PowerSweep
This story ran in Friday's Knoxville News Sentinel... what are everyone's comments on this? In August, the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association decided to form two classes in Division II sports, save bowling, wrestling and track and field, for the 2007-08 school year. That movedWebb School into the highest classification. That could change. A TSSAA Division II committee agreed last Thursday to propose a Class AA division split into West and East-Middle regions for all sports for the start of the 2007- 08 school year. The TSSAA Board of Control will review it for approval at its Nov. 13 meeting. The newly proposed football regions get a little tricky. Webb would be placed in the East-Middle region, which would include a combined nine Middle and East Tennessee schools. Those nine would be split into three groups: A, B and C. Group A would include Webb, Baylor and McCallie. Group B: Father Ryan, Brentwood Academy and BGA. And Group C: MBA, Ensworth and Pope John Paul II. Under the proposal, Webb would play Baylor and McCallie then two more out of B and C for a total of six region games. But, the committee is alsomulling over whether a team should have eight region games, which would meanWebb would play each team from Group B and C. That must be decided by Oct. 31, according to TSSAA executive director Ronnie Carter. The five West region teams would only face one another. The top five East-Middle teams qualify for the playoffs, and the top three in the West advance. “I was for (the new proposal),” Webb football coach and athletics director David Meske said. “Just because us moving up, we were going to have to adjust to that level. It gave us the ability to have more flexibility in scheduling. “I would’ve still preferred three divisions in football just because of the size of schools. Asking a school of 480 (kids) to play a school of 1,800 is not the way to go, but that’s what was decided and we are going to have to adjust.” While Meske wasn’t pleased with the idea of facing a school with more than three times the amount of boys in it thanWebb’s, he still realized that this change could be temporary. “This is a two-year deal,” he said. “And after then, we’ll re-evaluate it.”
itzme
My first comment would be that you should buy a paper with news less than two months old! In all seriousness, however, I think that given the ridiculous nature of how DII was split off to begin with, this is a good stab at making the best of a challenging situation. PowerSweep
My first comment would be that you should buy a paper with news less than two months old! I didn't think this was old news. The Sentinel reported the fact that DII was combining football into only two divisions over a month ago. This story actually expands on something that was not voted on or discussed back in August and states that changes could happen. I think it is significant because it will help reduce the travel to Memphis and East TN for teams on opposite ends of the state. I hope they approve this plan. I hope it is approved as well.

But, the committee is alsomulling over whether a team should have eight region games, which would meanWebb would play each team from Group B and C. Well I disagree with the notion of one group with 5 teams and one group with 9 having to play 8 region games while the other plays 4. What kind of deal is that. Also the extra traveling on the groups from East Tenn would be crazy. Every other week they would be traveling over 2 hours to play a game. Stupid waste of gas & school resources I'd have to say. So you might as well Pencil in MBA, BA, McCallie and Baylor in the east ECS, CB & MUS in the east Leaving only one spot open in the east. It would almost certianly mean the end of the Knox Webb - Knox Catholic game and the JPII- Goodpasture Game because each team will need every win just to have a shot a the fifth spot. PowerSweep
I'd like to see them approve this plan with 6 region games for the East/Middle region instead of 8.
Knightime
I'd like to see them approve this plan with 6 region games for the East/Middle region instead of 8. I think that six would be much more agreeable to the schools. It would allow some of the nonregion games Like Webb-Catholic still to be played. PowerSweep
What about some of the private schools in DI???? Will they be allowed to join this year with the new changes? My understanding is that no private schools in DI will have that option until 2009 when the next restructuring takes place.
PowerSweep
Looks like they approved the region proposal but there's no mention of how many region games will be played. http://www.tssaa.org/BoardofControl/Actions/November2006.htm
www.schoolsportsradio.com
I've seen a rough draft of the schedule and the one I have has 2 of the east/middle teams playing 7 regional, 6 teams playing 6 regional games, and one team playing 5 regional and traveling to Memphis to play one game Edited November 14, 2006 by www.schoolsportsradio.com
