  2. If you do a google search for USJ football coach, you will see this link. USJ names Chris Smith as new head football coach https://wnws.com › usj-names-chris-smith-as-new-head-... It is a broken link. I have not seen nor heard anything else to indicate that he has been chosen as the new head football coach at USJ. That said, there are rumors that he is looking to leave Haywood. I cannot attest to the truth of those rumors. Maybe someone else can.
  3. Earlier this year five Haywood players were named to the TSWA 4A All-State Football Team. Twelve Tomcat football players signed scholarships yesterday. The scholarships totaled $1.5 million dollars. That’s pretty good for a rural West Tennessee football program! Actually, I think it’s pretty good for any football program! Haywood’s coaching staff does a great job of motivating players, helping them stay on track, gain recognition for their talent, and earn the opportunity to further their education. They do a great job of winning football games too! With all the rumors I’m hearing, will Coach Smith stay or leave? I know the Tomcats will return a number of backs including an all-state quarterback and an all-state running back. How are the offensive line, defensive line, and defensive secondary shaping up? Haywood County’s new SOS is going to have a tough job restoring discipline, improving academics, regaining community support, as well as preparing for the changes that will take place with the arrival of Blue Oval City. All of that is of the utmost importance, but will she support athletics as well? Will the Haywood County Commission and the Board of Education approve the money to build a much-needed athletic training facility? Will Haywood be able to find a 10th game to fill their schedule? How strong will region foes Crockett Co., Obion Central, Dyer Co., and Fayette-Ware be? I know how strong non-region foes Oakland and Hardin Co. will be! With South Gibson moving to Region 6-4A, what will we do without @ManOfMillionsto beat up on? I'm just kidding with you MOM. Last question...Tomcat fans (and non-Tomcat fans too), what are your thoughts concerning the 2023 season?
  4. I have no first-hand knowledge of what Coach Smith may or may not do, but I can list several reasons why he might consider leaving. 1. There’s no way Haywood, or any other public school system in West Tennessee, can match the salary USJ will offer him. 2. Haywood High is in shambles…no discipline, kids in control, fights, threats, low test scores…you name it! 3. Large numbers of students are leaving the system for Crockett Co. and the Jackson privates, and who can blame them. 4. I realize money is a problem, but the county commission and school board can’t, or won’t, support athletics. Just empty talk about a new stadium with a turf field and an athletic training facility. The training facility might happen, but I won’t believe it until I see it. (Haywood is rapidly falling behind other systems in West Tennessee as far as facilities are concerned.) Let’s face it. With his resume, Coach Smith could quit today, and have a job tomorrow. I hope he stays, but I can see why he might choose to leave.
  5. It's true. https://tssaasports.com/sports/schedules/index.cfm?sport=football&schoolid=222&type=high&schoolYear=2023
  6. The one, the only, the legendary Stacmot would like to wish everybody on the T a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year! That includes you too @BIGPURPLEMACHINE. Now, go play with your poll you filthy animal!
  7. It appears Hardin County's schedule is complete. I don't see Milan or USJ on the Tigers' schedule. https://tssaasports.com/sports/schedules/index.cfm?sport=football&schoolid=209&type=high&schoolYear=2023
  8. @BIGPURPLEMACHINE You liven things up!
  9. I know that's what BPM had in mind...lol.
  10. Bulldog the morning of Nov. 19. What hit me? Mercy, It happened so fast I didn't see it coming!
  11. As far as I know, there are no other schools in Tennessee with the mascot "Tomcats." However, I do know of some other schools in other states who have a "Tomcat" mascot. Paul Blazer High School, Ashland KY, East Aurora High School, Aurora IL, Stone High School, Wiggins MS, Tom Bean High School, Tom Bean TX, Trimble High School, Glouster OH, and Thiel College, Greenville PA. I'm sure there could be others, but at least we're unique in Tennessee. @ManOfMillions What are we going to do without you in Region 7 next year? I guess you'll come back for a post every now and then. Hopefully, you and @Tigersandcats will get Region 6 fans more active.
