Cloudland's record can be deceiving. Yes, a loss is a loss, however they have had several overtime games and games decided by 1 point. That has gave this team alot of character, and that has been hard to overcome for their opponents in tourneys. At this point in the year, the only thing that matters is their 7-0 mark to reach the state tourney. You can throw the regular season records out once you reach Mufreesboro. This team will surprise you, especially if you overlook them. They are not a big team or that athletic, but a sound and smart team. That is another key for them. They have no true superstars and it seems that someone different steps up every game. Ned Smith will probably play 10 players and that is nice to have that depth. Union City sounds like they have the weapons, coaching, and abilty to turn this game ugly if Cloudland doesn't show. I do not believe that will be a problem, but neither team can take this game lightly. If you look to the next game, this one may be your last. Both teams look to have advantages on paper, but come Wednesday what you have done to this point does not matter. The only thing that matters is the score at the end and who is moving on. Good luck to both teams, even though I am rooting for the Highlanders.

You know what lander..Im a big Union city fan but i really like your post..And your good sportsmanship..And ill say this..Im no doubt stunned at what Cloudland did to get to burro and im gonna give them major props, because i love to see a team play with alot of heart and ill bet there is not a team out there that has as much heart as Cloudland's team..So like you said it don't matter what you have done to this point, all that matters is what they do on Wednsday til Saturday...So my hats off to them guys and congrats.up til this point..But i must tell you Cloudland will have aalllloooottt of work to do to beat Union City because these guys have alot of heart also and can flat out play the game and with a great coach and assit..Not to mention a Mr.basketball finalist Marquis Weddle that will amaze you with the things he does..Ive saw him have one off night all year and that was against Middleton with a 7point effort..I was shocked..But he hit a game winning shot at the buzzer to put Middleton away and that why Union City is where they are now,so good luck..You will need it...My prediction 77-52 Union City.

This game starts at 12:15 p.m., it will be over by 12:17 p.m :D .. Union City in a rout. Congrats on both teams for getting there..too bad alot of good teams are passed over, becauseof the way the state tourney system is set up. :D

This is ridiculous. How can you suggest that "good teams are passed over, because of the way the state system is set up"? To be "passed over" is what happens when someone is picking things out, seperating the good from the bad. You "pass over" the things you don't want. These teams weren't passed over by some objective third party, they all had the same opportunity.

Is the NCAA tourney system flawed? Do you think it's "too bad" that every year there is at least a team or two that makes it to the Big Dance that's sub-500 - because they got it together and won their conference tourney? And, I would submit that the TN state tourney system is even better than alot of similar playoff systems, i.e. the NCAA. With the NCAA, some teams don't even get a chance to get in because they don't qualify for their conference tournament. With the TN system, everyone gets a chance to start at the district level, and for some teams, they don't even have to win a district game to get to the region. Plus, the seed match-ups are always 1-4 and 2-3, etc, and the region champ hosts the sectional - so you are rewarded for strong play, which is how it should be.

Ask any coach and they'll tell you, it's not how you play at the beginning of the year, but how you play at the end. That's why the NCAA tournament is so much better than the BCS. Shoot, you lose a football game or two, you're chances for a national title are over. But in hoops, whether NCAA or TN HS, you can lose all year long - as long as you get in done in the end, who cares? Ask Pat Summitt what she cares more about - the 10 regular season losses they had in 95/96, or the national title they won that year.

I spend most of my time on the girls board, but after hearing about Cloundland's story (7-18, winning 7 straight, and getting to state) I couldn't help but get behind it. These are the kinds of things that make sports great, regardless of where your allegiance lies. Every coach of a sub-500 team next year should point to this Cloudland team as an example of what can happen when you bring it all together.

And, I say all this having no idea where Roan Mt or Cloudland HS is...

Thank you for giving Cloudland the recognition that they deserve. Ned Smith has done an awesome job with this team. He let them be the underdogs, so they could fly under the radar. And look where it has got them. In the State Tournament.

