on it. GO MAVS 8-22. POWELL HOME (Rivalry Thursday Game ) 8-30 @ SCIENCE HILL 9-6 BEARDEN HOME 9-13. FULTON HOME* 9-20. @ SEYMOUR* 9-27 CARTER* 10-4. CLINTON 10-11. FALL BREAK OFF WEEK 10 -18. @ KNOX WEST 10-25. @ GIBBS* 10-31. @ SOUTH DOYLE* *. REGION GAME
  3. Coach Gillum will take the Mavs to Crossville Thursday for their final scrimmage. They have had 3 really good scrimmages, and answered some questions up front and at QB. Stone Memorial is a senior team I hear, so this should be another really good opportunity for some players to show the coaches what they have. We are just a few days away from Powell, and I hope the Mavs can get out of Crossville injury free. The Powell-AC game has been a barn burner the last 4-5 years, and I know this year should be the same.
  4. I don't think they are defending anything. I think this is a brand new team with a new dream. I haven't heard any talk from coaches or kids about defending a championship. I think they have their eyes on going into Powell healthy and battle tested with these scrimmages they have had. I would love to see them run it back as the kids say, but this team has to focus on this years team and not get concerned with defending a title. They have won their region 6 straight years in a row, and I know that has to be something to reach for as well. People get spoiled with winning sometimes and think its automatic. It isn't. This Maverick team is very good, they have pieces in the right spots. I am hopeful to see them come out of the gate ready to run. Two more weeks and we will see the 23 Mavs show what they have and what they can do. These scrimmages are good for condition, but lets kick it off and then see what the Mavs have. Saw where The Davey Gillum Show will debut August 16, and should be a good one.
  5. I think they went 80 plays, and that is a good days work for a scrimmage. I like the physicality of it, there were some real battles up front, and both sides got a piece of the other there. Both lines were big in size, and both were very aggressive throughout the scrimmage.
  6. Saw it live, another 10 play scrimmage. AC kicker blasts the opening kick through the endzone to start it off. DB fans will have some fun watching a big and aggressive offensive line this season. AC has some big kids up front as well and they banged on each other the entire night. Watching the two front lines get after each other was about as much fun as what was happening on the perimeter. DB will run the football at ya, and put together some good drives, and scores. AC will throw the ball with Hall and run it with Moog. Miller, Small , James and Nelson led the defense They had some good drives, and scored as well . It is hard to pick a winner on 10 play drives unless one team just dominates another. Both teams will be playing in November, it was a very physical night for both teams, and both seemed to come out healthy, so that had to be a positive. JV went after it as well, not as clean as the older teams, but they had some really nice plays. I really enjoy watching two quality teams get after it.
  7. Saw it live, another 10 play scrimmage. AC kicker blasts the opening kick through the endzone to start it off. DB fans will have some fun watching a big and aggressive offensive line this season. AC has some big kids up front as well and they banged on each other the entire night. I really enjoy watching two quality teams get after it.
  8. Saw it live, AC kicker started it off by blasting a kickoff into the endzone, and each team got ten plays. Both teams moved the ball, BC got the first score of the ten plays, but AC moved the ball with moog and the new qb1. New QB can throw in and take off with it when he needs to. I will tell ya this, both teams hit some shots. It was a physical game, one player exited the game with his facemask torn off his helmet. They got after each other and that is fun to watch. FIrst scrimmages that are 10 play drives are what they are. Good work for lots of kids, Mavs made some great plays against a very good Bradley team who happens to have two SEC athletes on the field I am told. Bradley will be in the 6A hunt for the Championship, and the Mavs will be in the 4A championship hunt as long as both teams stay healthy. This Maverick team is finding their identity, the coaches are coaching them hard, and this team will be just fine. If you have been around the program , you know theses coaches will put a good product on the field. We will see improvement from them each week just like we always do.
  9. Bradley looked very good. QB was solid, got out on the perimeter a couple times and made a few runs. The Receivers were fast. Bradley has size and looked good on the first scrimmage. Both teams went ten plays, and both teams moved the ball. AC started on O, and Moog and company moved the ball down the field. I was impressed with the physical play from both teams. There will be some sore players today. Boo Carter had a good day, and seemed to have plenty around him to make sure teams can't just line up and stop him. Plays were dead when QB1s were touched , and special teams were dead. Both Kickers added points, AC has a great punter and kicker, hammered the ball into the endzone on kickoffs and his punts were 60. Both teams got after each other, and it was very fun fast scrimmage to watch.
