Now that 2007 is over and complete I want to thank everyone who took part in our first year of "Friday Night Scoreboard" from each team in the region. It was really fun and very beneficial swapping scores from games each week throughout the season and I liked the fact that we all knew what was going on throughout the road to the playoffs. Congrats to the David Lipscomb Mustangs on representing our region in the classy manner in which you always seem to do both on and off of the field. Winning the third state championship in the history of your very great football program is an amazing feat.

ALL IN ALL I BELIEVE 2007 WAS A MAJOR SUCCESS IN THE REGION & 2008 IS LOOKING GOOD WHEN PREVIEWING IT TODAY............................

David Lipscomb: the state champion Mustangs return quite a bit from this year's team. Caleb Simpson will really be in his third year as a starting QB for the offense and that kind of stability at the quarterback position is vital to a team's success. The likely hands down candidate for Region MVP next season will be Zach Rogers. Rogers is the Mustangs leading receiver from the last two years and I expect him to continue to be a dual threat on offense next year both as a pass catcher as well as a runner. Kyle Lehning should continue to see action as a receiver on offense where he really played well this past year. The line play will be solid with returning starters Andrew Quinn & Dallon Hudson anchoring the team in the trenches. On defense the Mustangs return linebackers Michael Saggio, Ben Brewer, & Evan Webb to the field in '08. The defense also returns Harrison Daniel & Dallon Hudson on the line to play in front of those guys. In the secondary defensive backs Kyle Lehning & Zach Rogers both return. All in all I would say that this team has an excellent shot at repeating next fall if they play to their potential.

KEY LOSSES: Jeremy Holt, Kevin Davis, Russ Moneypenny, Travis Harper, Zach Lehmer, Brandon Cannon, Cameron Hunt, Daniel Dorris, & Mitchell Tempenny

Giles Co.: the Bobcats were very young heading into this past year but they enjoyed a lot of success throughout the year going 8-2 and earning a first round home playoff game. In '08 this team appears to be loaded once again. Bo Wallace returns as the team's quarterback where he posted some incredible stats this past year. His favorite target also returns next year at receiver in Rico Brown. The Bobcats backfield will be very talented again with both Tobias & Cory Houston returning to the lineup. Enrique Villalata returns to handle the placekicking chores after having a fine season in '07. The defense will be strong up front yet again. Dimayo Birdsong is a monster of a man in the trenches. Both Darius Turner & Russ Cobb return as linebackers which will again be a team strength.

KEY LOSSES: Marquise Gardner, Shavarous Coleman, Josh Perez, Aundra McElroy, Torrell Harney, Quon Reynolds, Kendall Dangerfield, & Brett Gleason

Cheatham Co.: the Cubs overcame significant odds this past year as they made the playoffs for the sixth year in a row following a start of 0-6. A bunch of lettermen return to the field next year to try and make that number a seven. On offense Garrett Potts returns as the signal caller. Potts returns a very good receiving core next year in the form of Justin Batts, Tyler Anderson, Tyler Adkisson, & Zack Wilson. Joe Rhinehart returns as the team's running back where he is a threat to both run it and catch it. Up front on offense the Cubs return Jesse Boyd, Tanner Owen, Cody Anderson, Devin Bryant, & Brian Mayo as starters. This offense should be strong. The defense returns a lot as well. The line returns tackles Jacob Dodson, Ryan Phillips, Zack Bush, & Cory Chambliss who all played well down the stretch. The linebacking core will be a strength as the Cubs return starters Shawn Montgomery, Kendall Chambliss, Cody Anderson, & Brady White. In the secondary the Cubs return starting corner Garrett Potts as well as starting free safety Justin Batts.

KEY LOSSES: Brandon Theriault, Jerry Henry, & Kyle Smith

Marshall Co.: the Tigers first year under their new coaching staff was a success as they not only went to the playoffs but they also won a playoff game and then played competitively in the second meeting with DL. The Tigers offense returns quarterback Jake Morris. Morris will be in what basically amounts to his third season as the team's starting quarterback. Joining Morris in the Tigers offensive backfield will be Justin Braden. Braden will be the best pure running back returning in the entire region next season. He has gone over 1,000 yards each of the last two years. David Tadajewski returns as one of the team's top receiving threats and Morris will look to him quite a bit. On defense Michael Murphy will anchor the group. Murphy is a beast up front and should be a prime choice for defensive player of the year honors heading into 2008. Joining Murphy on the defensive side of the ball will be Tyler Clift and Cameron Evans. Justin Braden will likely take on a larger role in the defensive backfield.

KEY LOSSES: Jaron Jones, Don'ta Hightower, Cavalla O'Neal-Sommers, Trevor Walker, Joe Gentry, DeShaun Greer, Race Wilson, Steven Evans, & Dakota Binkley

Page: the Patriots started the season slow under their first year staff but made a strong late season push to the playoffs before falling just shy in the final moments of the season finale. In 2008 the staff will have experience with the players and the players will be very experienced. Taylor Lankford will return as the team's primary ball carrier on offense. He has been a starting back for the last two years. Blake Neel returns to lead the offense from his quarterback position. Neel was nearly unstoppable at the end of the season as he threw for tons of yardage in the final half of the season. Neel has several of his targets back next year to distribute the ball to. Matt Camargo, Houston Bagsby, & Cole Meenach are members of this group. Jordan Rion returns as one of the top kickers in the region and he should have a significant role in Page's scoring next fall. On defense linebackers Cody Faulkner & Taylor Lankford lead a group that should be much improved.

