  1. I guess you can hope it is an actual tournament this year. Daniel Boone played in it the past two years and due to some no shows at the girls tourney they only had 6 teams so they played 2 games as pool play and that decided what 2 teams played in the 'finals' but we never figured out what really got teams into the final especially when teams were 1-1. Good luck.
  2. I'll have to disagree. If you knew the history of the tournament to its beginnings I don't think you would make some of your assumptions about who should be in the Arby's. I don't know all the specific details but in the early days there was a group of local schools that were loyal to the tournament and therefore helped get the tournament off the ground. I don't know the reasons why the directors picked the schools that they did in the beginning but it was their right. The tournament grew to where it is now and a lot of other schools in the area would love to play but there is just not room. They did add the round of play-in games to get more schools in. You picked on Elizabethton, East and Daniel Boone as teams unworthy of Arby's. I don't believe Elizabethton and East have been in the tournament every year but Boone has. In fact Boone won the event in 1984 and was a thorn in the side for a lot of visiting teams over the years. After Science Hill, I would guess that Boone, D-B and Tennessee High have been the most successful local teams in the Arby's. I guess if you are going to make statements about teams not being able to win their conference we better eliminate all the Big 9 schools except SH & D-B from being in the Arby's. There are a lot of factors in putting on a tournament and deciding who they want to invite. Quality teams, fan support and tournament loyalty are just a few things that may be considered in developing a tourney. Some of the visiting "powerhouse" teams have not been very good teams but perhaps they had a marquee player that would draw fans. I don't agree with all the teams (either local or visiting) in the Arby's but it is not my tournament. Tennessee High has done an outstanding job with the tournament and it has grown into the monster that everyone wants to play. If you think that there are other local teams that could benefit from an Arby's type tournament then put one together. I think you will find that it is easier said than done.
  3. If Tenn & South were to win wouldn't the "re-match" take place at South. That said, I think that M West and South will take their games. Then who would get home field?
  4. Three of Boone's RB were hurt in the Volunteer game. Harmon went out on the 2nd Qtr fumble and did not return. Jarrett played almost the entire game and went out on the last series that Boone had to take the 14-7 lead. Dye got hurt by a illegal hit on the Vol 41 yard pass play on their tying drive in regulation. I think that Boone missed Jarrett(DB) on the Vol scoring drive and missed both Jarrett & Dye on both sides in OT. Would it have made a difference in OT? Maybe, maybe not. The fact is that both Boone & Volunteer played poorly for 3 1/2 quarters. Finally Boone took the lead and the way the game had gone it seemed like it might be enough for the win but Cradic looked like a whole different QB on the tying drive and Volunteer got it into OT and the rest is history. Neither team looked good that night. Boone let a very dangerous & hungry Volunteer team hang around and the Falcons made the plays in OT and Boone did not. If Tennessee jumps on Volunteer early I think it will be an easy Viking win but if Volunteer can hang around until the 2nd half it will be a tossup.
  5. They are all the same. There is not one region that has a better regional winning percentage than 50%.
  6. Interesting. The Asheville, NC 7 area high schools (Buncombe Co) all have field turf installed in the last 18 months. The AD at one school that I saw told me it cost almost $700,000 per school. One school was a little cheaper because it has a great view and the turf company uses it in their ads. They cut the head FB coaches from 12 months to 10 months to help pay for it was my understanding. With all the use in Morristown it probably would be a good thing for them but I just don't see anyone else in the region doing it unless money fell from the sky.
  7. I don't belive old MuddDoggs is a Boone fan. I think he is some poor sole trying t stir the pot. The real Boone fans know that the Falcons could take a peck at the ole' Blazers.
  8. You misunderstand me. I firmly believe that the better the level of competition in the league the better chance to advance and perhaps do something on the state level. But the fans must understand that due to the increased level of play their favorite team might not be 7-0 or 6-1 in the conference every year but might be 4-3 but be better prepared for the playoffs. Would fans accept a 6-4 record as acceptable in a tough league for the top dog? Just trying to get folks to think about it in a different way. I know that Pless did not follow Rider directly but the Cyclone fans keep comparing him to the Rider days. However, I was making a general comment about coaching situations overall and not the Betsy situation. I have no real knowledge about that. HighSchoolFanatic stated that football is 90% coaching. Please, that is a little high don't you think. What about the coach (Michigan, I belive) that had won several state titles and had a successful program but had gone to a new school. After 4-5 games this year he went to the school board had the rest of the season cancelled because he feared for the safety of the players. But he was only getting beat like 40-0 which is not something that I would think is really bad like 80-0. If coaching was 90% why not continue on. You have to have some talent to go with it. I'm done with this thread. I really did not make my comments aimed directly at the Cyclones but maybe it will do them a little good to find out what some of those rising programs in the MLC used to endure.
