  1. Wilson County School Board met Saturday to discuss next year in regards to budget and the income shortfall due to lower tax revenue. One item proposed was the elimination of ALL coaching stipends for both High School and Middle School. Anyone else seeing this discussion in their county?
  2. I took a couple of pictures of the 1949 football squad from his yearbook this morning but can't figure out how to post them since they are on my computer and not on the internet. Here is the link to that yearbook http://www.utm.edu/webshare/library/yearbooks/pdfs/1950.pdf The picture on the athletics page of the football player standing on the map of TN looking up is my dad
  3. I believe legally no. The reason is that the schools are co-located but have separate principals unlike a 7-12th grade school under one administration. The MS students are not enrolled at either high school just in the same building.
  4. They used to. My dad played on the 1949 Volunteer Junior college team. That JUCO would become UT Martin some years later.
  5. Not trying to sway anyone's opinion just providing food for thought Well its kind of a big deal if you break down a couple of data points. People will latch onto the idea that the flu kills more people in a year than the COVID-19 virus does. Well statistically since we don't have years of data to project COVID-19 numbers lets project on what we do know. Seasonal flu kills 1 in 1,000 people where as current data on COVID-19 is estimated to kill 10 in 1,000. So COVID-19 is deadlier than the Flu as of right now. The Flu death rate is 0.01% but COVID-19 death rate in the US is about 1.5% (8.4% in Italy but they play that brand of football where they frown on using your hands on the ball so lets stick to the US numbers) According to the CDC numbers reported from 2/1/2020 to 4/11/2020 there have been 5,228 Flu deaths and 13,130 COVID-19 deaths. COVID-19 is also more infectious than the flu. With the flu the average person will infect about 1.3 persons whereas with COVID-19 that number is around 2.25 people. As an individual it doesn't seem like a big difference but over a 90 day period that one person by spreading the infection ends up infecting 2,184,164 people. That same scenario with COVID-19 infects just short of 4,000,000 people. On 22/01/2020 the CDC reported 1 COVID-19 case in the US, and as of 18/04/2020 there were 720,630 cases and every day is more than the day reported before. The most alarming part to me about the COVID-19 virus is that it is reported to initially be an animal virus and at some point last year mutated and was passed by animal to a human where it mutated again and is now passed person to person. This evolution through natural selection could prove to be difficult to get ahead of initially but like so many other virus outbreaks only time will prove if we acted appropriately. Just for Context here are some US Virus events for comparison. Remember 1 reported case in January this year and we have 13,130 in about 3 months 1793 Yellow Fever between August 1 and November 9.approximatley 5,000 deaths 1906-1907 Typhoid fever approximately 10,771 deaths 1918-1920 Spanish Flu approximately 675,000 deaths (BTW it wasn't until 1942 that we developed a vaccine) “mother of all pandemics” "Life in much of America came to a standstill in October 1918 as municipalities shuttered public gathering places such as schools, churches, theaters and saloons" 1921-1925 Diphtheria approximately 15,520 deaths 1916-1955 Polio approximately 3,145 deaths
  6. Nah DS. I didn't want to make it sound like it against your POV just wanted to throw out a line and see what bites.
  7. I'm bored and you are a great person so let's poke the bear with a pointed stick. You are correct but are presenting only part of the issue and that makes your thoughts appear out of context with the responsibilities of the US Gov’t. What you are espousing is from the roots of American democracy. These roots spawned from documents like the Magna Carta, the petition of Rights, the English Bill of Rights and the Virginia Bill of Rights. You also have to examine the writings of Philosophers Thomas Hobbs, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau as well as a handful of others. Why you may ask….because the people that wrote our Constitution that limited government power did. There is this concept in government based through Federalist principles called the Social Contract. A Social Contract is basically an agreement between members of the community and the Sovereign or the government. OK SO WHAT! Well in laymans terms we the people agree to give up some of our power or freedom in exchange for government services and protection. In the US Constitution’s Preamble it is written that we agree to this Constitution for several reasons but the one that applies here is to promote the General Welfare. Welfare in its original intent in 1787 was meant as health, happiness, or prosperity; well-being. The same way that the Government sets food standards so you cannot be sold poisoned food the Government can set standards of behavior. Your observations in absolution are not new. In June 1919 the Harvard Law Review published an article by legal philosopher Zechariah Chafee, Jr. titled “Freedom of Speech in War Time” The argument about rights and freedom was analogized by that of the man who was arrested for swinging his arms and hitting another in the nose, and asked the judge if he did not have a right to swing his arms in a free country. The Judge simply stated “Your right to swing your arms ends just where the other man’s nose begins.” Your right to move about freely during a time of National emergency simply isn’t an entitlement and in fact ends because other people are potentially affected. You surrender that ability in exchange for the Government assisting with the health of all Americans and to restore Friday night football sooner rather than later. I just had to try and steer this back to football somehow. In Conclusion don’t tug on Superman’s cape, Never shoot a larger caliber target with a small caliber round, and never blitz the backside of a flexbone offense.
