Port,
Just curious... the "side judge" you are talking about.... was he on the side of the field with the chains or the side with no chains. There actually isn't a side judge in high school football, but I'm curious if you're talking about the Line Judge or the Head Linesman (with chains).
As an additional point, it's been my observation in Northeast Tennessee (Regions I and II) that there are actually a great deal of new young officials. And from talking with some friends of mine who are coaches, they are getting chances to get on the field within a couple of years. I've been told, in years past it took new young officials 5-7 years to get on the field. I'm originally from middle TN and I think they still operate the 5-7 year way (I think). Since Regions I & II have these new young guys, the answer must be something different... The Problem is---> There are a great deal of old (I mean old) officials that refuse to hang it up and they have been allowed to continue on. They need to know when to hang it up, or at least be religated to the clock job. The Line Judge and Head Linesman, along with the Back Judge need to be able to run. We can't expect them to run with the faster, bigger kids of today, but we can expect hustle and competance.
The old guys should move to volleyball.
