I'd heard rumors about this back in the middle of the football season....

Any names surfaced yet??...Has he handpicked anyone to take the job from the current staff??

Is Pritchard also retiring?

You have McAdams and Adams on staff with head coaching experience if I am not mistaken.

Swenson wants to come back I hear.

I have heard Ward rumored for this job as well.

Then again I could be way off.

I had heard he announced to the team yesterday afternoon. He was picked by the late Coach Ward to succeed him. Mansfield like Coach Paul Ward had a rough start early in his tenure by going 1-9 his 2nd year. He finished with 151-62 over 17 seasons and a winning percentage of 71% against some of the toughest competion in the state.... Mansfield led the Mustangs to 7 semifinal appearances and a state title in 2003 and runner up in 1999 and 2004. I know it must have been hard for "Coach" to finalize his decision. He is close to his players like most good coaches are.

Rumors have already started but since this is so sudden and has just been announced, nobody has had the time to "feel out" the administration yet. I'm sure the powers to be will find the right man to lead the Mustangs. I don't think it will be long although the new coach may not be able to lead spring practice so Mansfield could lead through the spring.

Probably be in January before we hear anything.. Go Mustangs........

The David Lipscomb Football Community and the Lipscomb Sports Network congratulates Coach Mansfield on his body of work at Huntingdon High School and wish him well in his retirement.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Getting off the subject a bit but I witnessed the Lipscomb-Fulton game again this year and Coach Mac and his staff just plain outcoached the Falcons. When asked about the 2 offsides penalities against Fulton, Coach Mac didn't say that was good coaching but only said "that's football". That Cobb for Fulton is an amazing player. Congratulations on another State Title....

I congratulate and commend any Coach who can be successful in today's demanding society and have a successful program without being controversial or arrogant. This school is losing a true gentleman of the profession not likely to be equalled for quite a while there. Those shoes to fill might be size 26. Have a joyous and peaceful retirement journey without too much withdrawal!!!!!

His retirement starts at the end of next football season is what he is telling his neighbors over in C- Town.

Probably has enough sick days to retire a year early. I'm expecting a big announcement the first part of january /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

    • And can you tell me who those two quarterbacks were, and every kid that was put into college from Bearden is a Bearden kid? It’s kind of why they graduated from Bearden.   and I would definitely not consider ETSU “waste”…
    • Most of this is complete gibberish. But the one part I could decipher is putting kids in college. This coaching staff hasn’t put a single Bearden kid in college. They completed wasted one of the best WRs in East TN and have ruined two talented QBs. All because they’re in over their heads.
    • Well, I’d hope the new coaching staff thinks they are all that because they can always walk around the school, anytime they want, thinking that, especially for what they’ve done for the student athletes and the players, putting more kids in college in his first season than the old coaching staff did in numerous years combined, but we will just sweep over that because I know you don’t like facts. But trust me, nobody wanted Mr. Big britches, made the star player switch to quarterback, which is ultimately the reason he ended up transferring to play the position. He loved, but unfortunately, had to be at another school because Mr. Big Britches doesn’t like when a teenager knows more than him, but can’t expect much coming from a guy who used all class throwing pencils up into the ceiling and making fun of football kids who were failing class right to their face, and in front of numerous students, even projecting on the board most of the time.
    • After that first paragraph, I can see why you’re a TA and not a teacher. Have you made the move from South Knoxville to Bearden yet?    Maybe he left because he is an actual teacher and coach, and didn’t want to be associated with a group of foul mouthed middle school coaches who like to pretend they’re big time.
    • Yeah and the coach is gone. Whole bizarre situation here. We played them a couple of times at MTSU last few years. She was a player for sure.