  8. It is pretty much what east coast school already do. I've coached in VA, MD, and NY and we started school after Labor Day so that is a viable option with precedence. Rumblings are that TDOE not TSSAA is considering an after Labor Day school start.

  10. Whitwell just posted the job to the TSSAA board 18 hours ago. What are your thoughts about why they would do this if they already have a person in mind Whitwell High School (Whitwell, TN) 18 hours old Whitwell High School is now taking applications for Head Football Coach. Teaching position is To Be Determined. If interested, please send your resume to Teena Casseday: tcasseday@mctns.net.
  11. The Principal is Kevin Dawson and I remember the school dropping football starting with a W. Coach Link is the new RBS head coach so I know they are planning on a 2020 season
  12. Green Hills Principal told me they were playing a varsity schedule this fall. He stated that they were trying to buy into a schedule of a school that dropped football.
  13. Retired from the Army in '17 to be a full time coach.
  14. https://marioncountyschools.schoolinsites.com/employmentopportunitiesandapplications Head Football Coach- Whitwell High School is currently accepting applications for the Head Football Coach position. 15. Instead of two middle school feeders for Mount Juliet (MJ) they have divided them so Green Hill (GH) has a dedicated feeder as well as MJ having one dedicated feeder. Wilson Central (WC) now has a similar sized middle school as a feeder that opened this year. The physical zone did also change for MJ quite a bit (smaller) since GH is relatively close. It didn't effect WC much.
  16. Looks like a good hire Barry Daniel 25 years of coaching experience hird head coaching assignment as he was the head coach at Clements (AL) for three seasons (2007-09) at Cherokee (AL) in 2006. overall coaching record is 25-28 and while he was at Clements he posted a 18-15 record and led the program to the playoffs all three seasons (Class 3A in 2007 and 2A in 2008 and 2009). As the Defensive Coordinator at Brooks, the Lions made the playoffs nine of 10 seasons, won four region titles and they are coming off a 6-6 season. Before going to Brooks, Daniel spent a decade as an assistant coach at Russellville (AL) high school.
  17. Interviews were done and are complete. An offer was been made but not yet accepted. The potential HC does have district ties. It is not my place to release any details so out of respect for him and all parties involved I would prefer to leave it at that level of detail.
  18. I have not heard a word but was wondering the same thing.
  19. I told mama that it's not bad but you've got what has been a successful college coach watching over his talented son and as anticipated the expectations are high. Anything less cold negatively impact little Simpsons future. I like Coach Simpson and he treated my son fairly when Simpson arrived to UTM in the mid 2000's. The HC position has the potential to develop into a job that has a 8 mile screwdriver stuck in it. No matter how much potential little Simpson shows the supporting cast has to be there or he risks not being able to showcase his talents.
  20. Could it be because of the QB that the job isn't appealing? Not that he is a bad young man but there could be external factors and constraints that some head coaches don't want.
  21. It looks like the HC is there for 2020 however they have advertised for two assistants.
  22. I didn't know anything about York so I watched the OCT SC game. Looks like they run a triple option flexbone run scheme. Easy fixes if the next coach keeps it. IMA- Splits were too narrow, Didn't look to block the option traditionally. (You have to be sure and double the action key and get movement) Also looked to have some minor footwork issues . Lastly York looked to run out of a unbalanced OL surface flex formation as their base. One traditional characteristic of the flexbone is that a balanced formation causes the defense to balance which allows your QB and O-line to see and read 1 thru 4 without an extra load to the play side. You can't date the option, you have to marry it I haven't seen the job advertised on TSSAA, any knowledge on who may step in? I wish Coach Wright the best of luck in his new role and York in their search
  23. Mac McCurry has been let go as head football coach. Defensive Coordinator Mike Head has been named as the Interim Head Coach. SOURCE: https://tnhighschoolfootball.com/mac-mccurry-fired-three-seasons-franklin-county/
