QUOTE(Raiderfan05 @ Apr 12 2007 - 07:06 PM) 826436185[/snapback]I want to know what the opinions are of the team from people who have seen them play

They are young arent they? Thats the impression that I got. We are the same way, its frustrating, but they will eventually mature.

Do any of them play travel ball?

Young and thin. Looks like they are working hard and giving effort. Just not a lot of experienced softball skill there. It's almost impossible to wait til they are in High School to develop the skills to compete with top teams. The small schools in our area that are not made up of primarily travel ball players struggle. Unionville, Eagleville, Moore Co, and Santa Fe all come to mind, and there are many others. The small schools that do have a majority of their players that play travel ball do well like CA, Forrest, Cascade, Cornersville, and Richland. Just the nature of the game at our level. I'm not sure that age is that much of a factor. It has more to do with playing lots of high level ball before you get to high school to develop the skills. TCA as an example won the state in 1A last year with a freshman and an 8th grader doing almost all of the pitching.

Your right. Travel ball has done wonders for the experience levels for kids. I know for our group ( Huntland ) we have two senoirs playing so we are very young team.

A few of them do, but around here you pretty much have to be asked to play travel ball by a team from another county.

  • 1 year later...

Post was from a year ago, '07, and the team continues to improve in the 2008 season.

I feel kind of dumb because I didn't notice the dates until you mentioned it. I've got two of the Moore County girls playing travel ball for me and one Huntland girl. All three are excellent ball players. I just picked Emily from Huntland up a couple of days and she is going to be a huge asset to us!

Emily will be an asset to your team. She is versatile and fiery competitor. Wish there were more like her.

I hear ya. I was very impressed with what I saw! That is the first time I've ever watched a kid for four innings and picked her up on the spot. Gives you and idea of how much she impressed me! Her parents seem to be great people as well. Trust me, I recruit parents almost as much as players! Hopefully we'll be able to teach her a little this summer and she'll be able to use it to help her during her senior season next year. I spoke with her this morning and she's excited to get started!

    • Never said I thought it was a smart decision. I'm scratching my head at it too.
    • If he wanted to play QB he should have either went to Heritage or William Blount and had a real good chance there. In stead he'll be exactly what he was going to be at Maryville. They already know who their QB is going to be in 2025 and it ain't going to be him.
    • Easier said than done. The man who ran for 250+ yards and 3TDs is gonna be back….and a lot bigger.
    • plus it removes the pressure around winning.
    • You are correct.   The teacher's pay scale is virtually the same in Knox County, now, as it is at Oak Ridge.   The coaching supplements are still higher at Oak Ridge, from what I was told, but not a huge difference.   Plus, Rusty is going from a position coach to an OC position, which is what he was at South Doyle and where his comfort zone is.  And from a special education teaching slot to a PE teaching slot.  There is a lot of positivity in that move without even considering the coaching aspect.   Anybody who sees something negative here is just looking for negativity to begin with.  But some live in that world.   Really good hire for Brent.  He now has two experienced and quality coordinators and can concentrate on being a head football coach.
