John Klock Dies

One of the pioneers of area high school wrestling died last week. John Klock, who coached wrestling at Elizabethton for 23 years, passes away at the age of 60. Klock was instrumental in starting the wrestling program for the Cyclones. He also started the wrestling program at Tennessee High and assisted in getting wrestling in motion at Sullivan East.

John started the Tennessee High program during the 1970-71 season and he began the Elizabethton program in 1972-73. John was finally pinned by Lou Gherigs Disease. He was a great guy and a fine coach He will be missed.

John was definitely a character. I'll miss him and Tony Farrace sitting on the back row of the bleachers at Science Hill duals, no doubt talking about how much better wrestling was back in the day. I just hope when I'm finished I can say I've done as much for wrestling in this region as either of those guys.

One of the first coaches to give me a hand when I first started caoshing in 1981 was John Klock. He made a great contribution to wrestling in East Tennessee. John along with Farrace, Johnson, England, and Hollowell all contirbuted to my education as a wrestling coach.
