I feel that they are of very little if any help. Kind of like the knee brace. If an ankle is going to give way the brace is going to do very little to stop it. Most medical people, if they are honest, will tell you that. They give some stability to the area but not very much. More of a mental thing. JMO

i have to wear a brace for both basketball and soccer..i have bad akeles and my trainer says that i should continue to wear it... it gives me more stability and i am not afraid that my ankles will give out...however sometimes it does just seem to get in the way

Yes, if already injured, or if it has been a chronic problem in past.

No, otherwise.

Yes. if you are rehabing an injury try the "Ultimate Ankle". I read a great article in a journal about female sports injuries. Seems there is alot of research on the subject and now we're finding out there is a relationship between hormones and fatigue and injury. I may seek permission to reprint the article or summarize if they don't care.

There is no doubt that there is a significant reduction in the number of ankle injuries, and the severity of ankle injuries, in players who wear quality ankle braces when they play or scrimmage. The ASO brace is what orthopaedics will recommend and we have had great success with them (they are a little expensive but all ankle braces are NOT created equal). When our players condition and drill, they are not required to wear them. But, when we are going live in a scrimmage or game where the likelihood of stepping on someone's ankle, etc. goes way up, they wear them on both ankles. Our kids can move just fine and still have plenty of support given the ASO's corset plus figure 8 strapped design. Waiting until you have an ankle injury to get ankle braces makes no sense when you could prevent or reduce an injury that could nag the athlete for years or even life. Just let the athlete go without them during practices where you know you will just be doing conditioning (particularly speed and agility work in the offseason) and drills and that will take care of any theoretical issues that one might assert about strengthening the ankles.

Only wear them if you have to. I have to wear them when I play sports but i have pretty bad ankles. If you wear them and dont need them it will actually make your ankle weaker.

I've heard this before. The only thing weak is that old wive's tale that it makes ankles weaker. Try an experiment. Play with great braces and after your first ankle roll, assess how badly you were hurt and how quickly you came back to play and how long until there was no discomfort whatsoever. Then go without the braces and that same ankle roll will probably be characterized by you as a sprain. See how long it bothers you and an injury like that stays with you and impacts your lateral speed and cutting. You'll immediately start wearing braces during live action on not only your injured ankle, but your uninjured one as well. It will make you a believer. Their are girls who are so obsessed with the negative fashion consequenses of not wearing them and there are some that are just too plain lazy to put them on and lace them up before a game or the types of practices where you should want them on.

Well, it won't be a question for us. As I understand it, they're mandatory on my daughter's team. I had heard good things and bad, and just wanted to see what everyone else's opinions were.

Thanks for the input!

on my team we are told not to wear them as much as possible

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
