The East/Melrose Matchup is this weekend. I know that East was manhandled last week by Wooddale and some may have written them off. However this is a heated rivalry with playoff implications and will be played at a high level of intensity.

Any thoughts out there?

East is not as bad as you think. Wooddale is extremely fast and strong on D and have two of the better players in the state in Perry and Davis.

East is very similar to Melrose with good skill players and not a lot of size up front.

Its always a battle in the mound...save me a Turkry Leg

How many of you have seen East play? I help coach at wooddale and I did'nt see anything except Wooddale and East fans there.

I am not doubting Melrose...To much Talent...but East is not as bad a you think.

Melrose by 13 pts.

East: erratic offense - no defense - lots of penalties = 13 points.

Melrose: capable offense + good defense - lots of penalties = 26 points.

East's football team was a fraud last year; they're an even bigger fraud this year.

Bg3,

I saw East in this year's Jamboree, and several times last year.

East had no defense last year; they ain't got one this year! Their offense was a more potent and explosive last year, less so this year.

Here's what this means, particularly for Woodale: East does not have a solid football team. Thus, they can NOT (and should not) be used as an accurate "measuring stick," for an opposing team's true strength. No--I'm not saying that Woodale does not have a good team; I'm just saying that Woodale has not had a true test, yet.

All we can do is Dominate who we play which we have done. I have been with this team for 4 years and let me be the first to tell you........We are fast big and strong and will be the team to beat in 8-5a this year.

Melrose does'nt seem to be as explosive on offense this year and lost a lot on D. I am not picking them to lose but they have not show a lot on the O--side of the ball.

You know whats great that we are actually talking Memphis ball on this board.

BG,

You're right about Memphis Ball... We just need more Memphis folks to join this great CoachT board!

I agree with you about Melrose, also. They've got a lot of work to do...

As for Woodale...It's true--all ya'll can do is beat the teams that you play. You've done that, impressively. Kudos to Woodale....I just want to caution you, though, that "the jury is still out" on Woodale's TRUE defensive improvement. You just simply have not played any solid tems, yet.

Reminder: Woodale had a horrible defense, last year. It must prove that its defense has improved, this year.

BG, please do not misunderstand my position, relative to your team: I fully accept your word that Woodale's defense is "fast and big;" I'm just saying that until you actually play a strong, solid team...Woodale's defense remains a "big and fast" but unproven commodity, in my view. That's not necessarily a negative--just call it reserved judgement.

September 15th's game vs Whitehaven will provide the "jury" with conclusive evidence of Woodale's TRUE defensive improvement. Whitehaven has a solid team.

BG, all Woodale needed last year was a DEFENSE. If your squad now has a BONA FIDE defense then, no doubt, Woodale will beat Whitehaven. They will also be the team to beat in 8-5a. As a matter of fact, with your explosive offense, I would expect nothing less than a trip to the State Semi Finals!

Woodale fans, September 15th is your Judgement day.

This is great!! Like sitting in the Barber Shop kicking around Memphis Football.

I have to admit, I got a little excited when Wooddale spanked East in spite having 150 yards in penalties. However, I agree with TraderB that the jury is still out on just how good Wooddale really is. Their victories have been impressive but Hillcrest is not very good and I currently do n't know what to say about East.

In a few weeks, all these questions will be answered.

Wooddale, like Melrose has to get a handle on the penalty situation.

In regards to my beloved Golden Wildcats, last years passing game was rather pedestrian to put it mildly. Cooper was so good that he single handedly put the pop in the offense.

Passing numbers put up this year are showing great potential. Toney, the soph. QB, is the real deal. I think we have only seen the tip of the iceberg.

Looking at the numbers, the defense has been better than most against good competition. I think they are being overshadowed by the stellar play of the previous two year's defenses.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