  9. I am disappointed when I see some of the very negative comments concerning coaches and athletes whether it is Elizabethton or any other school. Everybody wants to be an expert at telling what the problem is. I don't pretend to know all the factors involved with the Cyclone program but I thought that I would throw out a few things to consider. 1) Coach - A totally thankless job even if you are winning but don't you dare lose. And you better not follow a legend with a successful program because you are going to be compared with the legend even if the talent level is not there. I would not want to be the guy who follows Graham Clark at D-B. Yes, a good coach can make a difference but they are not miracle workers. Last year Boone goes 9-3 (for a program that has been a .500 team over time) with in the best winning % in school history. However, I overhear a comment in the grocery the day after being eliminated in the playoffs by South criticizing the coach for what this person considered a bad call that may have cost Boone the game. They were wanting the entire coaching staff replaced. Can you believe that? Again why would you want to be a head coach? 2) Players - Believe it or not players can be turned off to a coaching staff not just by the actions of the coach but by the opinion they have developed of the coach. Many times that opinion has been swayed by the constant badmouthing of the staff by parents and other fans. Over time, kids will believe everything that hear and will either just not play(I may respect them more) and play with no heart. There becomes a time that even the very best coach cannot overcome the negativity being fed the kids by others. 3) Other Teams - You better pay attention to this one. I see in a lot of these different threads about the different regions being glad that some of the weaker teams in their league are playing better. Other regions brag about how their region is so much better than others. Guess what? If you looked at the overall league record of every league (don't include non-league games) the record is .500. Every league has the same number of wins as losses. Now if you take the Mountain Lakes Conference, Johnson County has stepped it up in recent years, Sullivan East is much improved and now Unicoi County has notched a couple of league wins. Every team in the league wants to improve. But if they improve where are their wins going to come from? The wins are going to coming form the teams like Elizabethton, Tennessee High, and South that have been the traditional powers of the conference. So now the weaker teams have improved and started to knock some folks off and then the traditional powers start to drop in record. The internet posters come out in force and start criticizing the coaches and even players and then the negativity starts a even greater downward spiral. The traditional powers could even still be close the level that they have played at over the years but the bottom dwellers have now improved and evened things out and so records may not be the thing that they once were. For teams like South, Tennessee, and Elizabethton to maintain their lofty perches they need SC, JC, SE, and UC to maintain their low level and stay at the bottom of the league. Think about it.
  10. The regionals for Region 1 (both AAA & A-AA) of which both Chuckey-Doak and Gatlinburg-Pittman are members is held at Daniel Boone High School.
  11. At the Gray exit you have McDonals's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Subway, La Carreta (mexican), a couple of Japanese/Chinese places. Also Pal's & Pizza Hut but they are drive thru. If you go one more exit towards JC to Boones Creek, you will find Cracker Barrell & Wendy's right off the exit. I think there is a Waffle House also. Then if you go on one more exit to State of Franklin Rd in JC, you'll have a choice of a lot. Outback, Chili's, Atlanta Bread, Panera Bread, Logan's, McD, Chick-fil-la, Fuddruckers, and Cheddars are all within half mile of exit. That should give you a good idea of places.
  12. I don't think it will be. I think that the Boone-Crockett game is the only one scheduled for Boone on the TV. I don't know what game is but I would bet D-B/Secier Co.
  13. Couple of things concerning Boone facility Parking is okay at Boone. JROTC does a good job directing to open areas. I'm sure the grass area on the far end of school will be used if necessary. However, just before you get to Boone you will pass the Fossil Museum under construction. The next entrance on your left will be Crossroad Christian Church and they try to get visitors to turn in here and park at the church. There is a ticket booth on this side also close to visitors stands. Seating is probably around 4000. I seem to remember that the home stands can handle around 3000. I don't know what the visitors side is rated but probably around 1000. For you folks that normally are in the press box I'll give you a warning that we are limited in space. We can't accommodate every paper and radio station(especially when they bring 3-4 folks) in the area. We generally have four workers (PA, Stats, Spotters) and most of the time one radio guy. We probably can only handle about 5 more in chairs. At the Sullivan Central game we were in there like sardines with a radio guy and 4 reporters and they were 0-3. Coaches for each team have a separate room. Just a warning.
  14. Just showing my age but when Boone was in the OLD IMAC in the early 80's I believe West was at Boone.
  15. Excellent game for the most part. I saw that long run by Graham for the TD set up by the runs to Ottinger up the middle. I was thinking to myself that Boone better watch out for the quick backs and saw Graham in the backfield and no one to cover any cuts to the outside and then bam... Cocke County is quicker than I thought they would be especially on defense. Their offense needs some work and has potential. Boone looked a little sluggish at times. If Cameron was sick that explains some things. I would not like to play Cocke County again this year. They are going to beat some folks the rest of the way.
  16. Everyone can say that - so I will. I predict that every school has a chance to win the state in the next 5 years!
  17. Perfect. Thanks. Perhaps I'll see you there.
  18. Hey PTSportsWriter, Do you have access to a roster for Cocke County? I'd like to get a jump on things before I head down the road tonight. Thanks.
  19. They are referring to Sullivan Central.
  20. Over 500 replies in the post. What did you folks do before the internet? I guess all anyone needs in life now is a tent (keep the rain off), a lazy boy, computer, and high speed internet...................
  21. So you were the one with the bell. I was in the pressbox keeping stats for Boone and am now deaf from that bell. I have a lot of friends at North and I was also disappointed with their crowd. North fans, you have a good team and should support them.
  22. Yes, Daniel Boone was 6-0 during the 1973 season (3rd season of program). I was a freshman then. I think we also went 5-0 one other time but not entirely sure about that and will have to do some research.
  23. Three things 1) One game at a time 2) Cocke County is a region opponent 3) Boone was 6-0 in 1973.