  10. Cleveland has a ton of talent, and after seeing AC and Cleveland go at it in 7v7, and seeing the talent that those two teams had on the field, I feel very confident in saying that Cleveland will be a team to watch this season. Their OL/DL got some work against AC as well , and that was FUN to watch as well. Cleveland gets to the ball and snaps it faster than any team I have seen recently, and they have length on the edges to give DBs issues. AC is very good at 7v7, and threw the ball around the field, but Cleveland is very Athletic and will give teams issues with that. Their coaches have them playing fast and with some attitude. Look for AC and Cleveland to be playing in November with a shot at a trip to Chattanooga.
  11. 7v7 Season is over, and the Mavs came out healthy. They hosted Farragut last week, and as I watched the Mavs, they seemed to hit on all cylinders. Zae Hall threw the ball down the field and looked like the Mavs had multiple targets with passes to Pyatt, Small, James, Strickland, Milller, Cole, Johnson, Moog and LaRue out of the backfield. Defensively, the Mavs consistently did a great job breaking up passes and making plays all over the field, led by Cody Miller and Davis. The LBs played very well. Wolfenbarger was held, but should be back for practice next week. The Mavs traveled to Cleveland where the Raiders brought out the fast paced no huddle offense, and while both teams got after each other, the staff had very good things to say about how well the Mavs performed. I think the whole team traveled so the OL/DL guys got some work as well. Cleveland will be a 6 A contender this season according to those in the Chattanooga area, and it was great to hear the Mavs were able to travel and get some good work with a quality opponent. I watched the Kickers at practice last week, they were booming the ball , and I look for Radcliff to kick it out of the end zones again this season for no returns. This team has the pieces to make another run. Moog looks as good as he looked last season when he ran roughshod through 4 A gaining almost 1400 yards while the Mavs threw for over 3000. QB1 Hall looks very comfortable throwing the ball vertical down the field and he has plenty of targets. The Mavs open with another talented Powell team, and it should be another classic. The last three Powell AC games have been absolute show stoppers, and I know this one should be the same. Mavs host Boo Carter and Bradley Central Friday, and I expect a huge crowd to see it. As always, gotta stay healthy during scrimmage season, so prayers up for that.
  12. I got a look at the 2023 Mavs skill players Thursday as they hosted Maryville for 7v7. I know some will say it's just 7v7, but it is an opportunity to compete, and I am glad to see the ball on the turf again. We know the Mavs can rush the ball with Moog, as they did last season. Coach Gillum does what he does, and the Mavs looked like they can throw the ball again this season. Nick Moog , Small, LaRue, Strickland and some new faces, some I had never seen before were catching balls from two QBs, who aren't afraid to get it vertical down the field. They brought the ball back each play so they didn't move the ball up and down the field, but the Mavs have zero problems throwing the ball down the field. Moog was held out to keep from injury I am sure. He rushed for almost 2k last season, and I look for him to do that again. The OL guys were on hand to cheer their team on, and they looked huge. Mavs lost another big class, but they always do. Coaching staff was intact and all accounted for. Maryville is Maryville, they have 50 plus skill players and they are big. Both teams competed well and got after each other. High level passing games are entertaining to watch. Defensively, Coach Lambert has them playing fast and they made several big plays breaking on routes. Glad it is football season again, looking forward to seeing the 23 Mavs take the field. I'll try and get a roster for the team next so I can give a better report.
  13. LOL at the thread of best AD's , all I can say is You either love him, or wish you had him. Unlike you fm, GT's list is long and distinguished. He and his gang of friends have added Turf and Jumbotron to the campus with all private funds paid up front. Last I checked, Girl's soccer, softball and track all benefit from the turf and Soccer and Track have access to the Jumbotron. GT and his team have upgraded every locker room on campus, boy's and girl's, new gym floor, new locker room for soccer and track coming this spring under his leadership. So keep on running that big mouth, and keep watching GT raise the bar across East Tennessee.
