Pickel Committs To Play Basketball at MTSU

posted June 24, 2005

Bradley Central senior guard Jackie Pickel has verbally committed to play basketball for Middle Tennessee State University. Pickel will play for long time Shelbyville Coach Rick Insell.

Jackie has played for Coach Insell three years on AAU and this is her fourth for Shelbyville Sports Shop. They won the National Championship last year. She had offers from several Division I Schools, including ACC Clemson and Maryland and locally UTC, Tennessee Tech, Appy State, and Austin Peay. She was being heavily recruited and pursued by many teams including SEC schools Alabama and Auburn. Jackie had a dream to go to Clemson, and almost committed to Jim Davis, but when he resigned she was back to square one with her decision making. But Jackie's mind was pretty well set the day Coach Insell was hired as the head coach at Middle Tennessee. She is his first recruit there, and she loves the atmosphere.

MTSU made it to the top 32 last year and he is confident with a good 2006 recruiting class that he will get to the NCAA Sweet 16 Jackie's freshman year and then keep getting better. MTSU has already scheduled Maryland, Texas, and other major NCAA Division I Teams for the upcoming seasons. Pickel said, "Coach Insell will be at the top, because he will back away from nobody." "He will not be satisfied with a conference championship or an appearance in the NCAA. He wants to WIN it. I like that kind of thinking and coaching. He will most definitely push me to be the best ball player, student and person that I can be."

“I wanted to go to a school where I knew I could contribute and make a difference, plus it is close to home,” said Pickel of her decision. "I love playing for Coach Insell and his intensity. He expects nothing but the best and will settle for nothing less than championships. And he cares about his players and will provide a good moral and Christian atmosphere with the coaches he has and his players. I really love his staff too." Pickel thought about waiting until the fall to commit, but after visiting MTSU, she decided to forego any further visits. " This will take all pressure off of me during the AAU and Nike Nationals, plus I know this is where God wants me to be. I have prayed for a long time and was struggling with what to do. Then Coach Insell got the job at MTSU, and it was like an answer to prayers. I just knew this was meant to be."

In high school, Jackie has started four years and been all-district, all-region and best of preps. She was recently named Sportsquest American Athlete of the Year and awarded a 1000 dollar scholarship. She was also selected as a Tennessee Titan Scholar Athlete. She has scored 1444 points so far at Bradley, led her team in steals and rebounds for the past two seasons, and will likely be one of the top scorers/players to come from Bradley. She is also President of Bradley FCA, member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Council, and carries a 3.85 GPA. She was named to the Street and Smith's All-American Honorable Mention this past year, and listed by Rick Bolus in Kentucky as one of the top 12 players in Tennessee where she is listed as number five in the state. Bluestar has her as a top 60 player in the US in the 2006 class. She has been an all-stater in both track and in cross country and a state finalist in the women's pentathalon. Pickel however does not think she is going to run track at MTSU.

“I really feel that MTSU women's program will be a top 25 in a couple of years. They are not that far away right now. Even if they are not, I think I am going to be happy.” Pickel said.

Jackie is the sister to Lee University basketball player, Kellen Pickel.
