Gibbs coach hanging it up

I don't know much about what is going on except that GHS admin has recieved over 40 applications for the position. I heard they have been interviewing 3 or 4 a week. This is probably the best they can do since the state has now mandated that every teacher must be observed every two years now, which means the admin must observe at least half of their teachers every year, this along with all the other duties such as discipline, and the many many principle meetings they must attend away from the school. Sorry I can't offer much more than that. I would be interested to know if anyone knows who may have already been interviewed.

You make some good points. But why would they interview all of the candidates. Surely they could have narrowed it down to a more workable number based on resumes, references, experience etc... This program is a ship without a rudder. Sure the assistants are rolling up their sleeves and working with the kids but they need the leadership that can only come from the headcoach. This job has been open since November. Spring practice is on the horizon. Something about this delay just doesn't seem right.

I agree with you. It's getting to a point to where if they don't speed it up a little, the new coach will be at a huge disadvantage when he gets there simply by not having enough time to get things the way he wants them. Most Head coaches are very anal when it comes to getting things the way they want them. Oh well. Best of luck to you good folks down there in Gibbs. I hope you guys get a good one.

I failed to mention that part. I had heard that they were probably not going to interview everyone on the list. Only those that are most qualified. After that I am sure they will need to conduct second interviews with the best prospects in order to make a final selection. Last I heard, they were getting closer, and with the new strength and conditioning coaches that are employed by Knox County, the off season workouts are probably the same at this point regardless of who the coach is. I do agree that a coach does need to be in place before spring practice begins, and I am sure that everyone in the Gibbs community who have ties to the football program are becoming restless with anticipation. Hopefully something will transpire in the next few days.

Congrats on your new hire Gibbs. According to the paper, you did an exhaustive search with mulitiple applicants from all over ther world and you didn't even need to leave the building to find your new coach. Are the Gibbs supporters pretty happy? And are the athletes that roam the halls of Gibbs going to come out and play football now? I hope it works out well.

I've waited a while before posting my comments. I wait no longer...some things just never change, the good old boys are at it again. Nothing against Coach Conley, but if he is the best choice, why in heavens name did it take so long to name him as the head man?

Personally, I think Coach Qualls or Hassell would have been a better choice than staying in house.

Your about to see the same type of thing in the hiring of the New Superintendent. Spend thousands of tax payers money and find one in your own back yard. I think Wright or Thomas would be the best choice but for some reason the School Board thinks they have to blow our Money and put on some kind of show to convince use of that.

As for the Gibbs Coach. Why waste applicants time and resources when a qualified candidate is in house. I bet they knew before Christmas. Do they really think they are fooling someone. I hope the folks in the Gibbs Community are happy and wish the new Coach the best of luck. But I agree that the good ole boys system has raised its head again.

I don't like Gibbs at all, but I like Conley. He was an assistant at Rutledge for a few years and most of the folks got to like him a lot.

In all honesty Carroll should've hung it up a few years back and Conley should've been the heir apparent all along. Call it "good ol' boy" all you like, but it'll be good for Gibbs to have an alum as well as a former assistant coach.

kevb1990,

Like I said earlier, "I have nothing against Coach Conley". When I said the good old boys, I was talking about takin so dang much time and then hiring someone right down the hall! You look at and interview a number of candidates, this hire could have been done long before Christmas allowing Coach Conley all of January and February to work with his team and all of them knowing who the HC was going to be!

I wish Gibbs the best of luck, I really do. I know everything happens the way that it is supposed to. But, I kept hearing people say that Gibbs wanted to get some new blood in there to shake things up & turn them around. The guy from Cumberland Gap appeared to be a good choice & didnt even get an interview. Prob because of his young age I think hes 30. But, he is doing a great job as an OC & he had a guy from Bearden ready to come be his offensive coordinator, & I knew we would lose him somewhere this off season, hes a young guy & was ready to step up to a coordinators position. He didnt wait to see what happened with Gibbs, he took off to Wartburg Central as a defensive coordinator in hopes to help rebuild that program, best of luck to Coach Ellison.

He also had a guy that was ready to come from West High & run his defense. Well I think you guys passed up on something good. 3 guys from winning programs with no ties to Gibbs. Sounds like the good ole boy system to me. Im sure the new coach has great credentials as well, but will it be a change?

Good luck to every coach & every program that I just mentioned.
