Union City will face the Hoyas from Harrison,Georgia tomorrow night at 8:30 PM in the championship game of the Poplar Bluff Showdown....

Harrison beat Liberty 64-61 to get to the championship game....

Union City's Mr. Basketball award winner from last season,MJ Brown hit for 39 points, including 19 in the fourth quarter to lead UC back from a 13 point deficit with a little over two minutes left in the game....Raytown South missed 8 free throws to allow UC back in the game....Pat Polk hit the game winner from 3/4 court at the buzzer....

The 39 point effort from Brown is a career high and I believe tied the school record...I'm not positive on that...I think Antwan Coby got 39 in an OT game against Martin Westview and I think Marquis Weddle got the same in a game his senior season....Again,not 100% sure on that...chipper would probably know for sure....

Weddle had I think 46 against us in the Region Championship when he was a Senior. Humboldt won 86-83.

You may be right...

That would be impressive because Weddle severely sprained his ankle in the district semi-final that year, also against Humboldt....He played the last eight games of that season with a pretty bad high ankle sprain....

Man, what a win. Wish I could have been there but those that get to follow the Teams, a game like this is a reward for not only them but the team.

I did hear Coach Sisco ( Shane ) say this morning on the Radio Basketball show with Paul Tinkle, that in his 9 years of coaching, he had never seen a team as quick as the team from St. Louis. They had a 6'6" post plaer but the reset were around 6 ft to 6 '2". He also went on to say that the effort of the Union City plaers were they had played this team so close there was no use in giving up and played to the very last second.

He ( Shane ) also said his team ( Union City ) was VERY TIRED and really would be suprised if they didn't come out a little flat. His tone was kinda like....I know going into the game tonight, it may come down for Union city of how much gas they have in their tanks.

He knows that this tournament, his team has come in as the smallest of schools beat a 5A school from Arkansas the first night, then beat a 4A school from St. Louis and now play the team from Georgia and they are LOADED.

But you know what, with Coach Marty sitting by his side , the other team has NO IDEA what they can do as coaches and as a team.

Great Tournament Union City, now just for the icing on the cake, win the Championship game, but if not....licking the bowl in not always so bad.

Everyone....and I mean everyone....better look out. The last 2 weeks this team has really come around and will be READY for the run at the GOLD Ball.

ucdiditagain.....Those kids play 5,6 games a day in the summer...They are not tired...LOL...PLus they are 15-17 years old, they are too young to get tired...They'll be fine...

I'm sure the coaches have seen Harrison play their two games this weekend and they saw them three games last year...I bet Shane and his staff have already worked out a pretty good game-plan....

The Hoyas will have a definite mis-match that will work in their favor...They have a 6'7" kid(Matt Sunberg)who plays the guard position that won the 3-Point shooting contest yesterday....Probably the one to check him will be Nik Brooks..At 6'3" at least he will have the quickness plus a little height to maybe put a hand in this kid's face...

At the end of the 3rd quarter.....

Union City-47

Harrison-43

Union City trailed the Hoyas at one point in the 3rd 39-33 but went on of their runs, this one a 11-0 run that put UC up 44-39....The Hoyas lost their composure a little and got T'd up during the UC run....

Tempers are flaring and the Tornadoes pressure D is taking it's toll as the Hoyas seem a lttle winded....

Looks like fireworks for the final quarter.....

MJ Brown leads the Tornadoes with 20 points....He is the leading scorer in the tourney

Final from the Poplar Bluff Showdown.....

Union City-64

Harrison-59

The Union City Golden Tornadoes cross the river and on three consecutive nights beat three 5A schools from three different states, including tonite's opponent Harrison,Ga who had advanced to the Georgia State tournament 6 of the last 8 years.....

Union City opened up a 57-49 lead in the 4th qtr only to see the Hoyas put up 8 quick points to tie the score with a little over 2 minutes left to play...UC then regrouped to put up 6 straight of thier own to go back up 63-57 and held on down the stretch in large part because of the board work of Andre' Coby...Coby twice grabbed huge rebounds off missed free throws to keep possession and more importantly run some more time off the clock....

Union City improves to 16-0 and wins both the Battle for the State tournament and the Poplar Bluff Showdown championships....

    • Hmmmmmm doe dee doe doe……sounds like they are leaving Geenback faster than the lawnmower will go in fifth gear.  Hmmmm….. you can bet the lawnmower on that.
    • West looked solid...excited to see this young group excel
    • When you have a school that right at 200 kids only half are going to be male and to get 25% of them to come out for football is a very hard task. Take away an 8th grade syatem and your you have another hill to climb up. If 5 kids are actually leaving your not going to have enough for practice. Your only chances for wins would be against the weakest of weak teams. At one time Greenback had kids coming across the wall like the Mexican Border and now their leaving town before sundown. A hugh mistake was made on not hiring Ryan back because of his ties to the community and his ability to bring in the right kids, not run them off. The last coach failed because he wasn't one of community so they go out and do it again. I'm sure Coach Clemmer is a good person because I do know people that do like him but he is caught in the middle of a fan base that will not support him no matter what and it could lead to a disaster if that many kids are leaving the program. The person that caused all of this mess has no business on the school board and needs to stick with hiding in the bushes giving out speeding tickets to out of towners coming through.
    • My outsider looking in perspective is Oliver Springs, Coalfield, Rockwood, and Harriman: fill out the top 4 good teams that beat up on the bottom and will all be in a good place to win in the 1st round with one team maybe making it farther. Midway: funnily enough in the middle an alright team that can beat the teams below them but not the top 4 misses the playoffs but still has a decent record. Oakdale, Greenback, Sunbright: round out the bottom each team has its problems and with a rough region and challenging non-conference records may not be pretty. Oakdale graduated lots of talent and experience, Greenback is in all sorts of internal turmoil with their new coach, and Sunbright small roster tough region not tons of Fb played. (Teams could be rearranged with other teams in their groups but this is how I see them finishing)
    • Kids quitting to focus on one sport could be a worry but multi-sport athletes transferring out would damage more than just football so I think the people who made this decision could find out they are going to get burned in multiple ways.
