  2. If you have watched many games this year you would know that Volunteer and South are both much-improved basketball teams and Tennessee High is 17-3 with losses to 3 good teams, one of which they avenged. Science Hill is clearly the class of the league and one of the best girls teams around here in a long time and are very deserving of all the accolades they are getting but it is unfair to imply that nobody else is any good. The league is not the strongest it has ever been but there is some good stuff going on. As for your last comment, there are always kids not playing that should be, good coaches or no and kids choose not to play for lots of reasons. I guess it's just easier for some people to be negative.
  3. I'd say this news is going to shake things up in Betsy: http://johnsoncitypress.com/Sports/article.php?id=96521
  4. Some good analysis here. I will point out that the loss you referenced for Tennessee High against Jeff Co. was in the regional last year.
  5. Many of the conference teams have played a game or two, what do folks think so far? I know Science Hill rolled over William Blount on the road last night and Tennessee High won a barn burner over Morristown West then beat Elizabethton by 20 tonight. Crockett looks like they played tough before falling in their opener and DB went on the road and won last night. Not sure about the rest. Who has seen something impressive ( I prefer looking at the positives)?
  6. So what did everyone think of the jamboree last night? Who looked impressive? Any surprises?
  7. The jamboree schedule is: Thursday, November 10, 2011 Location: Tennessee High School (Viking Hall) Format: Each game will consist of 2 six minute quarters with 1 minute between quarters. Girls will play the 1st two quarters while the Boys warm-up on the stage court of Viking Hall and then the Boys will play the final two quarters between the two schools involved. Schedule: 5:30-6:15- Tennessee High vs. Dobyns-Bennett (Girls then Boys) 6:15-7:00- Crockett vs. Sullivan Central (Girls then Boys) 7:00-7:30- Three-Point Contest- (1 Girl and 1 Boy from each school) 7:30-8:15- Volunteer vs. Boone (Girls then Boys) 8:15-9:00- South vs. Science Hill (Girls then Boys) There is also a playday at Crockett this Saturday but I haven't seen the schedule. I heard there are a number of teams coming.
  8. Word is that a team just dropped out and now there is a need for one more team to complete the field for the 2011 Doc Maples Holiday Hoops Tournament that will be held December 21-23 at Viking Hall in Bristol. Currently the field includes: Host team Tennessee High, Science Hill, Volunteer, Daniel Boone, Webb School, Wise-Central (Wise, VA), and Cherokee (Atlanta, GA). Interested teams can contact THS head coach Barry Wade at wadeb@btcs.org or assistant coach Charlie Tiller at tillerc@btcs.org or call THS at (423)652-9494 for more information.
  9. Where are different teams going to camp and how is everybody looking?
  10. Does anyone know if Shelbyville is having their team camps this year? These camps have long been a showcase for some of the best girls' basketball in the state and I haven't seen any information about them this year, either on here or on the TSSAA bulletin board. Any info would be appreciated.
  11. So the Region pairings are set: On one side of the bracket: #1 Science Hill will host #4 Seymour #2 Sevier Co. will host #3 Dobyns-Bennett On the other side: #1 Jefferson Co. will host #4 Volunteer #2 Tennessee High will host #3 Cherokee Should be an interesting tournament. Predictions anyone?
  12. Looks like it was a fun night in the IMAC tonight. So the D2 teams will be Seymour, Sevier Co, Cherokee, and Jeff Co. Awesome nightcap in D1 tonight. Tennessee High won a heck of a battle in OT. Great performance by a depleted DB group who showed a lot of heart. The Lady Vikings got some outstanding performances from a number of players. Volunteer made a run at Science Hill in the 3rd quarter before the Lady Toppers pulled away. SH and THS will host Regional games next Friday. DB and Volunteer will hit the road. Should be a fun night on the Hill Friday night.
  13. 6 tickets to the Region 1-AAA were punched tonight. In District 1, Science Hill will face Volunteer in the district semis. Tennessee High and DB will tangle in the other. Cherokee and Jeff Co. advanced as well and await their opponents.
  14. The girls games are MWF. Monday's games are at 7:00 at the home of the higher seed. Wednesday and Friday the games are at 6:00 and 7:30 at SH.
  15. According to the tricitiessports facebook post, Science Hill and Volunteer won the coin tosses today so the bracket should look like this: #1 Science Hill vs. #8 Crockett #4 Sullivan Central vs. #5 Volunteer #2 Tennessee High vs. #7 Boone #3 Dobyns-Bennett vs. #6 Sullivan South Tournament time! Good luck to everyone!
  16. Congrats to the Lady Chiefs! That's a huge win. What time do they take on the Lady Eagles today?
  17. Can anyone confirm the times for the IMAC games Saturday night (Jeff Co @ Knox West and Cherokee @ Seymour)? I'd like to check out some good hoops tomorrow. Also, any word on how Cherokee-Jeff came out tonight?
  18. Those of us in the eastern part of the state would prefer not to have to go all the way to Memphis for the state tournament. It's much too far, not to mention it would be prohibitive for fans. Keep it in the middle of the state. Cookeville would be fine but the 'Boro is my choice.