  12. I agree. I think it's the best atmosphere of any school in West Tennessee.
  13. You're welcome. Now go win that gold ball!
  14. The simple definition is a male cat. I’m surprised you did not know that! In a football sense, the definition of a Tomcat differs very little from that of a Tiger, Hornet, Bulldog, Firebird, Maverick, etc… A Tomcat (just like a Firebird) is an athlete who possesses confidence, strength, agility, endurance, intelligence, adaptability, motivation… Need I go on? As you should know, a mascot (such as a Tomcat or Firebird) gives a team a sense of identity and character. The mascot usually exemplifies the traits I mentioned above. As the story goes, Haywood was originally known as the “Cats.” In 1920, there were several players on the team with the last name Thomas, so "Tomcats" began as the name "Thomas Cats." I hope that satisfies your curiosity. In anticipation of your next question or comment, girls’ teams at Haywood are known as “Lady Tomcats,” or "Lady Cats." Good luck to your Firebirds this weekend.
  15. Thanks! Jim Carroll Stadium is a fun place to watch a football game. Actually, I’m a bit jealous of the game atmosphere there!
  16. That is a good deal. Did you notice if the game would be in Brownsville or Savannah?
  17. I don't know anything but the region schedule thanks to the TSSAA. A HHS vs. HCHS game would be a fun one to watch, so I hope that works out. Thanks! The Cats had a great year and it was sad to see them lose. But as you said, they have a lot to be proud of. The Tigers had a great year as well. Unfortunately, PC ended both of our seasons. I congratulate the Firebirds, and I do wish them well in the championship game. SGC will be a great addition to your schedule. The Hornets play hard and they never give up!
  18. Hey @Tigersandcats are you asking if the Tigers and Tomcats are going to play each other next year, or are you saying that they have actually scheduled a game. It would be a great game between two outstanding quarterbacks and teams..
  19. That seems to be fairly obvious since he was not looking for games on the 22nd and 29th of September. I was asking who we will be playing on the 22nd and 29th. If a date is filled, I assume the contract has been signed. I don't see why who we are playing has to be a secret.
  20. According to the TSSAA’s website, here is Haywood’s 2023 region schedule. 1 Fri Aug. 18 2 Fri Aug. 25 3 Fri Sep. 1 4 Fri Sep. 8 Fayette-Ware (R) Away 5 Fri Sep. 15 Obion Co. (R) Away 6 Fri Sep. 22 7 Fri Sep. 29 8 Fri Oct. 6 9 Fri Oct. 13 Requested Open Date 10 Fri Oct. 20 Crockett Co. (R) Home 11 Fri Oct. 27 Dyer Co. (R) Home On Nov. 22, Coach Smith tweeted, "Haywood County is looking for football games on August 18th, August 25th, September 1st, and October 6th. If interested, please DM me or email me at …" That tweet has aroused my curiosity. Who do we have scheduled on September 22 and September 29?
  21. Haywood seniors, you have a lot to be proud of. Over the past 4 years you have been an integral part of Tomcat teams who have: -won 48 games and lost 8 (winning 10 or more games each season) -won four Region 7-4A championships while going undefeated in region play -made four state semifinal appearances and one final appearance -set a season-record scoring average of 49.6 points per game (2022 season) I would like to thank you for your contribution to the annals of Haywood High football. Your talent, athleticism, and accomplishments have made it a pleasure to watch you play, and I’d like to wish you the best in your future endeavors. Haywood underclassmen, you also have a lot of talent and athleticism, and I’d like to thank you for your contribution to Haywood’s success. Continue to work hard in the off season, and I look forward to another exciting and successful season in 2023. I’d also like to thank Coach Smith and staff for your time and hard work. I know this will fall on deaf ears, but I would like to make a plea to the Haywood County School Board and County Commission. I am a strong believer in academics, but athletics also plays a huge part in the success of our students and our school. Athletics brings our community together. I know there is a lot of money to be spent on infrastructure with the arrival of Blue Oval City, and I know improvements need to be made to our school facilities. Please find a way to use some of that money to make improvements to our fieldhouse and athletic facilities (stadium). You won’t regret it.
  22. Congratulations Rebels. Bring home the gold.
  23. Great season Haywood. Congratulations Pearl Cohn.
