Knoxville Area Teams

Knoxville area teams were well represented in MBORO last year.

Oliver Springs was state runner up in Class A losing a heartbreaker to Gleason.

Austin East was state champions in AA.

Knox Webb was state champions in Private Classification.

All three teams have the talent and leadership to win the state championship again this year.

Knox Webb

Knox Webb has prep All American and UT commitment 6-3 Glory Johnson. She's one of the top overall players in the nation. When you throw 6-2 junior Faith Dupree who is one of the top juniors in the nation, Knox Webb sports one of the best frontcourts in the country. Knox Webb could be the best team in the state and certainly one of the best in the nation. Expect the Spartans to enter the USA today Super 25 rankings.

Oliver Springs

The Lady Cats were a couple minutes in the 4th Quarter in the state championship away from knocking off West Tennessee power Gleason. Junior Kayla Christopher who is ranked as Tennessee's 2nd best player behind only Knox Webb's Glory Johnson should have the Lady Cats primed for another run at the state championship. Like Webb's faith Dupree, Christopher is considered one of the top 50 junior prospects in the country. Add the great veteran play of Barger, Hall, and other Lady Cat players, and the coaching prowess of Coach Christopher, OSHS should be ready. Knox Webb plays at Oliver Springs this year in what could be one of Tennessee's better high school basketball games of the year featuring outstanding talent.

Austin East

The Lady Roadrunners are the class AA defending state champions. A-E has solidified itself as one of the powers in Tennessee high school basketball as the A-E program just keeps rolling along. There is no rebuilding at A-E-just reloading. Goss and Robinson return from last year's championship team. That doesn't bode well for A-E opponents. Look for the fast break Lady Roadrunners to approach 30 wins and be positioned to play for a back to back state championship.

Oak Ridge

The Lady Wildcats return many from their state tourney team. This veteran team is hungry. Look for Reagan Thompson and Kortni Jones to lead a high powered attack. The Lady Wildcats should be among the best overall teams in Tennessee this year. It's a shame with the towns of Oliver Springs and Oak Ridge seperated by just 2 miles that it's been 40 years since OSHS vs. ORHS have played. These two teams need to meet on a yearly basis . There is too much success and talent on both teams for it not to happen.

Who are the other teams in the Knoxville are has the talent to compete for a state championship?

AAA

Maryville...probably better than last year even with their losses..will they have two teams at states.

Heritage...as soon as they get everyone back from injury and working together. But for now, they will start off a little slow but gain some depth.

Greenville will be the team to beat in the east. Who ever gets thru them will go to states.

Sevier County is dark horse, look for them to upset.

Oak Ridge is the class of their district. Wait and see for Karns, West and Powell.

AA

AE have the talent to be the best team from east all divisions. They need the drive they had last year. They can play with the best, they are that talented...but will they.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