  19. Good night of basketball and a good night for the Big 8 at the Doc Maples Holiday Hoops Invitational at Viking Hall last night. Boone made a great comeback and beat Archbishop Carroll by 2. Tennessee High started slow then blew out Sullivan East. Volunteer then made a nice comeback and beat Lawrence Co. KY. Today's schedule looks like this: 3:30 Sullivan East vs. Lawrence Co. 5:00 Archbishop Carroll vs. John Battle 6:30 Tennessee High vs. Volunteer 8:00 Elizabethton vs. Daniel Boone Should be a fun day.
  20. What are these numbers supposed to be? They're certainly not up to date records. DB has played more than 2 games. They aren't nonconference records as Tennessee High was 3-3 out of conference (now 4-3) at the time of this post. And if it was supposed to show what teams did before conference play started, Science Hill didn't lose a game until they played Tennessee High. So what is the point?
  21. The Lady Vikings didn't seem to be quivering too much.
  22. The Lady Vikings just got back from camp at Vanderbilt. I know some of you will be disappointed, but no "drama" to report, just a lot of winning. They went 7-1, losing a 4 point game to a team from Alabama that were state runners-up in their division last year. They also beat a couple of good teams from Georgia, including one from Atlanta that has two post players that Vandy appears to be recruiting. THS heads to Shelbyville next weekend and should get some good tests there as well. Of course, all these references to drama on here are kinda funny as this seems to be a pretty tight group and apparently this drama problem hasn't been too bad as THS has won 5 of the last 6 conference titles and 4 of the last 6 district titles but that's okay. My other favorite recent post was on the other board where it was said Coach Wade is a "fair enough coach, but the girls run that team." In his first year, the team went 28-5, won the conference, and went to the State Tournament. Then, they lose all 5 starters and 8 of the 10 from the rotation and go 23-9, win the District Championship, and come up one point short of the Substate.. Not to mention, in his 3 years as the JV coach his team went something like 75-4. I'd say that's "fair enough." He has been blessed with some excellent players but has done a great job molding them. Also, you can often tell the effect a coach has by how hard his/her teams play and there aren't many teams around here that play harder. As for the second part of that statement, are you at practice? The best coaches do most of their work there. A coach who is ranting and raving during the games often has to do that because they didn't do a good enough job preparing in practice. Also, I think Science Hill should be very good and their games with the Lady Vikings should be lots of fun. DB should also be tough. Volunteer, Boone (who is really well-coached), and South should be better and Kestner will make Centrall a tough matchup. It's going to be a heck of a fun year for girls' basketball in the Big 8.
  23. You are certainly entitled to your opinion and I am not close to their program although I have seen them play on a number of occassions the last couple of years. However, to say that because they have had talent, he has not had to do "much coaching" is absurd. There are lots of teams with talent that do not succeed. Also, there is much more to coaching than Xs and Os. Getting to the state semifinals two years in a row is an unbelievable accomplishment and I find it hard to believe that he just rolled the balls out and they had all that success. Teams that win have talent. Not all teams with talent win. People make the argument about Phil Jackson and how he always has had the greatest players and he wouldn't have won if he didn't have Jordan or Shaq or Kobe. That's true but how many rings did those guys win without him? (1 by Shaq when Pat Riley was his coach) UConn has far and away the most talent in women's college basketball right now. Does that mean Geno isn't coaching? Coach Dyer is a good man and a very good coach and he is doing an admirable thing that a lot of coaches wouldn't do. South Greene will hopefully get someone who will do a great job in his stead. However, that person is going to have big shoes to fill.
  24. Yes, the regional brackets are set up like this: D2 #1 vs D1 #4 D1 #2 vs D2 #3 D1 #1 vs D2 #4 D2 #2 vs D1 #3 ----- Someone finally addressed the elephant in the room... and I think it's definitely been a thought of several coaching staffs - some of who are still playing and some who are at home. I think you boys may be getting a little ahead of yourselves. It's not like Science Hill and Tennessee High, while not on the level with MW, are exactly chopped liver. Both of those teams will be tough to beat on their home floors. Both of those gyms are tough places to play. I'm a Big 8 guy & have only seen East once this year, but when I did, DB beat them by 20 in Morristown. SH & TH have both beaten DB lately. I have also seen teams, mostly on the boys' side, not exactly playhard in the 3rd place game to try to avoid a juggernaut 1 seed, usually SH up here, and the loss of momentum has come back to bite them. I would tell anyone thinking about taking this "strategy" to tread lightly. While Herm Edwards says you play to win the game; winning a consolation game isn't the ultimate goal...prolonging your season as long as possible is. While it may call into play integrity, I say blame the system - not the situation or those involved. They are merely following the set-up of the system and playing to it. Now if East would've upset West on Friday; that brings into play an even more interesting question.... The loser of the championship game would've been in a likely better position than the winner.
  25. Tonight's Tennessee High @ Daniel Boone games have been moved up an hour to 5:30 and 7:00. There will be no JV games.
