  1. Big region contest with lots at stake . Greenbrier playing for a possible region championship and the Jackets playing for a home game in the first round with a win against the Bobcats and a win in the season final at Creekwood. Should be a good ball game with lots at stake.
  2. Hope Jackets don't overlook Portland and they have not played well in the past during the week of fall break , this next stretch of games are very important and it begins this coming Friday with the Panthers.
  3. Jackets are coming off a bye week after two straight losses and some key players out with injuries. Looking for the Jackets to get back into the win column in the first meeting ever between Montgomery Central and Springfield , this starts a stretch of four straight region games as the regular season winds down.
  4. Had this one penciled in as a loss prior to the start of the season , but its looks as though SC has struggled out of the gate , thus I believe the Jackets get it done by a touchdown.
  5. Great win for the Wave , should be great game with Mt. Juliet , go get em !
  6. Looks like its gonna be a great day for football for the first meeting between the Jackets and WH Heritage. I was looking forward to it being at home , but understand about the sod not being firmly rooted. The last time Springfield played a day game on a Saturday was 1993 when the Jackets brought home the AAA State Championship , prior to that it was the 1984 Tobacco Bowl against Clinton. Here's hoping for an injury free game and Go Jackets !!
  7. Weather could be an issue this Friday and could make this one closer than expected. I was impressed with WHH when I seen them in the jamboree and Fairview was a formidable opponent who they lost to last week. I just hope the Jackets don't take them too lightly or it could spell trouble.
  8. Nice win for the Jackets in a game much closer than the score indicates , just glad to get the first win of the season and the opening win at the new Jackets Nest. Good luck to the Wildcats the rest of the season.
  9. Series correction Springfield leads series 51-36-4 .
  10. Old time rivalry that began in 1919 with a Springfield win , no score documented. Over the years it's lost it's luster with the inner city rivals with the Clarksville schools. Back when the season started much later than now it was the final game of the season often played on Thanksgiving Day. This will be the 91st meeting between the Yellow Jackets and Wildcats . Springfield leads the series 50-37-4.
  11. Don't see Clarksville dominating both sides of the ball , Springfield defense is pretty stout. Don't let that Gallatin score mislead you , going into the fourth quarter SHS led 7-3 until some costly turnovers on offense.
  12. It's going to seem strange not playing at Boyce Smith Field and all its history. On to a new beginning against your oldest rival the Clarksville Wildcats. I wasn't expecting Clarksville to defeat Rossview , so I believe they are better than I expected and it should be good game. See you there.
  13. White House by a couple of scores at least.
  14. SHS won in 28 '& 29'. Boyce Smith was 26-8-2-against Gallatin his final season 1971. The other wins came in 1926 ,1975,1980,1981,2014 twice for Springfield. By my unofficial records the series is tied 32-32-2. I believe the 1928 till present to be accurate ,the 1927 season was incomplete having listed a record of 1-4-1 with the lone SHS win coming against Clarksville and defeats to Franklin,Ky. , Nash. Central,Murfreesbro , Peabody(Nashville) and a tie to Elkton, Ky. Calvin Short was 12-2 against SHS. I don't know when Jim Barron became coach at GHS , but I believe he was HC in the 1968 victory when Gallatin reversed the trend in the series , I believe Gene Windham was HC before him. That's all I have lets look forward to the season opener.
  15. The Springfield -Gallatin rivalry started in 1926 , with SHS winning , no score indicated , they did not play again until 1928 when a young coach from Mississippi Boyce Smith arrived at SHS. The two teams played until 1942. They resumed playing each other in 1944 , but the series stopped then and didnt start again until 1952 and continued yearly until 1988. In 2001 the series resumed until 2004 . In 2011 the two teams started playing again and it has been a yearly fixture since then. The Boyce Smith era was dominated by the Jackets . The Jim Barron led Wave got a win in 1968 that turned the series in the Waves favor until his last season as HC in 1975 when Jimbo Pearson got a win over Gallatin ,sadly he died in the spring of 1976. Calvin Short arrived in 1976 at Gallatin and dominated the series , the Jackets did get two upset wins against the Wave in 1980 and 1981, the latter a 9AAA district championship, Jerry Pearson (Jimbo's older brother) was SHS coach then. The Wave has only lost twice to the Jackets since then , in 2014 SHS won in the regular season and in the playoffs. It's an old rivalry that I really enjoy and hope continues.
  16. SHS was originally in the downtown area where the Center is now located . The date it opened ? Someone else will have to dig into that , football however started in 1911 and the team played at Peoples-Tucker School ,a private prep school , that closed and became SHS in 1925.In 1936 that building burned and SHS moved back to the Main St. Location until the new school was constructed and opened in 1939 (the present location of SMS and Boyce Smith Field ). SHS moved to its present location in the fall of 1981.
  17. When Coach Newby was at TPS one of his assistant coaches was former SHS standout Ron Martin , who later was head coach at Smith Co. Until he passed away of cancer at the age of 34. His son Ronnie was a standout player for SHS on three of those teams that played WC in 79 ,80 and 81.Sorry to hear of Coach Newby's passing .
  18. At that time Warren County was a powerhouse with your great RB Jeff Womack, who wound up the states all time leading rusher up until I believe Troy Flemming of BGA surpassed him. The series started in 1979 and ended in 1982 with WC winning 3 of the 4. Both teams were led by some outstanding coaches in SHS alumnus Jerry Pearson and WC Bobby Newby. Both coaches won state championships , Pearson at Dickson Co. and Newby at TPS. The old stadium was a special place with lots of history. I really liked Warren County's stadium also with its pit like atmosphere , at that time it was a tough place to get a win.
  19. Heard the same about the scrimmage , doubt anyone will be the caliber of team like CPA , other than possibly three of the 5A teams on the schedule.
  20. How will the Jackets do this season , any predictions. I haven't seen any scrimmages this fall camp , with the new region I would expect them to be the team to beat , but that's to be seen as the season progresses. The non-region schedule is very tough right off the bat with a trip to Gallatin in the opener with Clarksville , Station Camp and Beech later on. Lets hear some predictions on how you think the season will go, as of right now my thought is 7-3 on the top end or 6-4 at the low end.
  21. Just wondering how some of the teams fall camps are going , any upcoming scrimmages etc. The season is fast approaching .If anyone has the Robertson County jamboree schedule and times please post.
  22. Season is upon us , not much talk about this new Region 5. Will there be an unexpected team to challenge for the top spot or playoff berth?