Well if you read my post i have gave Cloudland major props on where they are now and congrats.to them..But im telling you now that Weddle already knows he will be double and triple teamed as long as he is in the turniment. Its nothing he is not use to but it want matter because Union City has to many weapons..One thing is for sure..There is not one person in that turniment that will stop him man to man,and really there is not a double team that will stop him either..Ask Humboldt they can tell you..Middleton contained him very well because everywhere he went there was 2 or 3 on him and it cost them because if they had any since the coach should had saw that Weddle was having a very off night and he should had went to a man defense to worry about others besides Weddle.M.J. Brown lit Middleton up and he was the whole key to the win he he is just a sophomore..So like i said before..Good luck to Cloudland because they will need it.

Does anyone have Weddell's season stats? As one of the biggest 'Lander fans, I must say that we have got to show up and play our best game of the year Wednesday. Ned Smith's squad is capable of doing that, and it will be very intriguing to see if they do so. Is Union City out of our league, Wednesday will tell us. Until then we can talk and trade opinions, but the players will decide who moves on on Wednesday. It is extremely hard to compare two teams that have not played each other, and the best way to do so is to watch this two teams on Wednesday. These teams have proved that they are dangerous opponents in tournments to reach this level, and I expect the same from both on Wednesday. Great job both teams, and good luck 'Landers!

He averages 27 a game...He's a slasher and a three point specialist...When he decides to put his team on his back, you can't stop him....He has scored 41 points against Trenton Peabody,he scored 41 points in a win at 2A power Haywood County(31-4),he scored 27 points on 9 three pointers at two-time defending state champion(2A)Bolivar and his career high 46 points in the region final loss to Humboldt....He scored 64 points in two games vs Lake County(#2 in 1A)..He had 7 points in the sub-state game against defending 1A state champion Middleton and the Tornadoes still won, squashing the myth they are a one-man team...It's much easier when he gets his average and some help.....Union City is very, very quick and athletic, they like to play a "helter-skelter" 94 ft. game..They use their athleticism and will exploit that on their opponents lack thereof....They average around 76 points..You can't blink or you will be behind quick....They exploit smallish, deliberate teams...

Uc wins this one by 25 or more if we press and by 12 if we play dont press.Cloudland can double team weddle and want slow him down.Uc have others that cloudland has to be aware of and thats xavier robinson and mj brown. Both averages double figures with xavier averaging double figures in rebounding also.Weddle also scored 101 pts in an xmas tournament in poplar bluff,mo.against forrest city, ark. memphis east and poplar bluff mo.I dont see anybody in this bracket the caliber of these teams so i dont see any of these teams slown him down.

    • I don't know what's going on in the town of McMinnville, but I've read this and it's disturbing.  I'm a "player" person, and I want what's best for the player. If a player gets cut off the team because she said the "F word" then good grief. I mean, come on guys. I wish there was a way for the player to transfer to a different program and just play ball. There are a lot of athletes that are stuck because they're in crappy situations regarding their team/coach. This is player just happens to be one them.
    • Won't happen. College coaches will back the coach every time and it cost this young lady her senior season. Looks like the player may be right on this one. School let her  go after one season. This stuff happens more than you think.
    • “No college is going to offer a scholarship to a player that is kicked off of the team.” For language? I’m not seeing that as a dealbreaker.
    • Why did the coach get rehired after she was let go as an assistant by the former Warren County coach and the current AD?? Is that accurate?? I am very familiar with situations like this. Suprised lawsuits haven't happend before. If the coach unfairly let the player go, I think she has a shot because it cost her a scholarship. No college is going to offer a scholarship to a player that is kicked off of the team. Not going to happen. There are bad hires like this a bunch and kids are treated unfairly by coaches that can't coach a lick and have super long ropes somehow. Amazing how some of these coaches get hired and keep their job.
    • I am going to assume you are not a lawyer, and most reasonable lawyers would not say the lawsuit has a zero percent chance in court. I agree with you that a coach has the ability to dismiss anyone from a team. However, Ms. Winfree was never presented with the opportunity to present her witnesses and have them tell the coaches and administrators what they heard. A lawyer could better explain the lawsuit and the grounds to you. Before you start making wild assumptions about the lawsuit, would it be too much to ask that you do a little legal research first? The lawsuit is dealing with due process, loss of property, and defamation.   You can read the lawsuit here: https://bdnewsletter.files.wordpress.com/2024/04/doc-1-complaint-filed-4-18-2024.pdf