KEY LOSSES: Blake Byerly, Mark Tucker, Will Camargo, Matt Blankenship, Jordan Dowd, Chad Parker, Weston Brann, & Vinny Peilla

Creek Wood: the Red Hawks finished the season in 2007 as one of the better teams in all of Class 3A not to qualify for the playoffs. That's a bitter taste that they will look to eliminate next fall. Returning to the lineup for Creek Wood in '08 will be a strong rushing attack on the offensive side of the football. TE Stokes & Caleb Bell make up this group that will look to pound the football at will. The Red Hawks return a strong group on both sides of the football in the trenches and this should help them to both run it as well as be tough against the run. This group consists of Tyler Murphy, Trent Armstrong, Shawn Henry, Chris Hunter, Brian White, Jacob Pate, & Chris Hartman. Look for Stokes & Bell to both be two-way players not only in the offensive backfield but also as linebackers on defense.

KEY LOSSES: TJ Dollard, Chris Elliott, Sam Shelton, Cody Tucker, JoJo Hill, Jordan Dawson, Woodrow Taylor, Dylan Hunter, Caleb Davis, Brett Wilson, & Justin Wilson

Spring Hill: the Raiders are in the process of searching for a new coaching staff that will inherit some talented players once they arrive before next fall. Broc Loveless gets his shot at quarterback where he saw time as a starter this past year. Joining him in the backfield will be running back Travis Carter who has playmaking abilities. Stephan Oskian will be relied on as the team's top returning receiver. A lot of experience returns on a line that has a way to go to get to the level in which they need to play at. On defense linebackers Thad Furtaw & Allan Beasley both return to anchor a group that must improve against the run. The secondary will be young due to graduation losses.

KEY LOSSES: Magwan Smith, Greg Owens, Allan Fentress, Louis Sanders, Oliver Goodman, Tommy Baxter, Bola Thompson, & Roshaun Patel

Montgomery Central: Hunter Brewer started the year as a running back but became the team's quarterback late in the year. Where he plays will be a huge question going into next season. Justin Saulsberry is the best back on the team and likely their best overall player. He's a real gem. If Brewer does play QB then he'll have some good weapons to get the football to in Quinton Snyder & Monte Lafferty. Ronnie Britcher & Chuck Farmer anchor the team up front. Bryan Smith, Steven Sheaves, and Justin Long all return in the trenches as well next fall for the Indians. Saulsburry, Adam Fisher, and James Pokorny all return as linebackers on a defense that wasn't terrible against the run and shouldn't be next year either with this unit being their best group. In the secondary Justin Schultz, Bobby Hawk, and Kenya Miracle all return.

KEY LOSSES: Blake Clayton, Michael Cilk, William Lyle, Dempsey Van Wormer, Josh Baker, Cezar Thompson, & Matt Castner

Merry Christmas Everyone & Happy New Year to All!!!!!! I look forward to talking a lot about these teams and these players when we get things started again in the fall of 2008 /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

I had Don'ta Hightower as my #1 prospect. What are you views on him? I hated to see us lose him.

A great talent with tremendous size and speed. As a linebacker he played the run very well up tight in the box. He lacked the ability that will be needed from an LB to cover backs down the field in the SEC. That's why I expect him to move up and play defensive end in college. He has the size and speed and could add the strength to really be a dominant pass rusher (ie Alex Brown from Florida who's now playing for the Chicago Bears).

Don'ta will not play offense in college. He likes receiver but he doesn't have the "burst" to play that position in the SEC. He can't play fullback or tight end because he's not a great blocker at all. He has the hands but he's just not going to block anyone.

Don'ta Hightower will be a great defensive end at Alabama for the next four years and with enough work he does have the potential to maybe one day play football for a living. He's got that much ability and size definately!!!

Ill be dead honest I only saw him play once last year and he wasnt impressive, This year he was the real deal, he was in or around every tackle. best wishes to him in the SEC.

BC,

Nice summary and look ahead. A few of the Mustang sophomores this year who will likely play big roles for the Mustangs next year.

In addition to those you've already mentioned, there were also several sophomores who saw varsity playing time this year. Likely to replace Cameron Hunt at LT will be Kyle Chester. Kyle is 6'3" and 240 lbs and is only 15 years old. Because he's young and had only played DL through middle school and his freshman year, he had a great deal to learn this past year on OL. He's one of the strongest kids in his class and runs well. At RT likely to replace Brandon Cannon, will be Rainey Lankford who is 6' 1" and 236. Next would be William Stevens, who is the younger brother of 2006 Mustang Charles Stevens. William is 6' 1" and 200 lbs and has played DL -Std, TE on Offense and special teams. Big strong kid, moves very well and is a play maker. Next would be Matthew Quinn, the younger brother of Andrew Quinn. Matthew saw playing time backing up Andrew this year and is the strongest kid in this class. Another kid who contributed on varsity is Blake Johnson who is 5' 7" and 140 lbs. Blake is very strong, but will be working to add some weight in the off season. His positions are RB, Safety and punt returns. He mainly contributed on varsity in the area of punt returns this year. He is a very good play-maker with great game instincts.

There are some others who are play-makers, and who will battle for starting positions this next year as well.
