  1. ^^Best comment I have seen on here....probably ever.
  2. Maybe the kid told the coach his arm wasn't feeling right/good. That's possible after a long season and then the post season run.
  3. I think that's way too much for a high school kid, 15 innings! Then the coach throws the catcher for the remaining three and then in the 2nd game for the full 7 innings. The catcher's arm must have been jello the next day.
  4. I'm just curious, but does anyone on here know the actual rule? When do you call a batter out for being out of the box? Is it one foot? both feet? Is it where the foot is when contact is made? What if no contact is made? What if the toes are out and the heel is in? What if the batter takes his stance with his back foot on the chalk line(assuming there is one)? Just curious to see the answers, I bet we get a lot of different ones. When I umpired, this was the one thing that fans would yell and scream about constantly, all the freaking time. I'm standing a foot away, I can see very clearly if he is out or in, and yes I called a batter out for this infraction on two separate occassions. It was actually the same player, but two different games and actually two different seasons. Let's hear those answers!
  5. So, they had a double elimination tourney to determine the two teams to play for the title and then the title game is a one and done. That seems cheap. Oh well, good luck to both!
  6. Am I missing something here? I thought this was a double elimination tournament. The loss to Lewis was their first loss, right?
  7. Surprised by that score. I figured CW would handle Lewis with no problems.
  8. Hoop23, you have obviously never seen the test. They ask questions about the most obscure rules. The questions are very confusing and a lot seem to have multiple answers or none of the available answers seem to be completely accurate. It is open book, but I think that may be due to the fact that umpires take it on their own and how could they enforce not having the book. That and I've been told they want umpires to open the book and locate these obsecure rules and read a little bit. Part 1 exam is for new umpires, must make an 80. Part 2 is for all umpires, must make an 80, and those who pass are available for postseason. Now, you say "open book? making an 80 should be a breeze!" Well, I've taken it and took two hours, looking up every question, in the rule book, case book and umpires manual and I still missed two! I haven't been able to umpire the past few years, but I still keep in touch and the test hasn't changed. I would love to see the people that scream and holler at blue about the rules take the test. Most would realize they don't know jack, most coaches would probably find themselves in that boat too. A lot of umpires might too. I don't think there is an umpire out there that wouldn't say "yeah, we've got some that aren't up to par and a few that ain't even close." I know I umpired with some, they were usually new, but some we're veterans. You'd see them on your schedule and cringe a little bit. I think the number one cause of poor officiating is the lack of bodies. Been around this for a long time, associations need guys that are willing to put the effort in to do a good job. We need people that are passionate about the game, like Iyellatumps, to step up and help the game out a little bit. Schedules and life make it hard, but it's no different for the ones out there doing a good job or a crappy job. EDconner, you state that you're not smart enough to umpire, but you don't have to be smart, just a little crazy. I don't think there's a high school coach out there that wants an umpire to call a zone by the book. In my experience most like a more liberal zone. Especially the outside portion of the zone. Morden bats are so amazing these days a kid should have no problem with a ptich a little off the plate. You come across very few pitchers in high school baseball, most just throw the ball and need a bigger zone. Call the zone by the book and you'll be out there for three hours and the coaches will wish for a different umpire the next game. Baseball is a game for human beings, humans screw up. The best umpires will have bad games. I do believe your lying to yourself if you don't think there are some really crappy umpires out there, but there are just as many, probably more, that are in it for the right reasons and want to give it their best.
  9. Why aren't all the games being played at Dickson? They are the #1 seed, right?
  10. Dickson head coach Ray Ragan was let go yesterday.
  11. Hate to hear that. Ray was a great coach, knows the game, and a great person. He was put in a tough situation this year with the new extremely competitive district and a young team. DCHS has only had two coaches since '97, Shelby Rye being the other.
  12. I was expecting something more juicy than that! Other than the field umpire approaching a dugout to confront a coach and/or player, doesn't sound like much trouble. Questionable calls will be blown up more so in an elimination game. Close calls always piss someone off. People gripe about umpires not going to their partner to review a call, but then explode with anger when they do and the call gets overturned. Clinton coach needs some discipline if he followed the umpires off the field, that's not good at all, very poor leadership. Field umpire needs some too for approaching a dugout to confront a coach. What is it with baseball out in the East side of the state? Lots of problems with hot headed coaches, umpires, fans and players. The umpire didn't technically do anything wrong by saying "time" instead of "balk". The ball is dead immediately.
  13. Judging by the screen name, I don't imagine you're on here to tell us how great the umpires were. Please inform us.
  14. There is no slide rule. A player must only attempt to avoid contact. Sounds like either the umpire was sucked into the same false belief of the "must slide rule", like countless others, or there is more to the situation that you included in your post. A fielder cannot occupy the base line without the ball. If the fielder was moving up the line and contact was made with the runner, the umpire may have decided the runner could have avoided the contact and instead purposefully and malicious contacted the fielder.
  15. Hickman thought the kid last night gave them a great chance at victory and would have, had it not been for one bad inning. Coaches were also thinking about what if they did lose and had to play East. You can throw all records out the window when East and Centerville meet. East will throw their ace and bring their A game tonight. I don't think there is much difference in Hickman's #1 and #2, so why not take the risk and then have your ace throwing in a elimination game. Especially since they'll get two days rest over the weekend.
  16. If you could change one thing about high school baseball in Tennessee, what would it be? Anything from pre-season to post-season, anything in the whole entire high school baseball universe. Try to keep it to just one thing, somebody may be listening that could change that one thing.
  17. Creekwood 15 E. Hickman 0
  18. I just reviewed the umpires manual and it doesn't say either way. Just says the umpires should leave together, these did not.
  19. Anybody have a schedule for the tourney?
  20. Is there another video out there that I have not seen yet? I watched one and didn't see any umpire acting any where near out of line. After the punch was thrown the field ump did get more agitated, but who the heck wouldn't? I'm sure he will have a disscusion with someone in Hermitage about being the bigger man and not acting out because of some kid. The coach needs some serious discipline as well. He should have gotten his players away from the umpires exit and tried to do some crowd control. He knew things were heated. Too many coaches out there have the maturity level of a teenager when calls don't go there way. I hate to see innocent players being punished because of the one hot head, but apparently there are a lot of issues with this school and they have seemingly gone unaddressed by administrators. The coach needs the harshest punishment, no doubt.
  21. This kind of insanity happens more than you would think. I remember a few years ago a 16 year old that was umpiring some summer rec. ball was killed by a parent over the game. The parent hit the kid with a bat. I can't recall where this happened. TSSAA will hopefully make an example out of this kid and anyone else that may have helped escalate the situation. I hate it for the innocent kids though.
  22. Dickson and Franklin split a DH at Dickson. 6-2 and 5-6, 2nd game ended on a sac. squeeze.
  23. Dickson and Franklin split a DH at Dickson. 6-2 and 5-6, 2nd game ended on a sac. squeeze.
  24. Dickson-Independence is PPD, play a DH tomorrow.
  25. Brentwood 11 - Dickson Co 0 F; Brentwood 9 - Dickson Co 3 F I heard they played a double on Monday, at Brentwood, due to some damage at Dickson's field from the ice storm. I heard Dickson has the field fixed and will play there today, weather permitting.
