  1. And so starts yet another round of the ole "It's nearly impossible to beat a good team twice in the same season" debate......... Until somebody knocks off West I'm staying with the Rebels, but bet it will be close like last time
  2. We can generally follow the score here on the T, but hopefully someone @ the game can keep this thread updated with hilites, color commentary, etc. as the game progresses. Pulling for the Rebels, get out there & get it done guys
  3. Not sure which team you support, but you have to understand that the Tri-cities fans are just as passionate about our teams as are fans from the other parts of the state... And that leads to so much pent-up frustration amongst Tri-cities fans because we see other non-Tri schools who are very serious about football and building a championship program. And we Tri fans all know deep down that it is NEVER going to happen here. So yeah I suppose all of us sometimes take out our angst online here from time to time. I no longer care about the playoffs for my team, instead just try to enjoy the regular season, win more games than we lose, beat Crockett each year, try to win R1 5A, stuff like that.
  4. That's pretty interesting about how Florida is doing classifications, wonder if something similar would work in Tennessee? Almost like you could have an M-class (Metro) and the R-class (Rural) separate championships, much like the privates have their own playoffs now. Then it would come down to semantics about the schools on the border between M & R. I honestly cannot see the TSSAA ever making that drastic of a change so most likely nothing changes in TN unless they hear that FL has 8 classes, they might do that so more schools get the participation trophy.
  5. If not for you-know-who that 2012 DB team could have made the state title game without a doubt, they were the best I have ever seen in the Tri-cities
  6. Remember when all the games got called for lightning during a couple of week's span..... There's no way that same type of thing would happen due to fires is there? Or have you guys just been kidding around about it?
  7. BC is just so loaded this year, but I never count Maryville out until they are.
  8. Careful, some of the DB faithful can be a bit sensitive about that... But to their point, even college football awarded a national champion based on media vote until about 10 years ago. You are correct though in that other than Tennessee High none of the Tri-cities big schools have ever played for a state title and they never will. Not sure school size has that much to do with it if the other pieces are not in place to build a championship team. DB can always beat up on the much smaller local schools just based on nothing more than having better athletes due to their student population, but where they get exposed is going up against schools who take football seriously. Science Hill is always in the top 10 biggest state schools but they have never even come close to a championship. Tri-cities football is a lot of fun locally and we have a lot of passionate players and fans, but in terms of the playoffs it's a dead end.
  9. Tennessee High (currently 5A) from Bristol TN won state in 1971 & 1972, but there were no 5A/6A classes back then so not sure if that counts
  10. 99% of the time that is correct. Exceptions I can think of would be the 2012 DB team and 2014 Science Hill. Of course both of those teams got obliterated in the 3rd round by you-know-who by a combined score of 86-20
  11. Her sister wouldn't do it, but DollyWood
  12. COMMON OPPONENTS: Green Hill (Riverdale won 50-13, Cookeville won 28-20) Siegel (Riverdale won 49-7, Cookeville won 35-14) OPPONENTS WHO ARE STILL ALIVE IN THE PLAYOFFS: Riverdale 5A Beech (Riverdale won 16-14) 5A Henry County (Riverdale lost 21-20) 6A Germantown (Riverdale lost 41-32) 6A Oakland (Riverdale won 25-24) 6A Smyrna (Riverdale won 36-0) Cookeville 4A Stone Memorial (Cookeville lost 25-20) 6A Mt. Juliet (Cookeville lost 38-14) SIGNATURE WINS: 6A Oakland (Riverdale won 25-24) EDGE: Gotta think Riverdale takes this one, they have gone up against much tougher opponents all season and done pretty well.
  13. This one has the feel of closeness to it, I picked AC just to troll some of my Betsy friends. But it's probably a tossup more than anything. If it's really played @ ETSU I might just drop by, never seen AC in person
  14. It's the same for NET 5A. None of the big schools in NET start off the season with a championship in mind, it's more like beating your biggest rival, or trying to win Region 1, or whatever. That is where I find myself as a fan now as well, at some point you have to just realize that it's never going to happen, so I go out and support my team during the regular season and don't worry too much about the playoffs.
  15. Common opponents: Carter (AC won 49-0, EHS won 38-0) Science Hill (AC lost 26-23, EHS won 27-7) Sullivan East (AC won 49-0, EHS won 47-0) Games against teams who are still alive in the playoffs: 4A Gibbs (AC won 55-6) 5A Clinton (AC won 28-14) 5A Knox West (Ac lost 8-7) 5A Powell (AC lost 35-21) 6A Bearden (AC lost 45-27) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4A Greeneville (EHS lost 23-13) 5A Mo West (EHS won 20-7) Signature wins: EHS - beat local 6A schools DB & Science Hill, both nearly 3x the size of Elizabethton AC - not a win, but came within 1 point of Knox West, so perhaps a morale victory Bottom line: Seems like AC has played a much tougher schedule, but EHS fans might make a reasoned/logical argument against that. I have not seen AC play and only saw EHS play once against a mediocre DB team. Edge goes to AC in this one but never count Elizabethton out until the final buzzer
  16. You're right, with the Tri-cities big schools it always seems to be a "well if this, or if that...." type of scenario. I remember that 2012 DB team was smoking everybody coming & going and certainly looked like the first time in forever that they might make it to the big dance, then they got badly out-coached by you-know-who in the 3rd round and lost by 20 points. As you say, if last year's Boone team was playing in this year's 5A landscape they would have a good shot. I don't know, there is something magical that happens when you cross the Knox County line every time. Maybe one day we will see the perfect storm materialize for a Tri team but I'm not holding my breath.
  17. I guess now we will see if the old adage holds true..... "It's hard to beat a good team twice in the same season"
  18. Using A=1, B=2, etc..... BEARDENBULLDOGS = 141 = 1 + 4 + 1 = 6 JEFFERSONCOUNTYPATRIOTS = 314 = 3 + 1 + 4 = 8 So you are correct, JC squeaks by in a close one by a score of 8-6
  19. You nailed it my friend. "If you aim at nothing, you'll hit it every time." ~Zig Ziglar
  20. I do not think either of these teams are state championship caliber this year, but someone has to win it. Can't see it being a run-away either way, as of now this one is too close to call.
  21. The big Tri-cities schools play football mainly for fun. Now yes, the guys are out there giving it their all on the field, but I'm talking about the entire package, the big schools are NOT serious about football like they are in Knoxville & beyond. Over the last few years my attitude has changed a lot, I now don't even consider the playoffs, just think about trying to win each game and win Region 1 5A, that's really all that matters because once the playoffs start it's over anyway. In the foreseeable future there will not be a single 5A/6A team get past the Knox County line.
  22. There are actually 6 teams, one did not make the playoffs this year
  23. Betsy won 38-0, but they are 4A, this is a 5A/6A thread
  24. Well, how did the Tri-cities do tonight? All 5 teams are one-and-done, losing by a combined score of 180-30. At least Tennessee High and Science Hill scored, so hats off to them. Is anything ever going to change in the Tri-cities? Nah..... someone bookmark this thread for the 1st round 2024
