HUCK
The Puma/GATA Sports National Classic turned into a Beech Bash. Beech (Tenn.) topped Owensboro (Ky.) 6-4 in the tournament title game Thursday at Tate. Beech went 4-0 in the tournament. Beech went ahead to stay with a pair of runs in the top of the second and gradually added to its lead. The Tennessee squad went ahead 5-2 in the top of the fifth when a run scored after an error on a ball hit by Jeremy Rice. The run proved useful when Owensboro scored twice in the bottom of the inning to get within 5-4. Nick Key's RBI-single in the top of the sixth brought in the game's final run. Owensboro got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but Brady Frey came on in relief and fanned three consecutive hitters to seal the win for Beech. Beech is the first Tennessee team to win the tournament in the event's 14-year history.