  14. Maybe one of largest crowds in recent memory, and I think everyone got their money's worth. Mavs get the win over Powell. The pregame atmosphere was electric. Both teams looked the part. Mavs took the opening drive 90 yards in 8 minutes chewing up the clock, and went up 7-0. Powell struggled from the beginning. Potts was running for his life, as AC brought the pressure. Mavs offense scored on all by two possessions all night. The defense played well. Noe had over 100 yards in the first half splitting reps with Moog. Martinez and Vowell, Miller did what they do and threw the ball at will on Powell's secondary. Eli Braden had TD called back on a Kick Return and had another long run on a return called back. Play of the game might have been Cole's Pick 6 from 40 yards out. He made an outstanding run through traffic and into the endzone. Powell's QB, Potts was injured about drive number 3 , prayers for him. He is a very good player, and was running to throw from the first play as AC brought pressure all night. Mavs head up to Johnson City to play at Spurrier's house this week. Science Hill had a big win in the opener up there. 6A Science Hill maybe one of the biggest schools in the state. Looks like Pals will be on the menu. Mavs hit on all cylinders last night, and will need to bring their A game to Johnson City next week.
  15. Noe didn't play, Nick Moog carried the ball for the Mavs against OR. I talked to Noe at Meet the Mavs last night, he says he is clear for Friday's game with Powell. Moog, who is another 200 plus pound back that is physical and gets vertical quickly for his size. He and Noe will be a 1-2 punch for the Mavs Friday. Last season, Noe got most of the carries, but this season, I would look for Moog to get carries as well and keep Noe fresher for later in the game. Get your tickets early for Friday's game. It promises to be electric.
  16. Been busy making the dough, friends. Let me first say, the West Rebels are for real. I still think it was a very good scrimmage, but the Rebels got the best of the Mavs. FIrst drive started with 3 completions right down the field, and then we ran the ball and got stopped on a a ten play drive. A pick 6 put the Rebels up 7-0. The Mavs went on Defense and did a pretty good job against the run and the pass, but missed a tackle and the West Rec made them pay. That was the deal all night. The defense missed a tackle each drive, and the West player is gone. That is correctable. It was a fun scrimmage with a lot of big plays. The Mavs lone TD with the 1's came on a long pass to Zeke West. West wins 28-7. Kicking game looked very good. Radcliff bombed the kickoffs out of the endzone. He also punted a very high and deep punt to back West up. Young Mavs got in the fourth series of the scrimmage and LaRue, just like his daddy used to, out ran the defense for a long score. Cody Miller did a great job running the offense, and a freshman named Pyatt had over 150 yards on 2 catches for 2 tds for the Mavs. He is electric with the ball so that was very good to see. I think this team will respond well to the scrimmage and I will look forward to watching all the teams tomorrow night at the Jamboree at Carson Newman. Mavs are a little over a week away. I know the fans are super excited to get this season kicked off.
  17. Mavs host Knox West Monday. I am looking forward to this one. Both teams are physical, and both teams should be very good this season.
  18. Ran into to Coach Gillum and he says Knox West will travel up I 75 Monday at 6 for a scrimmage at Anderson County. Should be a great scrimmage. Mavs got rained out at DB last night.
  19. Anderson County will be headed up to DB this Friday, excited to see that stadium again. Its been a minute since I have been there, and I know it is a great place to watch a game. The Mavs had a really good opening scrimmage this week and I am hoping to see more from them this week. It was a hard hitting scrimmage last year at AC, so I am hoping for the same next Friday.
