Sullivan South as a host location

On a topic completely unrelated to the action on the court, I thought I would make a few positive and negative comments following my trip to Sullivan South on Tuesday night.

First, I do have to compliment the school on the following things:

1)Concession prices were reasonable. It was nice to see Chick-Fil-A sandwiches offered. On the downside, between games, they ran out of popcorn and sandwiches, so there was quite a wait for the corn to pop and the sandwiches to arrive.

2)Huge amounts of legroom in the lower bleachers. Not sure how many rows back this applied, but it was great.

3)No music at half or between games. Most schools have crap music that is often inappropriate, and usually played through a sound system that sounds beyond horrible. I would give the whole night a thumbs-up based on this alone.

Now for the negatives. I was surprised at the lack of traffic control leaving the game. I didn't see many(if any) deputies helping with traffic at all. I would make a few recommendations that would help drastically:

1)Law enforcement directing traffic.

2)Tow the cars that park in the "outgoing" lane. This cuts the lane from 2 lanes to 1. Somehow stop the cars from parking in

the road. Cars leaving, now have to merge from the right lane to the left becasue boneheads park in the left lane.

3)Make the "incoming lane"(from Moreland) an outgoing lane immediately following the game. If Bristol police can make 11E

one-way for a couple of miles after a race, this could easily be done from the parking lot to Moreland Drive.

I'm sure I'm not the first to grumble about traffic flow.

Overall a pleasant visit.

South isn't that bad of a location to hold tourneys around here, however there are lots of better locations in the area I think. I definately don't mind the 10 minute drive as oppose to drving to Science Hill or Tennessee High. I would be in heaven if they had regionals/districts at the DB dome. They in my opinion, have the nicest gym around, especially after the remodeling. Big, bright, and roomie!

Try the traffic at a big football game. People park on Moreland so they dont get caught in that mess. South did a good job, could have cut the heat back. It will be interesting to compare crowd size for tonight vs tuesday night. I really thought it would have sold out with 4 equal teams that could have won.

I agree, parking access is horrible. Just have to expect it.

They have opened both lanes as outbound after big football games in the past. They need to seriously work on this. There is a little known exit above the school if the gate is open.

Only other comment I would mention is the temperature in the gym. Too HOT!

If u want big bright and roomie then Viking Hall is the only place to host them. Its dumb to host a tourny like this in a dome. And south is way to Hot. need more space.

I would prefer the tournament to be at the dome of D.B. I don't like the fact that the floor at South was smaller. I think that Science Hill payed the south A.D. to turn the heat up. They wanted it to be more like a home atmosphere. /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I agree about domes, if you are referring to the mini-dome or something like the Georgia Dome. I think DB's would be great. When I went to the Arby's, I thought Viking Hall seemed dark. I'm sure the dark maroon around the floor doesn't help with giving a bright look. Also, their floor seemed a bit "darker" in comparison with the light color of the wood at Thompson-Boling Arena. Maybe the type of wood, or could be from years of refinishing.

Freedom Hall would be great.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
