QUOTE(OaklandBasketball @ Apr 13 2007 - 02:18 PM) 826436902Or maybe you play well, crushing the ball but the guys were in perfect position to make the play. I offer up no excuse, but after seeing what Oakland has done in the other 25 games, especially last night, that loss was a fluke or an upset, whatever term suits your fancy

There is an enormous contrast between the definition of "fluke" and "upset". A fluke is a chance happening (luck) For example: When I tipped the cup of milk over, nothing spilled. Everybody knows the laws of physics and gravity says the milk will respond to pouring out onto the ground. An upset is a legitimate overturn of what is expected, but without an unlikely interference of the laws of nature. For example: Hillary Clinton won the presidential race and will be our nation's president! /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> . She may not be expected to win, but the fact that she's in the race gives her the potential to win the race. When you say that Oakland's loss was a fluke, it is interpreted by anyone who is competent of the dictionary that Cookeville defied the laws of nature and beat the ungodly, unbeatable Oakland Patriots. So my friend, I'm glad you gave me the option of calling the occurance an upset, because it was nothing more than an upset. But to put "upset" and "fluke" in the same category of choices is like saying, "you can call this pit bull a cat or a dog... whatever term suits your fancy." My point: Baseball is a verrrrry mysterious game. You can go out on any given night against any given team and have your butts' handed to ya if you aren't ready to play. It's a perfect game with perfect philosophy, perfect strategy, and perfect chemistry. If all of these aren't applied by one team but all are applied for the other, anything can happen.... Gotta love the game. Not taking anything away from Oakland... congrats on the riverdale sweep /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

We all know and believe that anyone can win on any given night. If the bats aren't swinging, or if the error bug infiltrates your D, you can be sunk by anyone. Baseball is like any other sport really.....one can lose to the unlikeliest competitor. Siegel sure knows this.....as evidenced by Warren County's first district basketball win in YRS against #1 in the state Siegel bball team. It usually serves its purpose....wakes the previously undefeated team from its cruise control slumber to reality. I think our loss to Cookeville couldn't have happened at a better time. It re-focused Oakland and brought us back to earth by making us taste that bitterness of defeat. We didn't enjoy it......and decided it was time for Riverdale to take a drink or two too.

QUOTE(shadoe @ Apr 13 2007 - 01:13 PM) 826436894I dont think so.Their Freshmen team has only lost 4 games so far this season . They are 11-4. And split with Oakland earlier this year. They have some talent . Plus the 8th graders at Christiania are 9-2 so far this year.

Riverdale now has what siegel has had for years now and that is a good coach in the middle school Tony Sheffield is doing a GREAT job teaching those boys over there how to play baseball and how to hit..so when they get to RIVERDALE coach Powers isnt having to do ALL the coaching they now have a clue unlike when my oldest boy got to Riverdale...for example witha runner on 3rd my oldest didnt know his job was to hit a ground ball to the left side to get the run in and our freshman do know that now...so now when they get to RIVERDALE coach Powers can start coaching high school ball and we are seeing the effects of that already with this freshman group and with the 7th and 8th grade team...we may struggle this year and next but we will be back real QUICK ....MARK THAT DOWN!!!!!...if the kids work hard we may not be down next year I am excited for our future!!!!

GO WARRIORS

HE has done a great job over there in fact i saw him tonight...he helped my son out a lot last year he set a great foundation for my son and several others that are freshman at RIVERDALE and it is already paying great dividens and he only coached them for 1 year like i said he is doing great and i am sure it is helping coach powers a lot and i think in the years to come coach Powers will REALLY see a differnce not only in hitting and feilding but the thinking part of the game

QUOTE(Winners Inc @ Apr 13 2007 - 01:49 PM) 826436879There is no such thing as a fluke loss... translation: "excuse". you either lose because the other team outplayed you and you didn't play to your potential, or you win because you came out ready to play and beat the opponent's butt.

There is a such thing as a fluke loss. A team can lose even when the other team doesn't outplay them. Oakland is a prime case of this. Cookeville didn't outplay them-- Oakland didn't play to it's potential. Fluke is defined as "a stroke of luck". It was Cookeville's "stroke of luck" that Oakland didn't play to it's potential that night. And by winning 27 of 28 games so far, one can say that the one Patriot loss was a "stroke of luck" for the opposing team.

Sorry for getting off the subject rhs man just thought i should throw my opinion in there. /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I agree Riverdale Man. Coach Sheffield although new to being a head coach is starting to get the boys at Christiana to believe in themselves as players as much as teaching them. Up untill last year thier really wasnt alot of positive things happening at Christiania as far as baseball goes. The Freshmen team at Riverdale is looking pretty good and I think a few of those guys will help out next year on varsity. And the Christiana Varsity is now 9-2, and their JV is 11-4 so I agree the cupboard may not be as bare as some would think. GO WARRIORS

when u play a better team u are supposed to be challenged enough 2 step up & play better..what happened the other night is that as soon as the game started 4 some reason it looked like Riverdale had already given up.. i hate 2 bring this up on this board but it is kind of like the Riverdale - Smyrna football games this past year. was supposed 2 be a close competition everyone could not wait & then the preseason game Riverdale blew them out. but then when playoffs came around their coaches had made changes & improvements and their team had pulled it together enought to take the win and then the championship. now can Riverdale take these loses and learn from them?? absolutely... can the coaches bring this team together & make a championship team out of them??? absolutely.... but it is up 2 the guys really believing & wanting and the coaches being able to make the corrections needed. Look outside the box.. maybe there is someone who is playing a position right now that you wld never think of playing another...but swap them around change it up.. change can be good. Congrats 2 Oakland for a great game. Best of luck to Riverdale. Hope you get things turned around in the right direction.. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

    • The people need our help!
    • Lol when was last time they won region or got past the 3 rd round.
    • Gravedigger gotta finish filling the hole before hitting 40 East. May need a new Yellow Shirt play signaler on the Stones. And apparently a new strength coach now. Cicadas must've got shaken out of the bushes in Donelson. Hopefully the mower man sticks around to keep DG field looking pristine. Maybe new OC can call in a favor to his PGA friends that knows a thing or two about being green during the season. The heat is on soon. Bring in the 2 way freak Iceman and cool things off. He knows a thing or 2 about wildcats. Gotta take our talents South soon for Nationals. Don't step on my blue suede shoes.