  20. Mavs hosted Stone Memorial last night. for about an hour and half. The crowd was enormous for a scrimmage. Huge rain came and ended it early, but the varsity got plenty of looks from a much improved SM team. The Mavs started with special teams. Mav kickers blasted them into the endzone, and used two punters, who both put out 50 plus yard punts that were not returnable. You can tell they have put some time into the special teams as they were very well organized compared to SM specials. Return games were dead, but the Mavs looked sharp and they had several returners who looked very athletic. Defensively, lets start up front, as the Mavs looked big and rolled in 6-8 big body kids there. They did a very good job giving the LBs a lane to make tackles. Davis is a headrocker, he punished backs in the middle and made several big hits tackle to tackle. Moog, Meier, and Miller all made impact plays and several really big hit tackles last night. The secondary was led by Russell, Braden, Allen, and Cole, but the Mavs seemed to be rolling secondary guys in all night. They have a lot of kids that can play back there. Israel Small is a safety, and he lights the candle when he comes down to stop the run game. He hit several big hits on RBs off tackle. Offensively, Martinez threw the ball very well. He hit his targets all night, and the Mavs had 2 incompletions all night. Larue and Moog split time at RB and combined for over 100 yards. Martinez hit Miller, West, Allen for tds I think, and Cody Miller scored on a long run as well. Down and distance drives with the chains looked really good against a good SM team. They have gotten better since the last time I saw them. Noe and Vowell did not play to keep them from injury. Moog and company made the run game go, and Braden Miller and co caught almost every ball. Mavs are headed to DB next Friday, it should be another great night to scrimmage.
  21. 28 days as of yesterday. The Mavs open with the 5 A State Champion Powell Panthers. This should be another great game. The last two years have been incredible games for the fans to watch. In 2020, Potts got loose on a scramble play and threw a deep ball to win it with just seconds left on the clock. In 2021, the Mavs jumped out to a 20 point lead in a three hour game only to run out of gas against a talented Powell team. These two coaching staffs know each other well, as do the players. Both offenses will be ready to showcase the talent they have, so the defenses will tell the tale of this game. Maverick Kicking game should be really good as they have a 4 star and 5 star Kohls Kicking Academy ranked kickers who should be able to make Powell start each drive on the 20.
  22. Fake News, friend., I have been by the 7v7s and practices. GT is there and is a live wire as usual. He brought back his old friend and Maverick favorite, Tony Lambert and the party seems to be on in Maverickland. Stop by next Friday and watch the Mavs host Stone Memorial , and I am sure you will see Coach GT or hear him on the field.
  23. Anderson County Makes the Bus ride to Kingsport DB August 5 for a scrimmage. It was a hard hitting physical affair last fall, and should be again. Anderson County's skill players were just too much for DB last time they met at AC. I will be looking forward to watching this one, as me and a few guys will make the trip up to see what the 2022 Mavericks look like.
  24. I got to see the Mavs host Farragut this week. Martinez put on another show. Noe and Vowell sat the 7v7 out, not sure why other than to maybe prevent an injury. Offensively, Martinez threw the ball all over the place. It was great to see Miller, Davis, Phillips, Moog, Cole, Russell, and Braden out there catching balls. Defensively, Davis and Meier played well in the middle, breaking up passes, but we all know those two like to tackle, and we will see them continue to do that this fall. Davis is two way player, and will need to be in his best shape. He was a beast last season playing both, and will need to do that again this season. Jermaine Allen is a STUD. He lined up at Corner, and did a great job breaking up several passes from a very good team from Farragut. Looking at the young Mavs, Allen's little brother Israel played very well as did Larue and Strickland. Mav fans will remember his brother Brad, who was stud receiver for the Mavs about ten years ago. Cody Miller took reps at QB, but really stood out at LB for the Mavs. The Mavs hosted Coach Gillum's Youth Full Pad Camp this week, and pictures show 150 + youth players in full pads participating. Knox Co Media day was posted by the AD, and it looked and sounded like the Mavericks are just as excited to get this season kicked off as the fans are. You can watch some of it on on YouTube at KFOA Media Day with VinceSports on the 99.1 The Sports Animal. One week closer to pads, Mavs Draw the Wildcats from OR in the 5Star jamboree, so all of Anderson County will look forward to that.
  25. All the improvements sound outstanding. DB needs to get back to being DB. That stadium needs to be filled like it used to, and it sounds like it is on its way. I talked to one of the Anderson County coaches the other day, and he says the Mavericks will return the scrimmage from last fall camp to DB in a few weeks. That scrimmage was a good one for the Mavericks as it got them ready for a physical Powell team which they play week 1. I will make that trip to see all the improvements and hopeful to see a big crowd for the scrimmage. The Mavs have had a very good run, and hope to be a deep playoff contender this season.
