I don't even go to McCallie, but Ben Stafford.... I think he went to UVA, and the maybe the KC Wizards. This guy started 4 (maybe 5) years when McCallie was one of the strongest teams in the country. Also Tim Sparks from CCS, about the same era *mid 90's. He started for at least two years at College of Charleston, and has the most amazing touch you'll ever see.

Hey Guys when you talk of best players ---counting goals is unfair. The guy from Clarksville may have been great but they beat some good teams but they also played some teams that had little better than Ayso players on it, that's not a measure of talent, and the guy from Bearden, well I read where they beat two teams like 25-0, that is a easy way to get some goals.....the guys from Mcallie and the 90's teams from the memphis area , those were talent, they had it all, not just a bunch of goals. Coaches in those days didn't let teams run up the scores.....Not cutting at anyone, just food for thought

Greatest ever, huh? How do you explain when he goes one-on-one against one of his club team members, he can't even get a shot off. Matt has a nose for the goal but he is predictable, one-dimensional and his ball skills aren't near the level of his own BHS teammate, Derrick Radclife.

What I dont understand is how Farragut is being put over Bearden.. They haven't beat Bearden in 10 games, and guess what.. Farragut has to play 3 of the 4 games this year at Bearden where none of the seniors have been beat. Farragut will be one of the best in the state, but we will see if Ian and the Doyle's can make up for no goalie..

It will be a great match-up like always

The best high school player without a doubt is Bobby Leahy from Soddy Daisy. He had 69 goals in is four year career which makes him GOD. He was the main reason Soddy went to state finals in 2000. Even though they got beat by Houston, he couldnt play because he was suspended for fighting. But if he had played, they would have won. He was given many offers to play at the European level, but turned it down for Carson-Newman. All hail Bobby Leahy. (The weiner bomb has been dropped)

This thread has been made the last couple years and really shouldnt be titled best high school player. The fact is that it is nearly impossible to identify the best high school player in the state. There are so many talented players that you cant really compare. You have players in weaker divisions ripping teams apart. You have equaly good players in stronger divisions that obviously stand out but do not dominate as much bc of talent level that they are against. Its also hard for east middle and west TN players to identify players from other regions when they get to see them play alot. As far as the east goes my top players are Ian Backstrom and Derrick Radcliff. Fill me in on others from around the state.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
