  1. Giving you a heads up, which you may already know. The tourney originally had planned to be at South Greene tomorrow (Friday.) A schedule change had the three teams playing tonight. There was a breakdown in communication somewhere. I was looking forward to seeing Cloudland come to town, as were several Cosby fans whom I talked with. They were pretty disappointed being unable to play a 1A team in their region in order to see how they measured up. The Cosby fans said they had been notified a couple of days ago. I hate it for your Cloudland players missing out on playing two games.
  2. Cloudland is never an easy game for South Greene. SG plays well at home, though. Good luck to your girls. I wish I could make the game, but there'll be plenty more this season.
  3. Before last night I would have agreed with you. South Greene is deeper than usual. They are extremely quick on defense. A bit undersized, they rebounded well against Lakeway Academy and Tennessee High. I don't know if they've ever beaten Lakeway in the last few years. Tennessee High was bigger inside against SG last night, but, as they did against Lakeway, SG held double digit leads in the early going and maintained them until the end of the games. Very encouraging, yet still a long way to go.
  4. Here's hoping they'll improve by then. It does happen sometimes.
  5. Looking forward to watching Jackson South Side, so I can see, in person, what every west Tennessee poster has been talking about. Upperman should be a good team to watch, also.
  6. The only thing I could find on the Internet is Coach T, which does have Alcoa remaining in 2A. However, I'm not too sure how up to date this is. Rumor Central (a parent from Alcoa) had them moving up to 3A, that enrollment was one student shy from being 3A last season. I could be wrong, but that wouldn't be the first time.
  7. You might want to check on Alcoa. I think they are moving up to 3A. I don't know how many Hampton girls graduated but have a hunch they will be competitive and rough (like they always have been.)
  8. Greeneville's seniors excelled when the team depended on them as freshmen. They beat a much-favored Grainger team during the season. It will be a great task to replace them. However, they still have some good established players. Coach Annette Watts knows the game. They'll still be good.
  9. Hampton is rough and tough. That's the way they raise them in mountain country. Both games with South Greene started out with Hampton way behind. Hampton girls didn't lose their poise and came back to win both.
  10. Upperman had difficulty getting the ball to their post. If Elizabethton, which has more height than Upperman, can develop an inside game, it may take some of the pressure off of their outside shooters. Upperman seldom had an open look past the three-point line. Betsy's Lina Lyon, compares favorably with Jala Cobb. I'm inclined to go with South Side, but I think the game will be closer than others have posted in this forum. Checking the Coach T scoreboard, Elizabethton lost to Westview by three points early in the season. SS by three points.
  11. Kids are not garbage. What an embarrassment today to be from Greeneville/Greene County. Greeneville once had a 16-point lead. That's the real story. Blaming the officiating takes away from the fine Livingston team and their gutsy comeback.
  12. Greeneville finds themselves in the same exact place as last year, losing in the regional and traveling to Seymour. Last year's game in the sectional with Seymour wasn't even close. Greeneville lost in the first-round in last year' state tourney. This year, if they win their first game in the tourney, they just might catch fire.
  13. Since Meigs and South Greene play in AA, it figures they are in small communities. It's a big deal when a former player and parent returns home and has children playing at their alma mater. I've seen that a few times.
  14. I went to the TSSAA site and found the brackets for several tournaments. 1992 Class AA State Girls' Basketball Tournament Bracket (tssaasports.com) 1992 South Greene went 37-0, beating Meigs for the title. The following year, South Greene came in 34-0 and Meigs beat them in the semis and then went on to win the championship. So Meigs returned the favor. I believe it was the '92 SG team that had four players over 6'. I asked one of them, a few years back, if she thought the game had changed since she played. She said, "Absolutely." She has a 6' 4" son playing for SG and a daughter who is graduating this year, after two years All-State and one state championship in volleyball. The kid was a great player during her four years on the SG basketball team. Hate to see her leave, but time marches on.
  15. That's on the coach. When I played freshman H.S. baseball, centuries ago, the coach chewed out a few guys for laughing on the bus ride home after we got our butts beat. Can't imagine what he would have done had we been yukking it up during a game.
