Brentwood Academy vs. Maryville Series

As Maryville holds a 2-0 record (they played in the 1970's in two state championships) against BA, I would love to see this series started. Both are perennial powerhouses of TN high school football, are regulars in USA Today Top 25 and have great teams year end and year out. How many of us fans would like to see this series started in the near future??? I would take this any day rather than play some of the out of state teams BA has scheduled in the past few years.

By the looks of Maryville's record, there is no team in ANY DI classification in this state that can beat them.....at least not over the last 5 years. BA is the only team I see in the state that would have a chance in matching up talent and coaching....possibly a couple of other DII teams. Is there any magic in getting these two schools to play each other for a series? My guess is that it would be bigger than the Maryville vs. Alcoa game as it has been a while since the Toronados have won. Not to take anything away from Alcoa, as they have some amazing talent as well. Consistently one of the top 5 teams in any classification or division in my book.

This is would be an incredible match up and certainly bring out a HUGE crowd. They could do a home & home or meet at a neutral site. It's common knowledge that GQ interviewed for the BA job before Potter was hired so there is obviously some familiarity between the two schools/programs.

I know that BA is aggresive in their scheduling as is evident with their playing Smyrna (5A defending champs) this coming Friday. I am not very familiar with who Maryville has played in their out of conference schedule in recent years. I know they play Alcoa, but they are only 2A. I'm sure Maryville fans would like to see them take some more risks in their scheduling.

I could be dreaming, but I see potential for a 15-20,000+ gate.......

What kind of gate is Maryville vs. Alcoa? I went to a M vs. A game 18 years ago. Very exciting! The only thing is that since 1927 (80 years), Alcoa has only won 22 contests against Maryville, so outside of a community game, the outcome is pretty consistent. In 38 seasons, Alcoa has only won 7 times. Check http://www.hsfdatabase.com for the scores.

I dont see Maryville and BA pulling anything near 15-20,000 gate for a game. Main reason is the distance. Not that many people are willing to drive 3 hours for it. You would have to put the game in a middle location at a neutral site on a non vol saturday to pull something like that. Alcoa vs Maryville pulls on avg in the past 7 years 8,000-10,000 fans. IF i had to guess MHS vs BA at MHS or BA would draw around 7.5k to 9 MAX, at a neutral site (TN TEch?) on a non Vol Football Saturday they might push 12,000

I think people in east TN would want to see it......especially since past east state power Jeff co was destroyed by BA in the 5A state championship to help create DII. I cannot think of BA playing a Knoxville area team since. I could be wrong. It's been a while since anyone has come to Knoxville for a major game from an out of the area team like BA. I still believe if you could get it at Neyland, it would be big.

It is TOO bad Maryville and BA have not played since the 1970's. Come on administrators.....as much as BOTH teams have been great in the past 35 years....get this game together..we are in a small state, and this is doable..strange how we can play out of state and far away games but not each other, but we are both USA TODAY top 25 teams on many given years.....This game hurts neither team in their division for a loss.....The last time Maryville and BA tee'd up, the players would now be 45-50...possible grandfathers...

I believe that this would be at this time the true test to the best team in TN.....WHO WANTS TO SEE THIS HAPPEN??????

this is a pipe dream...the clinic bowl organizers in 2005 wanted MBA, BA, Riverdale, and Maryville to square off in a double-header. The organizers, while rightfully upset about having the state title game pulled from them, were excited about the possibility of putting together games between teams who wouldn't normally match-up with one another. But this is Tennessee...MBA (who signed on regardless and was forced to play Byrnes, SC when no other TN public school would play the game) and BA signed on. Maryville and Riverdale said no. Of course, they would have drawn more crowd than any game in TN since the split in '97, and all the proceeds would have all gone to charity. Keep in mind this game would not have been a substitute for an existing game; it would have been an extra game...so no one can offer up the excuse, "we already have our fixed schedule."

With that said--kudos to the likes of Ravenwwod, Independence, Melrose, Smyrna, Hillsboro, and others who have gotten over this stuff and are scheduling d2 teams.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
