Agree with you based on the expectations of so many for SP to mercy rule Fayetteville. But if you take away the disappointment, that was a great game to watch. To have a throw to the end zone on the last play to win a game that was in question from opening kick to final buzzer was great to watch. Of course, I might feel different if we lost :).

If everything works out the way most are predicting, Peabody would likely get McKenzie or Fayetteville in the semis and then SP in the championship.

Where are the preseason all state selections?

I hope you’re right. We play Watertown the day after Peabody/Milan and Upperman in week 4, both at Fayetteville. We’ll find out what we got those first 4 weeks. Then we get Red Bank in the back half of the season.

Fayetteville at Lewis Co week 2?

Not sure what Eagleville’s schedule looks like, but I think they may surprise some people this year.

You can say SP didn’t show up. You can say they were overconfident. I would say we (Fayetteville) showed up ready to play and gave them something they weren’t expecting. Being at the game, it looked like everyone from SP was surprised at halftime that they were in a game. Was that because SP was slacking or because we are a really good team when we are hitting on all cylinders? I choose to believe when our team is dialed in, we can play with anybody in 1A. I don’t know what that will look like against McKenzie or Peabody. Peabody is the top dog until someone proves otherwise. There are 5 teams that have elite talent IMO and 4 are in the west. It will be exciting to see the west quarters and semis. I hope we play well enough to be there.

Yep. Very unfortunate. That team graduated around 20 seniors and might have been better than the team that won it last year.

I saw film on them vs Richland last year. They looked good. They were scrappy and played hard. I think they have a good coach who pushes that. It seems like McKenzie is head and shoulders above everyone else and then there are a lot of teams fighting to join that top tier. I haven’t seen McKenzie in person. Who would you compare them to from last year’s elite single A teams. I saw Clarkrange last year and they were special. Is McKenzie that good?

How good is Wayne Co and what makes them good?

Agree. They are recruiting more than just girls basketball.

Agree Mt Pleasant may have a big time turn around. They got hit hard by COVID early last year and never could get it together. They have too many athletes not to compete. If this new coach is going to spread it out and use their speed, I think they could compete for the top of this region.

I have no dog in this fight and I don’t think you can ever accurately compare teams in different eras. Everyone thinks their hometown team is the best. I think the only thing that can be agreed upon is that they were all great teams who are worthy of being in the conversation for who is the best. The only team in this conversation that I saw in person was Greenfield in the 2019 state semifinals. They got beat by a Loretto team who flat out looked better than Greenfield that day and proved they were on the court. That Greenfield team included the 3 D1 players that keep getting referenced. They were not the best team ever in 1A that day. Loretto got beat by Gibson Co in the championship the next day. All 3 were great 1A teams as were all the others mentioned in this thread.

I think Coach and her husband got jobs at Madison in west TN.

Agree Huntland is still loaded with talent and could win 3rd district championship in a row. I think Moore Co is charged up with the coaching change and they have as much talent as Huntland IMO. I have seen the Moore Co freshman a lot and I think she is really good. I know she plays on a travel team that is for incoming 8th graders but I have seen her against high school competition too. She is good against both. Might take her some time to get used to high school competition every night, but I expect to matter a lot. I have been wrong plenty of times before though.

I could be wrong but I think Moore Co could be a top 5 team in the state this year. They have 4 seniors and a junior who have played a ton since they were freshman. They have a good incoming freshman class with 1 really good freshman. Richland lost 2K point scorer to college. They have a good scorer in Higgins that is a freshman but don’t think she can replace Jennings. They should still contend for 2nd in the district behind Wayne Co. Chad Hall is as good of a coach as I have seen in single A. I’ve seen the Collinwood point guard a couple of times this summer and she is really good. Don’t know what else they have.

Huntland has a lot of talent again this year but lost their best player last year to graduation and what would have been their best player this year to Webb. They will still be good though with what they still have. Moore Co will surprise some people. They have 4 seniors, 1 junior and 1 really good freshman. I would put them in front of Huntland in their district.

I hear the same about Moore Co. They have a great freshman class to go with a good senior class. I think they will be the team to beat based on talent and depth this year. Huntland will still be talented, so they will have a chance to make it 3 in a row. Fayetteville lost their bigs. Eagleville lost Chapman to Forrest. Cornersville had young talent the last 2 years. They should be able to get in the mix if they have developed them.

Good guy. Not sure how he will translate as HC but Rusty and his family are good people. They will be missed in Fayetteville. His son might wind up being a pretty good football/baseball player too.

Sounds good! I have family in Greenfield who know Peabody Coach and his family. They have nothing but good stuff to say about them and Peabody. I want to see how good Peabody looks in person and I assume Milan is going to be really strong too, so I’m hoping for a good game. How early do I need to get there to get a decent seat?

2 years ago, Fayetteville went 10-0 and then had to forfeit 6 wins. We lost 20+ seniors from that team. Last year we lost to Marion Co in our opening game and then to Gordonsville with 7 starters out. We were playing our best ball at the end. We lost several seniors that mattered but we got a lot coming back. I expect us to be in the mix but Peabody is the top dog until someone beats them. I think the West quarters and semis will be tough for whoever gets there. I assume the East will be a cakewalk again for South Pitt.