  16. Alcoa was my pick to be one of the two teams playing for the championship, until Macie Ridge was injured very late in the season. Alcoa losing to Gatlinburg-Pittman in the Region final and having to face McMinn Central made it tough for them two years in a row. MC wasn't going to let Alcoa come into their house and have a repeat. It's interesting that MC has no seniors. That shouldn't be much of a factor. South Greene won the title in Class A one year, with no seniors and only one junior on their team. (I just had to plug SG ) I don't have a dog in the AA fight and look forward to being just an observer. Good Luck to all!
  17. Of course, it makes a difference. Especially when injuries occur toward the end of the season. I watched Alcoa and McMinn Central much of the time last night. When I was checking the scores, it looked like Summertown had a chance against Westview. IMO, the loss of key players makes a difference in the fourth quarter. Even though your team lost, the experience should carry over to next season as something positive. Here's hoping the kids have great rehabs and are back 100%.
  18. It was a pick your poison situation for South Greene. I would have preferred Gatlinburg-Pittman last night for a slightly better matchup, but they beat Alcoa for the District championship. Alcoa and G-P are two fine teams. It'll be a battle tomorrow night. Alcoa will really miss Macie Ridge as they move forward.
  19. South Greene versus Alcoa was a hard-fought game tonight. Both teams played tough, rugged defense. Alcoa, the bigger team, controlled the boards, which made much of the difference. Going into the game, I believed SG's best chance was to get Alcoa into early foul trouble, which did occur when post #14, Amelia Pfeiffer, had two fouls and sat out much of the first half. Later, sure thing to make All-State point guard, Karli Haworth, got into foul trouble and was forced to sit out for a few minutes. This made a difference in the game with #5 Macie Ridge, the other starting guard, out with an injury. SG got within 3 points late, but Alcoa always had an answer that included making their free throws. At SG, we will miss Seniors Jordan Roderick and Haley Susong, who had solid games tonight. Four years ago, Roderick was an instant mainstay for her team, while Susong patiently waited until her junior year to get more playing time. She turned out to be a valuable starter her last two years. That is a lesson for players who must hang in there and wait a couple of years for their time to shine. Susong was on fire this season, especially with her outside shooting and defense. Stephen Gregg did a great job this year coaching a team that often played against bigger teams. I'm looking forward to next year, when he once again leads the Lady Rebels, as they carry on the South Greene basketball tradition. Great season South Greene Lady Rebels 23—7. 20. Well said. I have always believed the games have to be played on the court. Best wishes and good luck.
  21. I should know better than get started in this thread, but here goes. Many years ago, I hired a black man to help in my construction business. He and I were drinking coffee at a store counter waiting for our order to be filled. An old man, who worked there, was chatting about the Bill Cosby Show that had been on the previous night. He said, "Did you see that N&^%$* last night?" There were several others standing there, and you could have heard a pin drop. Obviously, the old man had forgotten who was part of his audience. We finished our coffee, got our material and left. After we were riding in my truck for a few blocks, the guy helping me said, in a fake laugh, "Huh, Huh, Huh, Huh." I knew why he was sort of laughing, and I told him I was sorry that it happened. He told me that if he really thought the old man had meant it and was directing the pejorative toward him in a hateful way, he'd have "slapped the s... out of him." The player who allegedly called the other player a N-B should have known what would transpire. She allowed her temper to get the better of her, with the result becoming physical and dangerous. She was in the wrong. Regarding what black people may call each other, and what may be perceived as a double standard: I equate that as being no different than names people of the same nationality or race call each other. Whether they become insults depends on who is using them and the spirit in which they are used. I chalk it up to human nature, which is hard to understand at times. Regarding the one brief video, it looked like a coach was hard at work keeping his team off of the court and near the bench. I hope that every coach will sit his/her team down and explain what was wrong in this instance and let them know the eventual consequences. Every season should begin with a lecture on sportsmanship and disciplined behavior.
  22. She's a senior and is committed to UVA Wise. All I know is what I have heard on Coach T, so I haven't heard the extent of her injury. I saw Macie a couple of times at the end of last season and a few times this season. She and Karli Haworth are the best guard tandem in the state, in my opinion, or at least the best I have seen. She will be missed. I'm praying for a good recovery.
